distance makes the heart grow fonder (or something like that)

Summary:

The bartender makes an observation about the party in Survive.

Notes:

Just something short and super-sweet I scribbled up this morning!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It's when Adachi leans in close to crack a joke that Kashiwagi really notices it.

Adachi is leaning on the bar with one elbow, twisted a little awkwardly with the rest of his body facing the other way, so that his leg brushes against Nanba’s. His hand rests on Nanba’s knee, fingers drumming idly against it.

Meanwhile, Ichiban is standing behind Nanba, so he can drape himself over Nanba’s shoulders in a loose but all-encompassing embrace. His cheek is squished against the top of Nanba’s head.

Despite the odd positioning, the three of them look as content as can be. It's not strange to see their group so close — they often sit in front of the piano just to squeeze together on the bench, even leaving their drinks behind on the counter since Kashiwagi expressed some concern about spills near the instrument.

On the other side of the room, near the front, it's more of the same.

Zhao is sitting across from Joon-gi, engaged in a fairly one-sided game of footsies, but Joon-gi doesn’t seem to mind much when Zhao loops an ankle around his and tangles their legs together. Behind him, Seonhee occasionally leans her head back against Joon-gi, and he reaches over his shoulder to card his fingers through her long hair. Her and Saeko’s hands rest together on the tabletop, and she gently massages circles into Saeko’s palms.

Somehow, the entire party has managed to cuddle up together, despite there only being single seats in Survive.

“Do I need to change my seating arrangements? Because clearly, you all would be much more comfortable sitting together,” Kashiwagi pointedly announces to the group.

A few laughs bubble up around the room as they share glances.

“I think you should get a table with one big booth all around it!” Ichiban suggests cheerily.

Adachi shrugs. “Eh, I like things this way. Distance makes the heart grow closer or whatever, right?”

“Something like that.” Kashiwagi lets out a soft sound between a sigh and a chuckle as he shakes his head. “I suppose you're right, though.”

Looking out at his regulars, he realizes that it's been a long, long time since he's felt so close with anyone, despite the bar between them.

Notes:

I have a confession to make... I thought the seats by the front windows were booths at first, only to realize they were single seats, but I sometimes write them as booths just so the party has a place to snuggle downstairs... And even though I wrote this to correct that, I'm still going to keep doing it >:-)
