Work Text:

Relaxing on the bright orange couch of the living room is Ava Noceda-Blight.

The young fifteen-year-old witch is watching one of her favorite shows on the TV, Amphibiland.

She stares at the screen with intrigued eyes, wondering what’s going to happen with Annie and Spring.

It is peaceful and silent…

Well, for a moment, until it is promptly cut off as Luz rushes towards Ava and excitedly calls out the girl’s name. “Hey, Ava!”

Ava jumps briefly, surprised by her Mama’s sudden presence, “Y-Yes?”

The Latina woman takes her place next to the teen, a bright smile on her face. “Guess what day it is?”

“Uhm, Tuesday?”

Luz chuckles softly. “Well, yeah. It is. But it’s Bisexuality Day!”

Ava’s head tilts curiously, eyes filled with wonder. “Oh, really?”

“Yes, ma’am! And I was wondering if you wanna help me celebrate this momentous day!” Luz asks, pulling out a makeup kit filled with nail polish.

“Oh. I uhm, I haven’t done this in a while…” Ava replies softly, scratching her arm nervously.

It is true.

She hasn’t done nail polish or any make-up since… since Hayley passed away.

So, she is really out of shape here.

“Oh, don’t worry! I haven’t used this since, like middle school.” Luz reassures, taking out three nail polish colors: pink, blue, and purple. “So what do ya think? Wanna help me?”

Ava stares at Luz’s warm brown eyes and immediately catches the excitement from within.

She has never once thought about saying no to that sunny smile and optimistic mood, smiling herself.

“Sure…” Ava nods silently, shifting into a crisscrossed position. “Uhm, how do you wanna do this?”

“Here. Let’s do something simple, alright?” Luz says, pulling out her phone and selecting an image from the webs.

She places it down on the coffee table for Ava to get a good visual of what the nails should look like.

It is a simple coating of the bi flag colors with pink in the thumb and index finger, purple in the middle finger, and blue in the third and pinky finger.

“I-I think I can do that…” Ava murmurs, reaching over to grab the black nail filer. “But first, your nails are kind of uhm… ugly.”

“Hey! I chew my nails when I’m stressed, okay?”

Ava snorts. “Okay, I get it.”

She carefully files Luz’s chipped fingernails into a smooth, round look.

Once Ava is done with both hands, she places the file back on the table and hesitantly grabs a clear nail polish bottle, which is the base coater.

“Uhm, I put this on first, right?” Ava asks quietly.

“Si, bebe,” Luz replies, lightly nodding with a smile.

“Okay…”

Ava twists the black cap open and gently applies the coater onto Luz’s nails, starting with her left hand.

She makes sure she covers every area with the clear liquid as neatly as possible.

Her hand is quite shaky, but she manages to thoroughly coat Luz’s nails, switching over to the other hand and repeating the same process.

Once she is done, Ava sets the coater to the side and lightly blows on Luz’s fingers, speeding up the drying process.

Luz giggles. “Ava, you don’t have to do that. It’s quick drying!”

“Wait, really?”

“Yep! Just wait a couple of seconds and we’ll be good to go!” Luz chirps.

“Oh…” Ava blinks. “Now I feel dumb for doing that.”

Luz chuckles lightheartedly, brushing her hand on Ava’s arm. “Don’t be. It was cute.”

Ava grunts in embarrassment, hiding her light blush by looking away.

Luz doesn’t comment. Instead, she chuckles again at Ava’s reaction.

After a minute has passed, Ava checks on the nails by gently grabbing Luz’s fingers and feeling them with the tips of her thumb.

It is fully dried as it has a smooth texture and a nice shine to it.

“Can I see the picture again?” Ava asks softly.

Luz unlocks her phone and slides it over to let Ava see the photo.

Ava squints her eyes at the screen and studies the image for a while.

She nods to herself, muttering. “Okay, pink, pink, pink. Ah, here it is.”

The girl reaches over the nail polish and shakes it up, twisting the cap to pull out the black brush.

