Chapter Text
The dim light barely touched them, yet the tension between Izumi and Evelyn burned hotter than the fires outside.
They stood only a few feet apart, but it felt like a chasm, two beautiful, broken people glaring at each other, both desperate to win and terrified of being truly seen.
Evelyn’s voice was soft, almost mocking, as he broke the silence.
"You’ve been looking at me like I’m dirt since the day we met," he said, his turquoise eyes glittering. "Is that your whole personality, Zumi? Glare at the prettier person and hope no one notices you’re just… mediocre?"
Izumi didn't flinch
"Prettier?" She let out a cruel laugh. "You mean fake. Manufactured. Evelyn Darling, the human showroom dummy. You’ve spent your whole life being worshipped, and yet you’re still this empty? God, it’s pathetic."
His smile faltered, but only for a moment.
"Pathetic?" he repeated, voice dripping poison. "At least people see me. You? You could walk into a room screaming, and no one would even notice. You’ve been invisible your entire life, Zumi. No wonder you chase after your daddy’s dream, you don’t have anything of your own."
Izumi’s breath caught, but rage burned through the hurt.
"At least my father loved me," she spat, eyes narrowing. "At least I know what it’s like to be loved without conditions. Can you say the same, Evelyn? Or is that why you chase strangers’ approval like a stray dog, begging for scraps?"
Evelyn’s hands curled into fists. His perfect mask cracked.
"You think you know me?" His voice rose, trembling with fury. "You think you understand what it’s like to be perfect, so perfect that people stop seeing you as a person at all?!" His voice broke. "I’m a dream they consume and discard. I’ve never belonged to myself, Zumi. Not once. But hey, at least people notice me. You? You could disappear tomorrow, and the world wouldn’t even blink."
That hit like a blade. Izumi’s lips trembled, but she bared her teeth in a feral smile.
"Funny you say that, coming from someone who doesn’t even know who they are without applause," she hissed. "You’re terrified of silence, aren’t you? Because silence means no one’s watching. No one’s clapping. No one cares. And if no one cares, Evelyn Darling ceases to exist."
Evelyn froze, his breathing sharp and ragged.
Izumi stepped closer, twisting the knife.
"You’re nothing but a hollow puppet dancing on invisible strings. Strip away the adoration, the fame, the perfect little face, and what’s left?" Her voice dropped to a whisper, vicious and cold.
"A scared, lonely boy who’d rather die than be ordinary."
Evelyn staggered back, eyes wide, but his fury surged back like wildfire.
"You want to talk about scared?" His voice was raw, shaking."You’re the most cowardly person I’ve ever met. You don’t love what you do. You don’t even like it. You just wear your father’s dream like a costume because facing your own emptiness would kill you. You’re not honoring him, you’re erasing him. Pretending his death meant something when really, it was just another excuse for you to stay small."
Izumi’s face crumpled, pain flashing across her features.
"You." Her voice cracked, but she forced it steady. "You don’t get to talk about him."
Evelyn’s smile turned sharp, almost cruel.
"Oh, but I do," he said softly. "Because it’s obvious. You built your entire identity around a dead man who isn’t even here to see it. You’re not living for him, Zumi. You’re hiding behind him. You’re so terrified of being forgotten that you turned his memory into a shield, and it’s still not enough."
Tears welled in Izumi’s eyes, but rage swallowed them whole.
" You bastard," she whispered, trembling. "At least I had someone to lose. At least I know what it feels like to love so much it hurts. You wouldn’t understand that, you’ve never been loved, only used."
That shattered something in him.
