Padmé at first resented being forced to go on vacation to this seaside town, packed full of tourists buying the experience on credit. Her family meant well, but Padmé knew that they didn’t take her ambitions for elected office seriously. Women might be able to vote, now, but being a legislator… that was still too far for many people.
But Padmé was stubborn, and she wanted nothing more than to get back out there and keep campaigning, keep working to gain any support she could claw from the equally stubborn masses. Being forced to take a break was almost more frustrating than the slow progress. Even though Sabé had assured her they’d keep working to drum up support in her absence, Padmé worried about how vacationing would affect her image, so precarious as any unmarried woman’s was.
But despite herself, the vacation did bring Padmé an unexpected balm.
Anakin was intense, earnest to a fault, and both younger and well below her station.
And he did not mock or smile indulgently at her political ambitions.
“If it were up to me,” he said, “you would rule the world.”
And Padmé laughed more freely than she had in a long time.
