The battle for the soul of the Force has only just begun…

Chapter 1: Shadows in the Force

Chapter Text

The air on Ossus was thick with mist, the ruins of the ancient Jedi sanctuary barely visible through the drifting fog. Finn moved carefully among the crumbling pillars, lightsaber ignited, its blue blade humming softly. Every step felt heavier than the last, as if the stones beneath him remembered every Jedi who had fallen here.

Luke watched from the edge of a broken platform, his hooded eyes fixed on Finn. “Focus on the Force,” he said quietly, voice echoing over the wind. “Do not fight it. Let it guide you.”

Finn closed his eyes, letting the currents of the Force flow through him. The pull was subtle at first, a whisper against his thoughts. Then it grew, tugging at his limbs, his heart, his very mind. He lifted his saber in a sweeping arc, imagining it striking through shadows instead of stones.

But the shadows were never far away.

In his mind, Rey’s face appeared—half-lit, her eyes dark and unreadable. She reached for him, but her hand dissolved into smoke before he could touch it. Finn’s chest tightened.

“She is close,” Luke murmured, as if reading Finn’s thoughts. “Closer than you know. But the dark side is also near. You must learn to see it without fear, or it will consume you before you understand its shape.”

The training grounds trembled faintly beneath them, and Finn’s eyes snapped open. He sensed it—far away, a presence that made the hairs on his neck rise. Kylo Ren. And behind him, the commanding, cruel aura of Snoke. The dark side had not been idle.

Finn swallowed, gripping his saber tighter. “He’s… moving,” he said.

Luke’s gaze hardened. “Good. That means we are needed. The dark does not wait, and neither can we. Today, you fight not only with your blade but with your heart. Remember that.”

A sudden roar echoed from the cliffs, and Chewbacca appeared, bowcaster ready. “Rrrrgh!” he growled, confirming Luke’s warning.

Finn nodded. “I understand.”

Later, as Finn paused to catch his breath, Poe appeared, striding through the fog with an easy confidence that didn’t quite reach his tired eyes.

“Thought I’d find you here,” Poe said, leaning on a pillar. “Training like a Jedi, huh? Fancy.”

Finn gave a small, tired smile. “It’s harder than I thought. Every movement feels… wrong.”

Poe chuckled. “Yeah, I know that look. You get the blaster-fingers shakes first, then the existential dread. But hey, nobody said saving the galaxy would be easy.”

Finn laughed, low and brief, grateful for the levity. “Thanks for not laughing at me.”

“Hey, I’d never,” Poe said, smirking. “Though I might if you start talking to yourself in Jedi riddles.”

They walked together among the ruins, Finn explaining the visions he’d felt in the Force, the shadows that seemed to move of their own accord. Poe listened intently, nodding at all the right moments, but Finn could see his worry.

“You’re doing fine,” Poe said finally. “The Force isn’t something you get overnight. You’ve got it, Finn—you just have to let it grow. And… if anyone can bring Rey back from… whatever that thing Kylo’s got her caught in, it’s you.”

Finn felt a pang of uncertainty but also a spark of determination. Poe had a way of seeing what he couldn’t always see in himself.

The mist thickened as night fell, and Finn felt the Force shift under his feet, subtle yet unmistakable. Luke’s voice came to him, calm and steady. “The Jedi who have gone before us… their spirits remain. You may see them soon, if you are ready. They will guide you, but they will not fight for you. That is your choice.”

Finn’s stomach tightened at the thought. Ghosts of the Jedi? Ancient masters who had fallen in battles long forgotten? The idea was both terrifying and strangely comforting.

Poe nudged him lightly. “Don’t worry, buddy. When ghosts show up, you just act polite and nod. Easy as pie.”

Finn smiled, appreciating the humor even as the weight of responsibility pressed down. “Right. Polite and nod.”

Above them, the ruins whispered in the wind, shadows stretching like long fingers over broken stones. Finn felt the Force pulse around him—alive, patient, and watchful. Somewhere far away, Rey’s struggle continued, Kylo Ren’s shadow loomed, and Snoke’s presence seeped through the dark currents of the galaxy.

Finn tightened his grip on his saber and stepped into the fog, letting the Force guide him. The first lesson of the day was clear: the path of a Jedi was never just about skill. It was about courage, restraint, and the strength to face what lurked in the shadows—and what lurked within oneself.

The mist swallowed him, and the hum of his blade became the only light against the coming darkness.

And somewhere deep in the Force, the faintest whispers of the Jedi past stirred, waiting for the moment to speak.
