Work Text:
It started with a late-night conversation on a sleepless night where Karlie and Taylor were watching a series and drinking hot chocolate, accompanied by Benjamin curled up at the end of the couch.
The children had gone to sleep long before, the house was silent except for the TV, and Taylor was almost falling asleep when Karlie spoke the words.
- I want to have another baby. - Taylor’s heart jumped in her chest and her blood froze in her body. The poor woman jumped from the couch, both from the scare and the words.
- What? - the blonde asked, a little incredulous.
- I want to have another baby. - Karlie sat on the couch and muted the TV. - You know, maybe a girl this time.
- You want to have another baby? But we already have two. - Taylor replied in pure confusion, that was not the ideal moment for such a conversation. Karlie laughed at the blonde.
- Yes, and I want to have a third. Maybe a little girl with curly blond hair this time. What do you think? Do you want to do this? - Karlie held the blonde’s hands, watching her startled expressions begin to return to normal.
Taylor remained silent for a few moments. She loved Karlie’s children and considered them her own, and being Mama Taylor was truly one of her greatest prides.
When she and Karlie started dating, the blonde’s introduction into the boys’ lives had been smooth, the model had no problem explaining it to her children. Eli was still very young to notice any big changes, and Levi, a little older, was enchanted by Taylor the moment he saw her.
Now, a few years later, that family they had built felt complete. But upon hearing Karlie’s desire, something stirred inside her. Taylor looked at their intertwined hands, at the soft glow in Karlie’s eyes, and realized her wife was serious.
- I don’t know… - Taylor murmured, squeezing Karlie’s fingers lightly. - Having a baby… It’s a lot, it’s starting everything all over again. And I… I’m afraid I won’t be able to handle it.
Karlie leaned closer, resting her forehead against hers.
- Tay, you always handle it. You’re the best mama those boys could ever have. And I know that if we have another, it’s going to be amazing. I feel in my heart that you’d be amazing, and I’ve done this before, we’d be together, and I’d never leave your side.
Taylor sighed, torn and emotional. She knew that tone in Karlie’s voice, that soft firmness that mixed dream and certainty.
- If we do this… I can’t guarantee I won’t be scared. I never thought I’d really have a family until you came back to me and I entered the boys’ lives. I love them as if they were my own, I’m afraid they might not feel enough for me.
- They are yours, Tay. You’re Levi’s favorite, and Elijah is blond just like you, no one would doubt he came from your belly. - Karlie said playfully, and Taylor widened her eyes.
- Oh my God, you don’t want me to get pregnant, do you? Because I don’t know if I’m ready to have a baby walking around inside me, Karlie.
The model laughed for a long time, making Taylor soften her expression.
- Babies don’t walk around inside their mothers’ bellies, Tay. And no, you don’t need to carry the baby if we do this. I’ve done it twice, the third will be easy. - Karlie winked at the blonde.
Taylor closed her eyes for a moment, took a deep breath, and thought of every moment that had led her to that couch, sitting with Karlie. Through so many fights and reconciliations, tears, melancholic albums screaming longing, angry-toned messages and phone calls ending in tears, until the first “I love you” finally spoken after years, when neither believed it would be possible to live it again.
The blonde opened her eyes and looked at Karlie, who smiled sideways with shining eyes, and thought there was nothing in the world that this woman asked for that she could ever say no to.
- Okay. - Taylor said.
- Okay? - Karlie asked. - Like, okay, let’s do this?
- Okay like, let’s keep talking about this, okay like “this is something I still need to process inside me, but it’s not a no.” - Taylor continued. - Is that enough for you?
Karlie let out a happy laugh, hugging her tightly, almost spilling the hot chocolate from the blonde’s lap.
- That’s more than enough for me, Taylor. You’re enough for me. Thank you for considering this and I’ll wait as long as you need. This, us, is all I ever wanted, and even if you end up changing your mind, that’s okay, because I love you and I love our chaotic family. - Karlie squeezed Taylor’s hand three times. Just like when they were still 25.
- I don’t think I’ll change my mind, but you caught me by surprise, I could have had a heart attack. - Taylor said, placing a hand on her chest.
- You’re so dramatic, has anyone ever told you that? — Karlie teased. - But I’m sorry for blurting it out like that, I think I was just thinking a lot about it and it slipped out.
- It’s okay, your inability to keep many things to yourself is one of the reasons I love you so much. And probably one of the reasons for Tree’s almost heart attacks. - Taylor paused for a moment. - Oh my God. Tree is going to freak out, isn’t she? And my mom? She’s going to show up at our door with 20 knitted baby outfits before we even know the baby’s gender.
