“Cole’s out there on his own!”
Ashes rain down.
“You’re not my teacher Kai!”
Fire shoots into the sky. Kai looks at the sky and pants. How long has he been training?
It’s super dark here, wherever here is, so Kai just found a rock and started sparing with it. He isn’t 100% sure where Jay and Nya are, but he knows they can find him.
“Not my…Kai.”
“Not mine.” Kai mutters. “Not anymore.”
Kai feels tears start to form. He puts his hand in his face and sits on the floor, the rock at his back. “Goddamnit.”
Kai wouldn’t say that he had a fight with Cole, but he doesn’t know how Cole feels about him right now.
He probably hates you. He wishes that you didn’t like him anymore so that he can be happy with Geo. Geo is better than you.
“Fuck.” Kai lays his head on the back of the rock and sighs.
Kai doesn't hate Geo. How could he? Geo is wonderful. He’s a terrible baker, but he’s nice, thoughtful, strong, and honestly really pretty. It’s no wonder that Cole likes him so much. It’s no wonder that even after not seeing Cole for five years they still can’t act how they used to. God Kai would give anything just to hold his hand, to kiss his face, and just be able to be with him and feel the way they used to feel.
You’re being selfish.
Kai threads his hands through his hair. He takes out the bandana and his hair falls around him. He hasn’t gelled it in days, weeks even.
He looks at the bandana in his hands. It would be so easy to just burn it. It’d turn to ashes and fly away in the wind. It would be so easy. If he just burned his whole body and flew into the wind as ashes.
Kai only wants Cole to be happy. He wants Geo to be happy. He wants Nya, Lloyd, Wyldfyre, Zane, Jay, Sora, Arin, all of them. He just wants them to be happy.
Tears drop onto the bandana. Silent, pathetic tears.
“I just want to talk to you.” Kai mutters. “I just want you here with me. Please.”
Kai remembers all the amazing times he had with Cole. Laughing while playing video games in the monastery, sleeping together in Cole's big bed, sparing with each other, kissing on the couch.
Kai holds tight onto his shoulders, letting himself cry. Letting himself finally get a good fucking cry in. Too much has happened. Arin and Sora leaving, being in the Nether Realm, the terrifying Land of Monsters. Too much.
“Kai!”
Kai looks up and sees Nya standing a few feet away from him. She quickly comes and stands at his side.
“Kai I’ve been calling your name for like five minutes-” Nya stops speaking suddenly. “Are you crying?”
Kai lets himself fully sob, and he nods.
Nya’s face immediately turns to concern as she wraps her arms around Kai. Kai holds onto her while he cries into her shoulder. He feels like a child. Crying into Nya’s arms as she rubs his back. He feels stupid, but comfortable.
Kai calms down enough to talk, but he still holds onto Nya.
“I’m sorry.” He whispers pathetically. “I’m sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.”
“Why?” Nya asks.
“I don’t know.” Kai says. His first instinct was to apologize. “I just miss him.”
Nya pulls back a bit and she holds onto Kai’s face, pushing some of his hair back. “Who?” She asks, but Kai feels like she knows the answer.
“Cole.” Kai says, leaning into her cold hands. “I miss him so much. I miss what we had before the Merge. Before stupid amazing Geo existed." Kai glares at nothing in particular. “I can’t be mad, I just- I just want Cole to love me again.”
Kai holds onto Nya’s shoulders. He just wants to fall asleep in Cole’s arms, and wake up to his deep voice and soft kisses.
“Do you think he doesn’t?” Nya asks, rubbing her thumb across Kai’s cheek. Just the way she knows makes him feel better.
“I don’t know.” Kai admits. “You’ve seen the way he is with Geo. He looks at him the same way he used to look at me. And Geo has the same look back at him.”
“Well. I can’t speak for either Geo or Cole,” Nya lets go of Kai’s face and sits behind him. “But I think that Cole looks at you all the same as he used to.” Nya starts to thread her hands through Kai’s hair. “But I don’t know for sure. Neither of us do, or will until you talk to him. And I know we can’t exactly do that right now, but until you see him again I'll be with you. I always will be.” Nya kisses Kai's head.
Kai starts crying again because he knows it’s true. He knows that there's nothing he can do right now, and that all he needs to do is talk to Cole once he can. And he knows that Nya will be with him forever.
“Thank you.” Kai stands up and turns around, wiping his eyes. Nya looks back at him.
Nya. His sister. His wonderful sister who's been with him all his life.
Kai hugs her again. He knows that Nya doesn’t like hugs as much as he does, but she returns it. Kai rests his head on Nya’s head as she rests her face on his chest.
“I’m sorry.” Kai whispers.
“Why?” Nya asks again.
“I don’t know.”
They both laugh for a moment before pulling away from each other.
“Let's go find Jay.” Nya says, holding Kai’s hand.
Kai nods and they walk together.
“I love you Nya.” Kai says.
“I love you too.”
