To Tell You The Truth

Summary:

The Legendary Dragons pay a visit to Longan Dragon Cookie and Licorice Cookie. Things don’t go as planned.

Work Text:

Longan Dragon Cookie stared at this so-called ‘Pregnancy Test’ in disbelief. Their eyes glanced at the key and the main body of the test back and forth. The two red lines had spoken; they were pregnant. Longan Dragon Cookie and their mate, Licorice Cookie, had agreed numerous times neither of them truly wanted children. The closest would be Poison Mushroom Cookie, but it was more of a sibling relationship more than anything. Their heart started to race as they panicked, not entirely sure what to do about this revelation.

They could always terminate it. It was within their power. All they had to do was shift back to their male form.

No! They knew that they and Licorice Cookie had previously agreed upon them not wanting children, but…they should still tell their mate about this. See what they want…maybe they’d reach a consensus…they sighed as they put the test on the side of the sink. Licorice Cookie would be back soon, and maybe they could think of a reason to justify it. Yeah…that was the best course of action. All they had to do was wait for him. A soft smile crept upon their face at the mere thought of him. To think such a proud dragon would fall in love with something they deemed beneath them. They understood why the other dragons liked these lower beings so much. A knock on their door echoed, as they perked up in excitement…but also slight dread.

How to tell him?’ They thought as they rushed towards the door.

“Licorice Cookie, can we…” Longan Dragon Cookie’s question trailed off as they not only saw their mate, but their siblings and nibling.

“In my defence, they came even though I told them not to.” Licorice Cookie justified, as Longan Dragon Cookie stared in disbelief, why would their siblings visit them at this time?

There goes my chance at a private conversation with him right now.’ Longan Dragon Cookie smiled as they prepared to play perfect host to their siblings.

“What brings you here at this time? Shouldn’t you be with your mates?” They asked, before standing aside to let them in, before making a chirp to Snapdragon Cookie. “Rough day?” They asked Licorice Cookie, who seemed more exhausted than usual, if the bags under his eyes were anything to go by.

“Pomegranate Cookie…” he muttered, before gently holding Longan Dragon Cookie’s hand. “Come on, we have guests to treat.” He responded, as the dragon closed the door behind them.

A few hours later

Laughter filled the room as Ananas Dragon Cookie told the story of how he failed miserably to court a cookie, with every single detail recalled perfectly. The berry juice was flowing amongst most of them, with some exceptions; Licorice Cookie rarely drank, Snapdragon was a baby, and Longan Dragon Cookie made an excuse as to why they wouldn’t, settling on not being in the mood. They still needed to think of the perfect excuse as to get Licorice Cookie alone to tell him the truth. These sort of things weren’t always easy to admit, since very few dragons would’ve even considered terminating the pregnancy without dire circumstances. Their distraction was obvious to everyone else, even with their siblings mildly drunk.

“Longan Dragon? I-Is something wrong?” Pitaya Dragon Cookie asked, snapping Longan Dragon Cookie back into reality. Licorice Cookie gently touched his mate’s hand, also worried.

Longan Dragon Cookie glanced downwards, a little scared and worried.

“It’s nothing…just need…a break. Everything’s…been a bit much.” They explained, despite the fact they knew no one was buying that excuse, but they couldn’t tell otherwise.

I should tell him…but I don’t want to make it a deal with the other dragons…what’ll they think?’ They found themselves thinking, before glancing downwards. Their mate’s hand was still in their own, and this was nice and comforting.

What most cookies would call obsession, dragons would call healthy love. Despite the fact they weren’t ready to admit it, they assumed pregnancy hormones were making them more and more clingy and needy. Snapdragon Cookie made their way over and started babbling in happiness, before resting on Longan Dragon Cookie’s lap, resting their head on their chest. It was…sweet. Almost what they need. They smiled, not even noticing Pitaya Dragon Cookie had left.

Wait…babies can be adorable…hormones…’ Longan Dragon Cookie thought, only catching themself due to the need to speak with their mate.

Longan Dragon Cookie glanced upwards, just realising their sibling was gone.

“Where’s Pitaya Dragon C-?” Longan Dragon Cookie cut themself off before they muttered the word ‘Cookie’. Their kind would never be cookies, no matter how much they pretended.

“Oh, they’re in the bathroom.” Lotus Dragon Cookie casually mentioned, as Longan Dragon Cookie’s eyes widened.

They just remembered they had left their pregnancy test on the sink in the bathroom, and risked Pitaya Dragon Cookie discovering it. They decided to risk it,

“Oh. That’s nice. Is he sick? Too much berry juice?” They asked, just as Lychee Dragon Cookie opened their mouth to explain.

“WHAT IN THE OVEN?!” Pitaya Dragon Cookie yelled, as Longan Dragon Cookie’s face fell.

Pitaya Dragon Cookie burst through the door, clutching the test in their hand.

Instead of anger, they seemed…excited. “I didn’t know you were trying for babies! Congratulations!” Pitaya Dragon Cookie announced, as everyone stared at the two.

Longan Dragon Cookie felt their world collapse around them as Licorice Cookie’s eyes widened in shock.

“We’ll talk about this later. I just need to talk with my mate first.” Longan Dragon Cookie announced, before removing a confused Snapdragon Cookie from their lap, and storming off into their bedroom, tears falling down their face as Licorice Cookie looked onward in concern.

“Everyone, can you leave? Give me that.” Licorice Cookie announced, grabbing the test out of Pitaya Dragon Cookie’s hand.

Despite the annoyance the dragons felt, they complied, wanting to give their eldest sibling space. They all exited, as Licorice Cookie stared at the test in disbelief. The readings were growing faint, but it was obviously two red lines, indicating pregnancy. He stared into the distance, confused. They decided to speak with Longan Dragon Cookie about this, there must’ve been a reason they hid this.

Licorice Cookie slowly approached their bedroom, not entirely sure what to expect. He knocked politely, before opening the door.

“Longan Dragon Cookie? Can we talk?” He asked, seeing a mount of blankets on the bed. Two golden eyes appeared, as the mound dismembered, revealing his mate.

Licorice Cookie held up the test, a little hurt. “When were you going to tell me?” He asked, sternly, but not threatening.

He didn’t want to push one of the few Cookies who cared about him away.

“I was planning on telling you when you got back, but my siblings were with you and…” They trailed off, as Licorice Cookie walked forward, sitting next to them. “I know you and I both agree we didn’t want children…but…” Longan Dragon Cookie rested their hand onto Licorice Cookie’s, seeking comfort. “Snapdragon Cookie choosing to cuddle with me…I…don’t even know if I want to keep them or not.” They announced, not being able to look their beloved partner in the eyes.

Licorice Cookie smiled at his partner after thinking for some time about this dilemma.

“Well…I’ll be honest. I mainly didn’t want kids because I was worried about how good of a parent I’d be. But, meeting Snapdragon and being pretty good with them also made me have second thoughts.” He admitted, as Longan Dragon Cookie looked at their partner in confusion and awe. “But, it’s still your decision, if you want to uphold our previous agreement, I’m happy with it.” Licorice Cookie admitted, as Longan Dragon Cookie gave it thought. “

You know what…I honestly think it’ll be nice…being parents.” They admitted, after a while. “Together?” They asked, holding out their hand for Licorice Cookie to take, curious.

“Together.” He responded, grasping his mate's hand.

Even if they initially didn’t want this, they were willing to pave that road together as parents.