Taylor started rambling about how both families would react, and Karlie just watched the blonde already beginning to turn that idea into something possible for the two of them.
---
The following weeks were filled with conversations, research, and plans. The idea that once seemed like just a midnight impulse turned into something real.
- Have you thought about names? - Taylor asked on a lazy morning while making coffee in the kitchen for the two of them. The boys were at their dad’s for the weekend, so the two were free of sticky hands and dinosaurs spread all over the counter.
Karlie walked in barefoot, her hair messy and wearing one of her wife’s oversized shirts.
- I have. But we still have plenty of time before we get to the naming part, love.
- I know, but the name is also really important, Karlie. I want our child to have the most beautiful name on the school’s attendance list. - Karlie looked at her for a moment and laughed.
- Don’t laugh at me. - Taylor pouted, and Karlie came closer, hugging her from behind.
- Only you, Taylor Alison, would think about a name being the most beautiful on the school roll call list. Which one did you think of?
- Okay, I’m still unsure, but maybe Hannah.
- And if it’s a boy?
- It won’t be a boy, Karlie.
- How can you be so sure?
- Because I know we’ll have a mini Karlie who will be super smart, funny, and sweet, just like you. The boy quota is already full, Eli and Levi already came with all the boy qualities there could be. - Karlie laughed and turned the blonde to face her.
- Are we really going to do this? - the model asked.
- Yes, we’re going to have a baby. A girl, and she’ll be so loved by both of us, and the boys will teach her everything about trucks and dinosaurs, and the first word she says will be “Tyrannosaurus Rex.”
Karlie laughed and rested her forehead against Taylor’s.
- So you’ve already thought of everything, huh? — Karlie asked, still smiling, pulling back slightly to look at her.
- Well, not everything… — the blonde looked away. — There’s still the chance it could be a boy and I don’t have any boy names in mind. - They both laughed and Karlie gave Taylor a quick kiss.
- You’re wonderful, you know that? And I love you. And I’m so happy you want this as much as I do.
- I want everything with you, Karlie. I always have.
---
The fertilization process was not simple. There were appointments, exams, and waits that felt eternal. But amid the anxieties, the two created their own rituals.
In the clinic room, waiting for the fertilization moment, Taylor held Karlie’s hand tightly.
- I’ve never seen you this nervous, Kar.
- Because it’s important. - Karlie murmured, squeezing her wife’s fingers even harder. - It’s our future.
Taylor chuckled softly.
- I think it’s cute that you still say “important” the same way you did when you were young. - Taylor said with a teasing smile at the corner of her lips, trying to calm her own nerves.
- Take that back right now, Taylor Alison Swift. I’m still in my prime. - Karlie pretended indignation for a moment, but soon leaned her head on the blonde’s shoulder.
In that moment, Taylor felt a wave of tenderness so strong she nearly cried.
- Hey. It’s going to be okay. And if it doesn’t work the first time, we’ll try again. I’m not going anywhere. - Karlie said, kissing her wife’s temple.
___
The days that followed were the longest. Karlie wrote everything down: schedules, symptoms, the tiniest signs that could mean something. Taylor tried to balance her anxiety with humor, but deep down, she was just as nervous as her wife.
- You’ve already taken like two tests today, Karlie. - Taylor said, walking into the bathroom and seeing another wrapper in the trash.
- Three. - Karlie corrected, biting her lip.
Taylor shook her head, smiling. - You’ve done this before, waiting to see if you were pregnant or not. Why is it different this time? Why are you so nervous?
Karlie thought for a moment before answering.
- Because this time I’m trying to get pregnant with the woman I’ve loved since I was a teenager. Because I never imagined we’d be here one day, with you.
That night, they lay in each other’s arms, the boys already asleep. The silence was filled with whispers.
- And what if it doesn’t work? - Karlie asked, insecure.
- Then we’ll keep trying. - Taylor replied without hesitation. — What matters is that we’re together, and I’ll be by your side the whole way.
Karlie smiled faintly, stroking her wife’s hair.
- I don’t know what I’d do without you.
- Lucky for you, you’ll never have to find out. - Taylor whispered, kissing her before falling asleep.
---
On the day of the official consultation to know the result, the nervousness was written in every gesture. Taylor trembled more than Karlie, though she tried to hide it.
The doctor entered with a professional but warm smile.
- Well, I have news for you. The test came back positive.
For an instant, the world stopped. Karlie put her hands to her face, her eyes filling with tears. Taylor let out a nervous laugh, covering her mouth with her hand.
- Positive? - the blonde repeated, as if she needed to confirm it.
- Positive. - the doctor confirmed.