She smears off the excess pink on the rim of the bottle and gently applies the nail polish on Luz’s thumb, slowly and steadily.

She starts off at the cuticle of the nail and slowly drags the brush upwards to cover the center of the nail with the polish.

Once she reaches the tip, Ava repeats the process on the left and right sides, making sure to coat it three times.

“You’re really good at this, Ava…” Luz whispers.

Ava glances up at her Mama and watches a bright smile cross her lips, soft and warm.

“T-Thanks…” Ava murmurs, quickly looking down to concentrate on painting the index finger with the blush back once again. “I had a lot of practice with H-Hayley.”

A brief silence follows after that, but it is one of nostalgia rather than gloominess.

Then, Ava whispers ever so softly and glances at her Mama’s brown eyes, “She would have loved you and Mom.”

“And I would have loved her, too…” Luz says, her tone one of motherly warmth. “Equally, of course.”

“Why? Because we’re twins?” Ava remarks, smirking.

“Hmm… Yes.”

Another brief silence surrounds two of them until…

Luz and Ava share a giggle together, a warm atmosphere quickly building as Ava prepares the purple nail polish for the middle finger.

Still, Ava has that soft smile upon her lips, having that Hayley talk in her head.

And this also causes her to get briefly distracted as she accidentally brushes the polish on the skin surrounding the nail.

“Oops, sorry.”

“It’s okay. It doesn’t need to be perfect.”

Ava nods slowly and takes a deep breath, continuing to apply the second coating of purple.

After she is finished, Ava coats the third and pinky finger with a beautiful blue color.

The quiet, peaceful, and comfortable silence from before makes its presence known, filling the space between Luz and Ava.

“Are these fast drying, too?” Ava asks once she has finished with the pinky.

“Hmm…” Luz glances at the bottle and reads the label. “Nope! We’re gonna let these puppies dry for a while.”

Ava nods, brushing a loose lock of hair behind her ear. “Okay…”

With that, Luz sets her left hand on the table to dry.

Meanwhile, Ava gently holds Luz’s right hand to apply the pink polish on the thumb and index fingernails.

This goes for a few minutes with Ava slowly layering all the fingernails with their respective colors.

“And done,” She says with a small smile, finishing the pinky with the blue.

Luz takes a good look at her freshly painted nails, wiggling her fingers. “Thank you, Ava. They look beautiful.”

“Stop…” Ava whines, embarrassed.

“Hey! It’s the truth!” Luz defends, showing them off. “I could never get them to look this good.”

Ava doesn’t know how to respond to Luz’s compliments, fighting off another blush that appears on her cheeks.

However, she does have something on her mind since she is doing this with her Mama.

So, she takes a deep breath and glances at Luz. “Hey, Mama…”

“Yeah, Ava?”

Ava swallows a nervous gulp, wringing her fingers. “Can you do mine? Please?” She asks, extending her hands to her Mama.

She sees Luz having a surprised look on her face, in awe mostly.

She hasn’t told Luz nor Amity about this.

Ava has known this for a while, even since Luz introduced her to the pride flags—specifically the Bisexual flag.

They don’t have these kinds of labels in the Boiling Isles.

Everyone just loves who they love.

And for Ava, it just makes the most sense for her.

Luz still has the stunned expression on her face, making Ava dig her fangs into her bottom lip out of nervousness.

However, her face quickly shifts into her warm, cheerful self along with a bright smile. “Of course, mija.”

After letting hers dry for five minutes, Luz grabs Ava’s fingers of her left hand towards her and slowly files her nails.

It doesn’t take that long, as Ava’s nails are perfectly rounded, only leaving the index and middle nail fingers to be filed.

Then, Luz takes the clear coater and gently applies it to Ava’s nails, the brush creating a nice, slow sweeping motion.

She is very gentle and soft, almost as if she were a porcelain doll that is extremely fragile if ever made contact with the ground.

And she hasn’t even made it to the actual nail polish.

Ava appreciates how gentle her Mama is right now.

