Chapter 1: Leaving North Denver

Chapter Text

Chapter One -

“I can’t kill you, Hijo de Puta, so Finn is gonna do it for me!”
“Finn’s arm is mint!”

With a strangled cry, Finn snapped the grabbers neck, and the line went dead. Shaking as he stood up, Finney grabbed a steak from the freezer and tossed it to the dog, away from the door to the stairs.

Walking up those stairs for the final time felt so odd, it was all over. The grabber was dead.

Finney entered the code to the bike lock on the door: 23317. The door clicked open, and Finn’s knees nearly gave out.

He pushed open the door and stumbled out of the house, all he saw was police cars in, the house across the road? He just stood there, breathing in and out, trying to remind himself that he is real.

For a minute there was silence, and then with a cry, Gwen was in his arms. The police came running too, all Finney said to them was “basement.”

Gwen was crying, he could feel it, but he couldn’t look at her. All Finney could focus on was the five bodies being wheeled out of the house across from the grabbers, the five bodies and the ghosts that now stood in front of him.

Finney’s heart sped up, why could he see the ghosts?! He could see all of them, Vance, Griffin, Paperboy, Bruce and ... Robin.

From the looks of it, they could see him too, slowly, Robin walked forwards. Once he reached Finney, he reached his arm out and put his hand on Finney’s shoulder. Finney could feel it, his whole body warmed at the touch, and Robin spoke to him.

“We’re gonna stick around for a while Finney, none of us are ready to move on yet.”

Finn just nodded, with Gwen still in his arms and the paramedics arriving, he didn’t want to look crazy.

He was guided away by a paramedic, he couldn’t feel anything while she checked over him. All he could think about was gwenny and his dad. Shouldn’t he be here?

“Where’s my dad?” Finn asked

The paramedic told him to hold tight and went to get a serious looking lady with a clipboard.

“In our search for you Finney, we looked into your home life, and your father was found unfit by the state to keep you and your sister in his care.”

Finney’s mind started racing, what was going to happen to him and Gwen? Was he even going to see her again?!

“What’s going to happen to me and Gwen?” He asked with a shake in his voice. He did not just kill a man to lose the only person alive who cared about him.

He felt the presence of Robin curled against his side, calming his racing heart. As long as he had the other ghosts with him, he’d be okay.

“You and your sister will be sent to a group home in Indiana, you will be kept together initially, but I can’t tell what will happen with adoption.”

Finney breathed a sigh of relief, they’d be kept together, even though they were moving so far away from home. Finn couldn’t help but think that it was a welcome change, after all that had happened, he was happy to leave North Denver behind for good.

He’d never have to be wary of people knowing his story or being reminded of the grabber in every waking second.

The sad thing is they wanted to get them both out of there as quickly as possible, so Finn wasn’t able to go to any of the boy’s funerals. However, he was allowed to keep one thing each of theirs as “coping”

This is how Finn came to have Robin’s bandana, paperboy's dog’s collar and Vance’s choker around his wrist, Griffin's bike lock on his belt and Bruce's baseball cap on his head.

They made him feel secure, no matter what, whether he could see them or not, they were there with him.

Soon Finney and Gwen were ushered onto a bus heading to Indiana, with only the clothes on their back and a few possessions, Gwen with her cross necklace, and Finney with his spaceship pen.

The bus ride was 17 hours, long and tiring, but Gwen and Finney were together, and that’s all that mattered.

The group home in Indiana was a very unwelcoming looking building; it was cold and seemed to have no happiness left in the place. The only thing holding Finney together was the fact Gwen was there with him, and so were the ghost boys.

Since the basement, Finney had been able to see and hear them clearly without using the phone, he wasn’t sure what made it happen, but he reckons his ‘powers’ are progressing

He can feel their touch as well, if one of them picks at his shirt or ruffles his hair, it happens as if they are physical. Other people can see it too, so Finney knows he’s not going crazy.
