Work Text:
When I first met Barbara Havers at Simon and Deborah’s wedding, she wore her scowl like a badge of honour, glaring down her nose at me as though I were something she’d scraped off her shoe. I’d heard the locker-room gossip about her and had hoped it was just exaggeration.
It wasn’t.
Our first case together was torture - I wanted to do my job and get away from her as quickly as possible. Then she cried. And with those tears, something in me shifted. I realised I had to give her a chance.
It wasn’t easy.
I discovered a woman who was angry, sharp-tongued, and battle-scarred. But bit by bit, I learned her story, how she had given everything she had to the people in her life, only to receive pain in return.
No wonder she was bitter.
And yes, I’ve hurt her too, more times than I’d like to admit. Yet she forgave me, even when forgiveness was the last thing I deserved. From there, somehow, we built something stronger.
Years later, we’re more than partners, we’re friends. I can’t imagine working with anyone else. She teases me, challenges me, supports me, and keeps me grounded. She keeps me human.
I owe her my life, and I don’t say that lightly. Without Barbara Havers, I wouldn’t be here now.