She closes her eyes in bliss and comfort, unknowingly letting out a soft vibration from her throat.

Luz chuckles softly.

Ava opens her eyes at the sound, confused. “What?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe it is because you sound like a cute little gatita,” Luz coos, reaching over to pinch her daughter’s cheeks.

Ava’s eyes light up, realizing what that Spanish word is. “Mama, stop!” She whines again, battling her hand away by turning her head.

“Never!” Luz declares with a menacing laugh.

For a moment, the young witch play-fights with her Mama, giggling and chuckling at the ridiculous scene unfolding.

“Oh, what’s going on here?”

Ava’s pointed ear perks up when she hears Amity’s soft voice nearby, watching her walk inside the living room.

“Oh my gosh, Amity! You just missed it!”

“Miss what?” Amity asks with a cocked brow, sitting on the left side of Ava.

“Ava’s cute, little purrs!”

“Noooooo…” Ava hides her blushing face with the palms of her hands.

“Hehe, mi gatita!”

“Okay, okay, Luz.” Amity jumps in, rubbing slow circles on Ava’s shoulder. “Let the poor girl breathe.”

“Hmm… I would say no to that. But! We are getting sidetracked,” Luz says, lightly grabbing Ava’s hands to focus on her nails. “Now, hold still! Imma do pink!”

“Okay, okay. J-Just don’t pinch my cheeks.”

“Can’t promise that!” Luz exclaims, twisting the cap on the pink nail polish.

Amity chuckles softly. “She pulled you into Bisexuality Day, didn’t she?”

“Yeah,” Ava nods eagerly with a timid smile.

She glances at her Mom and notices that she is watching Luz applying the bisexual colors on her.

Amity darts her hazel-filled eyes towards her brown ones, and her lips tug into a warm smile, embracing her.

“So proud of you, sweetie.”

Ava smiles brightly underneath the crook of Amity’s neck.

She can’t help but snuggle further and let out soft purrs, slowly growing louder with each second.

“Gatita!”

Ava groans in embarrassment, the sound muffled in Amity’s skin.

Sooner or later, Luz finally finishes Ava’s nails.

“Alright, whatcha think?” Luz asks excitedly.

Ava takes a look at her fingernails and stares in awe, gasping.

“It’s beautiful, Mama. Thank you,” Ava whispers, smiling.

“No problem! You want me to do yours, Amity?”

“Uh, Batata. You know I’m lesbian, right?”

“Oh, brother. Believe me, I know…”

“Hey, what is that supposed to mean?”

“Anyways!” Luz interrupts, pulling out the nail polish colors for the lesbian flag. “I have the colors!”

Amity is stunned. “I… Are you sure? It’s not even my day.”

“Yep! Come on, Amity. Not gonna leave my girlfriend behind…” Luz says with a cheerful smile on her face.

Amity shrugs. “Sure, why not? Everyone’s gay today.”

“Heck yeah!”

Ava giggles at Amity’s blunt comment, watching Luz file her girlfriend’s nails.

They both work together to paint Amity’s nails, with Luz taking the right hand and Ava taking the left.

After a couple of minutes and letting the nail polish dry, Amity admires her fingernails for a moment.

“Thank you, girls,” She whispers.

“You’re welcome, Mom,” Ava replies.

“Alright! Selfie time!” Luz exclaims, grabbing her phone and switching into the camera app. “Show off your nails!”

Ava gets into position behind Luz with the back of her hand underneath her chin, already smiling at the camera.

Meanwhile, Amity places her chin on Ava’s shoulder, showing off her nails to the camera.

“Everyone says queso!”

“Queso!”

Three or four pictures are taken, and Luz shows them to Ava and Amity.

Luz and Amity engage in their own bickering, arguing which photo is better to post on Picstagram.

But Ava, she glances at her freshly painted nails—pink, purple, blue.

And she smiles, her chest warmed with pride.

She feels safe and loved enough to show off her true self to Luz and Amity.

Glancing between her two mothers, Ava finally has a place where she can proudly call her home
