“Luz! You…I could have lost you…I…” Amity shouted, holding back tears. It felt like reliving hell when Luz almost…You know…
“Mi amor, I’m sorry I-“ Luz couldn’t get a word in.
“Please, Luz. You don’t understand it.” Amity said, turning away from the girl. Luz walked up to Amity, putting her arms around the witch gently and holding her hands.
“Help me?” Luz asked gently. Amity sighed as she walks over to a tree and leans up against it, sliding down to sit in it. Luz joins her, sitting crisscross next to her.
“This is gonna be a long story, so just…be prepared.” Amity said. Luz nodded wordlessly as she looked up at her girlfriend, eyes patient and understanding. Amity took a shaking breath before she began.
“When I was 11, I met someone. Her name was Meliah. Meliah and I were…really close friends. She lived on a different part of the Boiling Isles though. We met through Penstagram and bonded over our shared love of another book series, one similar of the Azura ones.” Amity paused as she took the ends of her dress and balled them up into her fists. Luz laid a gentle hand onto Amity’s and looked at her.
“Take your time, sweet potato.” Luz said. Amity nodded before starting again.
“It didn’t take long to become good friends with her. We both shared our love for the books, figurines, and over our not-so-good home lives. She had it worse, to an extent, and I’ll never forgive myself for being jealous of that.” Amity paused and looked up at Luz, searching for any sort of negative emotions in her eyes. Amity couldn’t find one spec.
“…I remember some of times when she’d message me about her day, and I couldn’t relate, and all I could do was be there for her. One day was…especially hard for her. I remember the call we had. She was just…bawling…so much.” Amity wiped tears from her eyes and continued.
“She, uh, she took about a week after that day to reply to me. And I only got one response.” Amity started sobbing.
“She-she died that day… And I just—I felt so helpless…” Amity looked at Luz as tears streamed down her face. The human took her into a hug as the witch sobbed.
“Was I not enough? Luz…Did I kill her?” Amity asked, shaking from the sobs.
“Ami…No… Amity of course you didn’t kill her. Sometimes people can’t find the good in their life because they blocked it out. I promise that you were the good that she wasn’t able to see. And I’m so sorry that happened Ami…” Luz looked at Amity, who was turned away.
“You know…that’s not the only time that happened…” Amity said. “But this one was my fault.” Luz opened her mouth to speak before Amity put her hand over it.
“Just wait. I met another friend, Juli, when I was 14. Same thing, through Penstagram, but this time it was different. We were both matured, but still felt like kids, if that makes sense.” Luz nodded as she rubbed circles onto Amity’s back, her breathing slowing down.
“We uh, we promised stuff to ourselves.” Amity said. “I promised to text her everyday to make sure that she was okay, drank water, ate—everything. And she would do the same for me.” Amity swallowed the lump in her throat before continuing the next part.
“One…one day I-“ Hiccup. “I forgot to t-text her…” Amity choked on her sobs, shoving her head back into Luz’s shoulder. “She killed herself, Luz…She killed herself and I couldn’t help her! I forgot to text her! Luz it’s all my fault… Please, I’d give everything I have to have that day back so that I could text her again.” Amity cried loudly. She felt hopeless all over again. “I still watch her last post she made sometimes…Fireworks…She loved fireworks.” Amity whispered, tears still streaming down her face.
“I wish I could tell you more, but there’s too much to go through and unpack, but those two…those two hurt the most I think…” Amity said quietly.
“I understand. Well, I don’t understand in the same way that you do, but I can empathise. Ami, I wish that didn’t happen. I wish things had turned out better, but there are things much too far out of our control. But I can promise you that I’ll never leave. Not like that.” Luz said, pulling Amity back to make eye contact with her.
“Promise?” Amity whispered.
“Promise.” Luz whispered back, extending her pinky towards the witch. Amity gave her a confused expression.
“What?” She asked. Luz giggled and shook her head. “Here.” The human said, grabbing Amity’s own pinky and intertwining it with her own.
“It’s a pinky promise. We do it in the human realm. It basically is like a promise, but stronger.” Luz explained.
“Got it, I like that. I think I’ll start using it.” Amity giggled. Luz wrapped her arm around Amity and leaned the two of them against the tree.
“I’m so glad.” Luz whispered, petting Amity’s hair gently.
