Through The Eyes of Others

Summary:

Yoshino never really liked Kushina Uzumaki, too protective over her precious friend, Minato, to really see the girl with a good eye.

But a meal with each other changed her perspective.

And also made her realise that her friends are both idiots in love, and they don't even know it.

Work Text:

Yoshino wanted to pull her hair off, once.

It all started with that knucklehead Kushina, a girl who came from Uzushiogakure to Konoha for reasons only Kami knows. She was loud, abrasive, and would allegedly beat you up with her fists if you so much as spoke ill of her.

And Minato apparently was smitten with her.

Sweet Minato who would rather knit you mittens and brew you hot chocolate when you’re sick. The same Minato who would offer you strawberries from his grandfather’s garden every morning for the first week of Hanami. Well, that same Minato was lovesick over an idiot who can barely talk to anyone without shouting some dattebane gibberish.

Maybe Yoshino was too harsh on the girl, but can you blame her? She slapped her favourite cousin so hard her two front teeth fell off, and it was unprovoked as well! Minato was one of her precious friends, she doesn’t want him to be around bad influences.

Well . . . that’s what she thought at first.

They are both idiots, the enlightenment was forced upon her as she watched Kushina and Minato tip-toeing around each other as if they didn't know one another for over seven years.

“I’m sorry!” Kushina quickly apologised as she withdrew her hand, which had accidentally touched Minato’s when they both had reached for the last piece of tempura.

“No need, you can have it, Kushina-chan!” Minato stumbled over his words, his cheeks turning pink. This only caused Kushina to grow more flustered, her eyes becoming wider before they glimmered like the starry sky in happiness.

“Really? Yatta! Thank you, Minato!” she bit down to the deep fried goodness, her face so expressive Yoshino had come to a clear conclusion by the end of the meal, where she engaged with the red-head the most.

She was . . . nice?

She was nicer than she ever could’ve expected her to be.

And she was smitten with Minato too.

She never cut him off, unless it was for banter. She was sweet but stern with him, even calling him out for taking Yoshino’s tofu, to which he apologised bashfully. She looked at him gently, with a quiet affection that reminded her greatly of how Shikaku looks at her.

And Minato . . . they way he looked at Kushina like she hung the stars themselves. He used subtle touches and gentle words to calm down her anxiety, and how he guided her with so much patience about the theoretical parts of Jutsu pioneering.

They were in love with each other, that much was obvious, and since the feeling was mutual and Minato wasn’t being taken advantage of, Yoshino relented and actually started befriending the Uzumaki.

“I’m sorry for believing Kousei without consulting you,” Yoshino apologised.

“That’s okay! I know he didn’t want to partner with me because I’m not good with a katana, hehe . . .” Kushina nervously laughed, scratching the back of her neck in embarrassment. “I have a quick temper, and I lash out sometimes. Even I find it off-putting when I do.”

Yoshino smiled. “Well either way, I know Minato won’t be too kind to him in the future,” she sighed, shaking her head.

“Hm?” Kushina tilted her head in confusion. “What do you mean? Why would Minato do that?”

It was Yoshino’s turn to become confused. “Because he’s your boyfriend, of course. He’s really protective over you.”

Kushina looked blankly at her, so much so that Yoshino started regretting ever mentioning it. Were they not . . ?

Oh, no. Yoshino paled slightly. Did he not confess?

Then Kushina bursted out laughing. “That’s a good joke! Minato would never feel the same and you know it, dattebane!”

Yoshino was ready to kill a bird, maybe two.
