Work Text:

There are many things you can expect when dating an idol. You can expect him being gone for months or years on tour, dragging him back home from the studio or the practice room at ungodly hours of the nights, listening to him talk about concept designs and makeup and brand deals, being the unofficial first listener to numerous new tracks (and, even occasionally, being snuck into them).

One of the realities that you've gotten used to is video call dates with your beloved. Sometimes, even when one of you isn't across the world, you both have no energy to physically be with each other, but still desire time together. The video call dates seemed like the perfect solution!

Until now.

The boys were in the thick of comeback and concert preparations and were constantly moving and tired. You were exhausted from work and other life responsibilities, but you couldn't bring yourself to pass up Hongjoong's call when your screen lit up with his face.

"Hi, baby." You greeted with a yawn.

"Hi, my love." Hongjoong grinned, biting back a yawn of his own. He looked comfortably dressed for bed, in what looked like a fuzzy green shirt, his dyed hair messy and brown. "How was your day?"

"Long." You sighed. "But it's over, and I'm home now. What about you? You said you had filming earlier today?"

"Yeah, and some photocard pictures in between." He shuffled to his side and groaned as he settled into his bed, tired eyes looking at the screen, love sick. "It went well. The music video is going to be incredible, I think. I'm really excited for the ATINYs to see it." Be trailed off, a smile gracing his lips as the warmth of the support of his fans washed over him.

"I'm glad." You sighed, matching his soft smile. "I'm glad you had a good day."

The two of you chatted a bit longer, catching each other up on news and the next day's schedule, when your eyes suddenly focused on something in his camera.

"Hongjoong, what are you wearing?"

He blinked, before looking down. "Oh!" He giggled, reaching back behind his head and tugging a hood down. It was the same fuzzy green as the "shirt" he was wearing, with stitched on eyes and a white puff on the edge. "Onesie!" He crowed, pulling down a sleeve to show you the little yellow claws attached at the end of it. "Look!"

You were indeed looking, and your heart thudded at the adorable sight in front of you. You stared, eyes wide as he excitedly explained that the staff had brought it for photocard pictures and they let him keep it since it was so cute on him.

"Do you like it?" He finally asked, noticing you had gone quiet. In response, you buried your face in your pillow and screamed.

"That much, huh?"

"You don't understand." You glared playfully at him, pointing an accusing finger at him. "You do not understand how hard it is for me when you're so cute and all I want to do is smother you in kisses, but you're across the city and we have to be up early tomorrow for work!

"It's not fair!" You wailed, burying your face back into the pillow.

He laughed, and you couldn't help but lift your head slightly to see the smile curling his lips. "No offense, love, but that's how I feel when I'm on tour. The amount of times I've had to restrain myself from buying a plane ticket to see you is more than I can count."

"This is unfair." You continued to protest. "It's unfair and illegal and you should be jailed for crimes against my heart."

"I'll take it off then." He sighed, sitting up and reaching for the zipper.

"Don't you dare, Kim Hongjoong."

He laughed once more, then sighed, flopping back down into the bed.

"I miss you."

A sigh of your own left your lips, and you attempted to smile at him. it came out more of a sad lip twitch.

"Me too, baby." You groaned as you shifted position to be able to hold the phone and angle yourself better. "Life is really busy, and I wish we had more time for each other."

"Things will slow down soon." He promised. "I'll make some time and we can have a few days, just us, before we leave for tour."

"I'll hold you to that." You pointed at him, and he held out his pinky.

The two of you chatted for a little while longer, until Hongjoong let out a small sigh.

"Love, it's late." He told you. "We should get some sleep."

You grimaced playfully at the notion, but nodded. "I guess you're right. We both need to be up early anyway."

"Yeah." He huffed, before looking up at the camera with tired eyes full of love. "Goodnight, my love."

"Goodnight, cutie." You sent him a kiss, which he received with a smile. "We'll talk more tomorrow. Sleep well."

"You too."

The screen went dark, and your arm flopped to the bed, phone dropping from your hand.

It's always just a little bit empty, that period of time after you get off the phone with him. You felt it when he would be across the world on tour, and you couldn't go see him. You feel it now, knowing you're both in the same city, the only thing restricting you from seeing him were the adult responsibilities that required more rest than you would get from a late night visit.

But as you finished your bedtime routine and tried to settle into your bed, that emptiness felt just a little more profound. Was it the fact that you had been in the same city, but haven't had the time to see each other, in over a week? Was it the fact that he looked so cozy and cute and comfortable in that damn dino onesie?

As you settled into bed, pulling the covers over yourself in an attempt to convince yourself to rest, you realized that it definitely was that last one. The outfit planners and stylists really knew what they were doing when they gave him that thing.

With that revelation, there was no doubt that you had made up your mind. So you got up from the bed, grabbed a hoodie (Hongjoong's, of course) and your keys, before slipping on shoes and heading out the door.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hongjoong hadn't moved much from his position after he hung up the phone with his love. He had already been curled up in his bed, but now he just scrolled mindlessly on his phone, not quite ready to face another night in his bed, cold and alone.
It was hypocritical, he knew, to encourage (Y/N) to sleep, citing their early morning commitments, and then staying up late himself, but he couldn't help it. He knew that the distance was hard for her, but she took it so well and supported them, supported him, through it all that he just couldn't help but be grateful to her.
Soon. He promised himself, finally turning off his phone screen and tossing it aside. Soon we'll get to spend some time together. I'll make it happen.
Before he could fully drift away into sleep, he became vaguely aware of the door to his room opening. He forced an eye open, catching a glimpse of a figure in the dim lighting.
"(Y/N)…?" He was answered with a sweet peck on his cheek, and he bloomed with a grin. "My love, what are you doing here?"
"Do you realize," She started, pressing another kiss to his cheek. "How freaking-" A kiss to his other cheek. "Adorable you are?" His forehead this time, right under where the hood of the onesie rested.
"That does not answer my question!" He giggled out, turning his body to receive hers with open arms, letting out a small grunt as she practically launched herself onto him.
"It is!" She laughed back, resting on his chest to cup his face, squishing his cheeks together. "You're over here looking so damn cute while I was suffering, cold and alone, in my bed across the city. How was I supposed to not come and give you kisses?" She finished her statement with a great big kiss to his nose.
"(Y/N)-"
"Nope! Not listening!" A few kisses were spread across his cheeks again.
"(Y/N)-" A kiss to his lips interrupted him.
"Shh."
"(Y/N), please!" He laughed, finally managing to wrestle her hands off his face, holding them hostage together as he leaned up and gave her a sweet kiss. She received it with a hum, melting into him lightly. When she and him pulled apart, she sighed, leaning down to bury her nose in his neck. His hands released hers so his arms could wrap around her, pressing her further into him, and he let out an answering sigh of contentment.
"I just really missed you." She mumbled, muffled. "We haven't seen each other in so long. I can lose a few hours of sleep if we can just lay like this with each other for a while."
He hummed at that, pressing a peck to her head. "I can live with that."