The two hugged, crying and laughing at the same time. Taylor kissed Karlie’s cheek repeatedly, saying:
- We did it, Kar. We did it.
---
Telling the boys was another special chapter. They gathered everyone in the living room, Benjamin on Taylor’s lap, Eli and Levi on the couch, already suspicious of the mysterious atmosphere, Meredith and Olivia sleeping somewhere in the house.
- So… - Karlie began, exchanging knowing glances with Taylor. - We have news for you.
- Are we getting another cat? - Levi asked curiously.
- No. - Taylor smiled. - But the family is going to grow.
- Then a dog? - Eli frowned.
Karlie took a deep breath, emotional.
- You’re going to have a little brother or sister.
For a few seconds, the two were silent, processing the information. Then Levi broke into a huge grin.
- Really? I’m going to be a big brother again?
- That’s right, tiger. - Taylor confirmed.
Eli jumped into Karlie’s lap.
- I want it to be a girl!
Laughter filled the room. Levi went on and on about being a big brother again, and Eli kept talking about all the things he would teach the baby.
Taylor looked at Karlie in that moment and needed no words. In her wife’s eyes was all the certainty she needed: they had made the right choice.
---
The family was, in fact, growing. And the love, already immense, seemed to have no limits.
The first weeks were a mix of intense emotions. Karlie, still dazed by happiness, also faced the symptoms that came with pregnancy.
Taylor made a point of being there for every detail. From morning sickness to unexpected cravings, the blonde never left her side, ready to hold Karlie’s hair back in the bathroom or cross the city in search of blueberry pancakes at ten at night.
- I swear I won’t laugh if you tell me what you’re craving right now. - Taylor said once, already in pajamas, lying in bed.
Karlie looked at her with a guilty expression.
- Peanut butter and fries.
Taylor blinked slowly, processing. - Together?
- Together. - Karlie confirmed, serious.
The blonde let out a resigned sigh, getting up.
- Okay. Peanut butter with fries… That’s actually not the weirdest thing you’ve craved.
Karlie laughed, pulling her back for a quick kiss.
- I love you, Tay.
- I love you too. Even when you commit culinary crimes.
---
The boys were also excited about the news, each in their own way.
Levi was protective, asking if he could teach the baby to paint, ride a bike, and show his dinosaur collection. Eli was pure curiosity. He’d touch Karlie’s belly whenever he could, as if expecting to feel the baby move at any moment.
- Is the baby awake yet? — he asked almost every morning when Karlie came to wake him up.
— Still tiny, my love. - Karlie explained, kissing her son’s forehead. — But soon he or she will start moving.
- I think it’s a girl. - Eli said with all the certainty in the world.
Taylor and Karlie exchanged amused glances.
- And why do you think that? - Taylor asked.
- Because I want a little sister. - he answered simply, as if it were obvious.
---
Weeks passed, and Karlie’s belly began to grow, slowly becoming visible. Taylor loved that process.
Sometimes, when Karlie was already asleep, Taylor would lean down to rest her head on her belly, listening in silence, as if she could catch something beyond the sound of her own heart.
- Do you want to talk to her already? - Karlie asked one morning.
The blonde lifted her face, a little embarrassed.
- Maybe just a little.
- And what do you want to say? - Karlie teased.
- I want to tell her that she’s already very loved. That Mama Tay will always be here.
Karlie was quiet for a moment, emotional, then pulled the blonde in for a long kiss.
- You’re going to be the best mom in the world for her.
Months went by in that mix of anxiety and happiness. Taylor worked hard to create beautiful memories: she organized a family dinner just to celebrate the fourth month of pregnancy, filled the house with flowers for Karlie on a random morning, and even started a photo album dedicated just to the pregnancy.
Karlie, in turn, said the best part of it all was feeling loved in every detail.
- You turn even hard days into good ones, Tay. - she said one night, as they cuddled on the couch and Taylor showed her the album she was making.
- That’s because you make it all worthwhile. - Taylor replied, softly kissing her belly.
---
The big day came: the gender reveal party, organized by Karlie’s sisters.
The late afternoon sun lit up the backyard of the Kloss home in Missouri. Karlie’s sisters, always lively and creative, had planned everything in secret, transforming the space into a delicate and love-filled celebration scene.
Tables covered with white cloths were decorated with daisies, and pastel balloons floated in the air, setting the mood of the party.
Taylor and Karlie arrived hand in hand, accompanied by Levi and Eli, who ran around everywhere, excited about the decorations.
- Wow! - Levi exclaimed, eyes wide. - Did you see all the balloons?
- Mamas, can I pop them? - Eli asked, already stretching out his little hand to grab one.
