Chapter Text
Sunlight bled through the blinds in pale stripes, painting the bedroom in soft gold. Jeff stood by the doorway for a moment, listening to the quiet rhythm of Oswald's breathing. He still wasn't used to the slience- no muffled screans, no echoes of the pit, just his son, safe in bed. Safe for now.
He stepped inside quietly, his footsteps barely a whisper against the carpet. Oswald stirred at the sound, rolling onto his side and clutching his stuffed rabbit. His hair was messy, sticking up in uneven tufts, and his pajamas were twisted around his legs from the night's restlessness. Jeff's chest tightened.
"Morning baby boy," Jeff whispered, kneeling beside the bed. He smoothed the blanket up over Oswald's shoulders, brushing the hair back from his forehead.
Oswald blinked sleepily, rubbing his eyes with small fists. When he looked up at Jeff, the boy's expression was open, unguarded, almost too innocent for his age . "Daddy?" His voice was high and soft, clinging to that childlike lilt that hadn't been there before the pit.
Jeff swallowed the ache in his throat and smiled. "I'm right here, champ." He picked up the rabbit that had tumbled to the floor and tucked it back into Oswald's arms. "Come on,let's get you ready for the day."
Oswald yawned, stretching like a much smaller child, then held his arms up wordlessly. Jeff obliged, lifting him up with ease. For a heartbeat, Oswald clung tightly to his neck, burying his face against Jeff's shoulder. Jeff held him close, pressing his chin gently against his son's hair. Every time he carried him like this, it felt like a second chance- proof that Oswald was still here, still alive, even if something inside him had changed.
They moved through the quiet house, Jeff keeping one arm wrapped securely around Oswald. In the bathroom, he set his son down and crouched so they were eye to eye. "You want to brush your teeth like a big boy today?"
Oswald nodded shyly, gripping his rabbit in one hand while Jeff handed him a toothbrush with the other. He smeared too much toothpaste on the bristles, then looked up nervously as if waiting to be scolded. Jeff only chuckled. "That's alright. We'll fix it together." He helped squeeze the extra paste back into the tube, then guided Oswald's hand as he brushed. Little things like this- helping but not taking over- felt like victories.
By the time they reached the kitchen, the morning light had brightened, catching on the edges of dishes stacked neatly in the sink. Jeff set Oswald at the table, sliding the rabbit into the chair beside him like a silent breakfast companion. He started on pancakes, humming under his breath, but kept his eyes flicking back to the table every few moments.
"Juice?" Oswald asked, his voice soft but clear.
Jeff blinked, then smiled "Sure thing. Want to pour it today?"
Oswald nodded, standing carefully on tiptoe to reach the counter. He lifted the jug with both hands, his arms trembling with the effort, but managed to tilt it into the cup without spilling more than a few drops. "See?" He looked up at Jeff, eyes shining.
Jeff's chest ached with pride. "You did great buddy."
They ate together, Jeff cutting Oswald's panckes into small pieces but letting him do the rest. Oswald ate slowly, humming between bites, sometimes leaning over to whisper something into his rabbit's ear. Jeff let the sound wash over him, a fragile slice of normal life that felt almost too good to be real.
When breakfast ended, they settled into the living room. Jeff spread a blanket on the floor, scattering blocks, soft toys, and picture books. Oswald immedialtely dropped to his knees and began stacking blocks into a crooked tower. Jeff sat nearby, sipping coffee, eyes never leaving his son.
"Look Daddy!" Oswald's tower wobbled dangerously, then collapsed in a soft clatter of blocks across the floor. His face fell, the joy draining in an instant.
Tears welled in his eyes. "I... I worked so hard," he whispered, lip trembling. And then the sobs came, small and broken, as he buried his face in his hands.
Jeff was beside him in a second pulling him gently into his lap. "Hey, hey- it's okay, baby boy. Towers fall down sometimes. That's part of building 'em."
Oswald hiccuped against Jeff's chest.
"But... but it was perfect..."
Jeff stroked his hair, voice low and soothing. "It was perfect Oz. And you know what? We can build it again. Together."
He guided Oswald's little hands, showing him how to stack the blocks slowly, steadying the base before moving higher. Every time a block slid, Jeff steadied it with his big hand, letting Oswald press it into place.
Soon, the tower rose again- taller this time, more stable. Oswald sniffled, a small smile breaking through. "We did it."
Jeff kissed the top of his head, "No you did it. I just helped See? Falling down doesn't mean it's over- it means we try again, and this time we make it even stronger."
Oswald leaned into him, pride glowing in his watery eyes. "I like it better this way."
"Me too Oz," Jeff said softly, holding him close. "Me too."
The night passed quietly after that. Oswald curled up beside Jeff on the couch, still in his pajamas, humming softly while Jeff rubbed his back. It took only minutes before his eyelids drooped shut. Jeff carried him to bed tucking him in with a kiss to the forehead.
The next morning come too quickly. The sunlight slipped through the blinds, and Jeff stood in the kitchen with a cup of coffee, glancing down the hall toward Oswald's room. His boy had been through too much already. He still wasn't ready to be left alone.
Jeff set the cup down and made his decision.
"Oz?" he called gently, stepping into the boy's room.
Oswald blinked awake, hair a messy halo, clutching his blanket. "Mm?"
Jeff smiled "How about you come with me to work today? You can help out at the pizzeria."
Oswald perked up immediately, sitting upright. "Really? I get to help?"
"Really," Jeff said , ruffling his hair. "But you gotta promise one thing, baby boy."
Oswald tilted his head. "What?"
Jeff crouched down to meet his eyes. "That you'll try. Even if things feel hard. Even if you get nervous. I'll be right there with you."
