Work Text:
The doctor had just broken the news to you. Daisuke was alive. He was alive, laying in a coma after the surgery. He survived the crash and they managed to get him back.
But they couldn't get all of him back. He had lost his memories due to head trauma and the doctors couldn't yet tell how much he'd forgotten.
"Traumatic Amnesia," they said. The extent of the memory loss depends on the injury and might be temporary or permanent. The doctors said they would try their best to bring back his memories through therapy, but nothing was guaranteed.
So now you were sitting by his side. Like you have been for the past 3 hours, hoping and praying that he would open his eyes and be good as new.
And at some point he did.
As you were zoning out, thoughts spiraling in all different directions, the brunette next to you groaned, making you snap back to reality.
For a moment you didn't know what to say. Did his memories reach far enough to remember you? Were you now nothing but a stranger in the eyes of your lover?
Daisuke needed a moment to get himself together. His surroundings were too bright, too white. The last few... hours? Minutes? He couldn't tell. They felt like a fever dream. He could hear screams, machines and unfamiliar voices. His mind filled with blurry faces he couldn't quite pin point, like they were characters from his childhood he'd met once and then never saw again.
He turned his head left. He was in a hospital room, that was sure.
Confusion started filling his mind. The last thing he remembered was... the last week of school. Yeah. They were walking around the old hallways for the last time. Two friends by his side followed as they chatted. ...Yeah. Exactly. He remembered now. She was to his right.
He turned his head as he repayed the memories in his head.
"Daisuke?" Your soft voice clung out in the quiet room, making the boy snap his head towards you, which resulted in sharp pain and a groan.
He reached his hand up to hold his head, slowly looking over at you this time. Blush spread across his face. "Y/n? What-"
You let out a sigh of relief. He knew who you were. That was a good sign. "Yeah, it's me." You smiled, reaching over to hold his free hand. "Are you feeling okay? I should call the doctor and tell them you're awake-"
Before you could let go of his hand to go get a doctor, he tightened his grip around your fingers. "Wait-"
You turned your head. "Hm?"
Daisuke could feel his heart almost exploding out of his chest. Confusion was filling his head. Why were you here? Not that he was complaining, no, not at all. But he just couldn't comprehend the fact that you of all people sat by his side. Last time he spoke to you was for a project you had to do together for your final grade, during which he was nothing but a stuttering mess. After that the two of you would greet each other when passing by, which was already a win enough for him. There was nothing more between you. If there was, he was sure he wouldn't have forgotten it. Right? He was planning on asking you out during graduation. But that was still a few days away.
Wait- had he gotten into an accident before graduation? Did he miss it? If so, the question still stayed. Why were you of all people by his hospital bed?
"I-I'm not trying to sound rude or anything- but- uh- why are you here? No- better question- why am I here? What happened?" He glanced down at your interlinked hands, more blood rushing to his cheeks as he quickly let go. "Sorry-"
"Wait, how much do you remember?"
"I- uh- I remember being in school. Last week. Preparing for graduation."
Your eyes widened. Last week of school? That was four years ago! On top of that, you'd only started dating right before college, two months after graduation. So he knew who you were, but had no recollection of your relationship.
"Y/n?"
You blinked a few times, getting it together. "Oh god, alright, where do I start- uhhh-" a few seconds passed as you tried to collect your thoughts. "Right. Okay. First of all, we graduated about four years ago."
"What!?" He exclaimed, groaning as the sharp pain hit him again. "Four years ago?"
"Yeah. After high school you didn't end up going to college. Long story short, your mom found you an internship on a freighter spaceship. You were on it for a few months before it crashed. It took them almost a year to get you back."
Daisukes eyes widened. His head slowly dropped down as he looked at his hands, fidgeting with his fingers. No, he couldn't panic. Not in front of you. "Oh."
You nodded. "Yeah."
"I don't- I can't remember any of that. Did anybody else survive? How many of us were even on that ship?"
"There were five. Only you and the captain survived. But he's badly injured and can't speak."
"Oh."
You wanted to reach out and take his hand, but in his current confused state it didn't seem like a good idea. So, you stayed put.
"And... you? Why are you here and not- like- my parents." He asked, slowly looking back over at me.
You chuckled. "Your parents were here an hour ago. But they had to run some errands. And I'm here because I'm your girlfriend."
His eyes widened at your words, not believing what he was hearing for a moment. His... what? No way. He actually did it? He actually managed to ask you out an it worked? Heck yeah! Those news alone were enough to make him forget about the whole spaceship thing.
"Wait, we're like- together?"
You chuckled, nodding along to his words. "Yeah."
"No fucking way." He smirked, and as he turned his head again another groan left him. "Ugh... this pain is so annoying. Wait, you have to tell me how I managed that. How long have we been together for?"
"Our four year anniversary is in a few weeks." You smiled. "You asked me out during graduation. And since I had feelings for you I obviously said yes. The boyfriend girlfriend question was asked on the fourth date."
A proud smile appeared on his face. "Heck yeah."
You chuckled again. The part about him promising to marry you after getting back to earth was left out. "I'll tell you more after the doctor checks up on you, alright?"
Daisuke seemed to be lost in thought, still celebrating his victory. But as you stood up a thought entered his head. You said four years, right? He's been away for a bit over a year. And considering how most relationships work that means...
"No way..." He whispered to himself, smirking.
"Hm?"
He looked up at you- carefully this time- with an innocent smile. "Nothing."
You hesitated, raising your eyebrow. "Alright... I'll go get a doctor."
