Work Text:

Bucky’s past as the Winter Soldier was something that could have been a major obstacle for your relationship. The fact that he had been trained, brainwashed, conditioned to turn into a killing machine as soon as he heard those specific words, forget all about himself and people he loved for a moment when that happened.

You had been forced to fight him too once, it happened when you had freshly started a relationship. He had been captured briefly and then appeared to the battlefield, trying to kill everyone. After a lengthy battle, you had managed to jump onto him and hold him down while others put him to sleep and carry him back to the van.

Since then, Bucky had been insecure of your relationship. He was no longer certain you weren’t afraid of him — hell, he was afraid of being triggered to start killing people again if someone managed to activate it. He was terrified of losing you, of being the one who’d kill you. Your family hadn’t been particularly fond of the idea of him dating you in the first place, so when the risk actually existed that he could kill you for reasons he himself couldn’t control? He wasn’t sure if he should just break up with you or trust you know the limits, trust you trust him and aren’t afraid of him like so many others would be.

He wanted to be your hero. He wanted to hold you in his arms, and sometimes he wondered if his constant questions and requests to reassure him were taking a toll on you, but you never complained. You were always so damn understanding and looked at him with so much love in your eyes that it felt impossible for him to give back to you as much as you gave him.

When you got hurt in a battle, he always stood by your side, kissed your pain away, banished any nightmares you got over the terrors you had to see in a war. When you laid in bed together in your shared apartment at night, he kissed your head and told you everything was going to be alright. He knew you felt awful and weak. Like you were an Avenger, you weren’t allowed to feel scared, but Bucky knew better, reminding you that even the greatest soldiers needed solace, to see the light, to have hope. He just knew the exact right words to make you calm down and remember that fear wasn’t a sign of weakness.

In return, you helped him with his problems. You had talked about his trauma of being captured and brainwashed to be the Winter Soldier over and over again, he sometimes felt bad how much you had gone through the same thing, the same words. But you always told him you want to help him to remember why you love him so much, why you had stayed — playfully adding it wasn’t just because of how he looked, but what was in his heart, what he had done to make amends to people he had hurt over all these years.

You were there with him, swearing you’d always be his, and he would always treasure it.
