Benji wakes up with a start. He looks at the empty space in bed next to him. His heartbeat kicks up a notch until he sees Ethan at their closet across the room, an unmistakable shadow in the dark. Ethan crawls back into bed, one of his ridiculously expensive cashmere sweaters over his pajamas. “All right, love?” Benji murmurs.
“Just a little cold,” Ethan answers.
Benji frowns. It’s easily 25 degrees in their bedroom on this sultry May night. Summer’s come early to D.C. Benji himself is overly warm under the sheets and quilt his nan stitched with her own two hands eons ago. But he turns and reaches out, tucks Ethan’s spine into the curve of his chest, pulls the blankets over the both of them. He’s sweltering now, but he can feel Ethan finally relaxing into his embrace. “There. Sleep well, love.”
“I will now,” Ethan whispers.
Benji smiles and goes back to sleep.
