Work Text:

Sofia. Then Sofia the Death Witch. Now Sofia the First. Just a cookie who was destined to guard life itself. Her amulet of which she always wore since the incident contained the souls of the freed. Though one soul was particularly memorable.

Not too long ago a young soccerer was tending to his sick older sister Cordelia. Recently she had caught a rather bad fever that was feared from those around Enchancia. When a cookie caught it they spoke of longing to be one with life itself and ran away to the mountains. Cedric Cookie was determined to keep his sister.

His father, the royal soccerer was always too busy to help with Cordelia Cookies sickness. His mother was always too busy drifting off to tend to her daughter. Cedric Cookie needed her here. Ever since that fateful day their relationship grew strained and Cedric refused to let his sister die without knowing her brother meant none of what happened.

“I’m going to get you some bear jellies in the morning. Sleep well sis.” Cedric Cookie said leaving the room.

“Cedric.”Cordelia cookie started. Cedric cracked the door open.

“Yes?”

“I want to go out there.”

Cedric’s stomach churned, knowing the fate that meant.

“Cordelia Cookie, swear to witches that you won’t leave.” Cedric pleaded.

“I…I swear to witches.” Cordelia sighed, closing her eyes.

“Good-Goodnight Cordelia.” Cedric left to sleep.

The next morning Cedric headed straight to Cordelia Cookies room. He stopped noticing the empty room. She left. Cedric Cookie burst towards the door grabbing his purple coat and black boots. The weather was getting colder. He needed to hurry.

The wind picked up and houses lights were still turned off in the early morning. Merlin’s jellies, he thought to himself, the teen running faster then he thought a cookie like him could. Wind hit his face as his fear grew heavy. The cold weather made his coat seem like nothing more than bed clothes.

It seemed hours had passed by his lips turning blue. Soon he spotted Cordelia Cookie reaching the mountain's peak. “Delia!” Cedric called over the winds. Almost there, he thought, pushing through the numbness in his dough. A small figure, maybe that of a child was now visible. A hand extended.

Finally Cedric was at the top. It seemed the two walked into a castle of some sort. Carefully but not slowly he walked into the castle. “Delia!” He called.
His sister turned around.

“Cedric! I’m so sorry I didn’t say goodbye. I wondered if you would truly care.” Cordelia Cookie said turning to Cedric as they both were freezing. He turned to the figure he saw earlier.

Now without as much wind he could see her clearly, a child who couldn’t be older then the age of 8-9 stood there grimly. A small hand clutched around an amulet of the fabled legends of the Death Witch. How could such a monster look so innocent?

“What did you do to my sister?!” Cedric shouted desperately to the girl.

“I have done nothing, for it was merely her time to become free and one with the rhythm of life.” The Death Witch said.

“Let her go!” Cedric exclaimed.

“I can’t, but there’s a flower up a bit farther that can help her stay a little longer.” The Death Witch continued.” Though by heading for it you may miss your chance to say goodbye.”

“I have to try!” Cedric yelled. “Cordelia please hold on a little longer! I have to tell you what happened that day!” Cordelia Cookie coughed and turned towards Cedric, smiling faintly.

Cordelia watched Cedric exit. She wondered why he wouldn’t just admit what had happened instead of being cowardly in her so-called final moments. She looked to the “Death Witch” sitting down straightening her dusty gown.

“What is your name?” Cordelia asked. No way could the person set to help her be one with life have the name Death Witch.

“Sofia.” Sofia said quietly. Suddenly her necklace glowed.

“Has that pretty necklace ever lit up before?” Cordelia asked, the cold piercing her lips.

“Not this bright. Let’s just hope your brother gets back soon.” Sofia sighed.

————————————————-

Cordelia headed outside where she saw her brother holding a flower. Her “life” was draining fast. Cedric ran up to her and held her tight as he lowered her to the ground.

“Cordy…” Cedric said. He hadn’t said that name in awhile. Almost as if the nickname made her see, see what happened, gain insight on the past. The flower had probably done it if Cedric guessed. Cordelia Cookie looked up and Cedric Cookie.

“Oh Cedy… it was never your fault. I see it now. Don’t let your icing and dough be tainted with regrets that shouldn’t be there. Don’t blame Sofia for my joining of life. I’m so glad to have called you my brother.” Cordelia said.

“I’m glad I got to have you as a sister. Please. Please don’t go.” Cedric cried.

“I must. For it calls me. Goodbye Cedric.” Cordelia said before her body disappeared into the cold air.

“No! No! Please! Why?” Cedric called out.

Looking up he saw her in the clouds, he reached for her but she floated to the Death Witch and hugged her. Before floating into the amulet and disappearing once more.

Why did this have to happen to her? Who was the Sofia she spoke of? Did she truly believe him or was she lying so he wouldn’t live in agony? He would get that amulet and bring her back, he had to. He got up and started walking home.

He couldn’t go after that cookie just yet. The cold had rendered him useless and pathetic. So pathetic he couldn’t even beat the small child. He almost passed an old building if it weren’t for the call.

“Cedric. Cedric the Great.” A voice called.

“Cordy?” Cedric asked the air.

“Turn around towards the glass.” A voice said. Turning around he saw a cookie in the glass. The cookie had horns and a black cloak, white hair strewn across his face. “Call me Dark Enchanter Cookie, more formally as Dark Fiddleford Cookie.”

“What do you want?” Cedric asked, scared.

“I can help you get your sister back, just meet me and some other cookies at the nearby forest.” Dark Enchanter Cookie said. He then went away.

An offer he couldn’t pass. He was going to that forest.
