San ends the call and exhales loudly, pressing the heels of his hands against his eyes to ground himself. From the day he had left—no, fled—Cheonghae on the last bus, he’d promised himself that he would only ever look at what was in front of him. He’d thrown himself into school and work, not only to maintain his scholarship, but to forget he’d ever lived in a small town by the sea, haunted by the memory of the storm that had taken his grandfather away from him.
But San is older now. Wiser, too. And he has learned to accept that sometimes, the only way forward is back.
