Chapter 1: The flame flickering to life

Chapter Text

Hi so this is my first Uhm ao3 book so if it’s shitty I’m sorry

The heavy rain belted on the plastic roof of the small playground. Maeve sat on the cold metal, shivering from the low temperature. November in Puerto Rico was icy cold, and unfortunately Maeve’s drunk mother decided her daughter was a waste of food and space. Forty-five minutes earlier, Maeve was happily eating Paella, a Spanish dish her mother loved to cook. Unfortunately, maeve was mid bite when her front teeth bit deep into her tongue. A small cut opened and blood spilled out her mouth. Maeve immediately began to cry, blood and tears dripping down onto her shirt.

Her mother screamed, alcohol dripping from her breath as she called maeve all sorts of foul names like ‘Worthless’ ‘Idiotic’ ‘Selfish’ and ‘a piece of shit mistake’. Maeve suddenly heard the sound of a belt being unbuckled and saw her mother starting to stand. Maeve instantly got up and bolted to the door, running out without looking back. She didn’t look left or right before crossing the road, almost getting hit by a car. She rushed to her favourite playground, which was a ten minutes walk. She made it in seven minutes. There, she huddled into the small cubby house, barely able to get any warmth. Thunder rumbled and her sensitive ears rung. She whimpered and cried, blood now dried up on her chin and neck.

She was tired, alone and cold, goosebumps prickling her tan skin as she as trembled. Other children would be eating dinner or tucked into a warm bed by now, but Maeve was used to running out her house when her mother grabbed out the ‘bad juice’, aka wine or any sort of alcoholic beverage. For a moment longer, Maeve stayed hidden in the cubby. But when Maeve looked back up, she saw the small door of the cubby house slowly open and a girl stepped into the cubby. She looked around eight, the same age as Maeve. She sat next to maeve and wrapped the hoodie that was around her around Maeve’s body. Warmth engulfed her body and she couldn’t help but lean the girl. Even if the new girl looks grumpy, she seemed so..sweet.

“…who are you?” Maeve kindly asked the new girl. She had never seen her before. Not in school nor anywhere else.

“My name is Kenza. Yours?” Kenza asked, still huddled next to maeve.

“M-Maeve..” She shivered, a gush of cold air hitting them both. Maeve suddenly found herself leaning her head on Kenza’s shoulder, desperate for any sort of warmth. She expected to be shoved off or just told to get off, but Kenza huffed and leaned her head on Maeve’s.

“Why are you out here, at 8:39pm during the month of November?” Kenza asked, watching the droplets of water drip from the sky.

“My mom is drinking her bad juice again, it makes her angry and scream at me..” Maeve admitted, fiddling with her thumbs. She felt like crying at the sheer amount of times she’s had to run to the cubby and sleep in there until the next day or until police send her back home. Nothing was ever done about her mother being abusive, since her mother was a top donor in literally everything. Schools, hospitals, charities.

“Stay with me tonight, I have a rain proof tree house we can stay in?” Kenza suggested. The idea made Maeve perk with joy.

“Really?! You’d let me?”

“Of course. You need a better place then here..”

So that’s How maeve met Kenza, friends since grade 3. Inseparable is an understatement. Whenever she got the chance, maeve would sleep at kenza’s treehouse to the point she basically lived there.

Hi again. This is probably a really rushed start, but Uhm..yeah. Hi. No I mean bye. Bye bye guys!