- Hey, no mischief yet. - Taylor laughed, holding the little one’s arm. - Save the energy for the big moment.
Karlie watched it all with her heart tight with emotion. Seeing her sisters so dedicated, the families gathered, the boys smiling… it all felt bigger than she had dreamed.
One of the sisters, Kimby, came over excitedly.
- So, are you excited?
- Very. Thank you for this, Kimby, it’s all so beautiful. — Taylor said, smiling at her sister-in-law.
- Yes, it’s perfect. - Karlie added. - And the most impressive thing is that you didn’t let the gender slip even once, amazing. - she teased her sister.
- I’m not going to answer you because you’re carrying my future niece or nephew, and I’m too happy to care about you being annoying! - Karlie’s sister teased back.
Taylor watched the two interact from a distance, smiling, until her mother came closer.
- You look beautiful, sweetheart. Are you anxious? - Andrea ran her hand through her daughter’s hair.
- More than ever. Can you believe it? - the blonde asked, half laughing, half hiding her emotions.
- Yes, I can. You’ve always loved Karlie, even when you denied it to yourself. I’m just happy you two found each other again and are building all this together. - Taylor’s mom wiped a tear from her daughter’s eyes.
- Are we already crying? I haven’t even given my speech yet. - they heard Austin arrive. Taylor rolled her eyes playfully.
- Austin, you are absolutely not giving a speech today.
- Of course I am! I’m going to be an uncle.
- No, you’re not, and you’re already an uncle.
- I know, but this time I’m at the party. Mom, don’t you think I should give a speech? - Taylor’s brother turned to their mom.
Before Andrea could say anything, Karlie intervened.
- No speeches today, please! I’m emotional enough already, I don’t want to leave here crying my eyes out, we have photos to take and save in our pregnancy book. — Karlie slipped an arm around Taylor’s waist and kissed her temple. Then she went off to check on the kids, while hearing Taylor’s little cheer and Austin’s groan.
---
The moment of the reveal finally arrived. Everyone gathered in the garden, where a big balloon was tied to a flower-decorated structure. Inside, colorful confetti would reveal the long-awaited answer.
Karlie held Taylor’s hand tightly, her eyes brimming with tears. Levi and Eli stood right in front, ready to pop the balloon with their moms.
- Are you ready? - Kristine asked, holding a golden pin.
- I don’t think we’ll ever be completely ready. - Taylor laughed nervously.
Karlie took a deep breath, looking at her wife. - Together?
- Always. - Taylor replied firmly.
The two placed their hands over the boys’, holding the pin. A second of absolute silence hung in the air, until everyone counted:
- Three, two, one… go!
The balloon burst with a loud *pop*, scattering a shower of pink confetti into the air. The backyard filled with screams, applause, and laughter.
Eli jumped up and down, arms raised.
- I knew it! I knew it was a girl!
Levi hugged Taylor around the waist, smiling.
Karlie covered her face with her hands, tears streaming uncontrollably. Taylor hugged her tight, her own face wet.
- Our girl… it’s real, Kar.
- Our Hannah.
The sisters came closer, surrounding them in warm hugs. — Congratulations! — they repeated, emotional.
---
After the reveal, the atmosphere was pure celebration. The children ran through the yard with handfuls of confetti, while the adults toasted with sparkling juice.
Taylor crouched down to talk to Levi and Eli.
- You know you’re going to have responsibilities, right?
- I’ll take care of her. - Levi answered seriously.
- And I’ll play dolls with her. - Eli added.
- Dolls, soccer, music… she’ll get to play whatever she wants. - Karlie interrupted, smiling.
- Yeah. - Eli agreed thoughtfully. - But I think she’ll like music more, like Mama Tay.
Taylor smiled, emotional.
- If she wants, I’ll teach her everything I know.
Karlie came closer and slipped an arm around her wife’s waist.
- She’s already going to be born surrounded by love.
---
In the late afternoon, as the guests began to say goodbye, the yard was still full of pink confetti scattered across the ground. Karlie, tired but radiant, sat with Taylor on the garden swing, while Levi and Eli played nearby.
- I never thought I’d feel like this. - Karlie said, resting her head on the blonde’s shoulder. - Complete in a new way.
Taylor kissed her forehead, caressing her already rounded belly.
- Me neither. It feels like each piece of confetti is a little piece of love we got today.
Karlie smiled, closing her eyes.
- Our girl is going to be the most loved child in the world.
- She will. - Taylor confirmed, looking at the sky now tinged pink with the sunset.
And there, among the distant laughter of the children and the gentle sway of the swing, they knew this was just the beginning of a new and wonderful chapter.
