Chapter Text
Tess Galloway thought that being a barista at the Jitterbean stand at Godolkin University would be a quick and easy way to score some good tips given its prestigiousness. Not only that, but she'd get to be around people with superpowers. It was practically a dream come true for her. But, at the start of this semester, said dream ended up becoming a living nightmare. 'Never meet your heroes' as they say. Everywhere around her were entitled drunk with power douchebags that believed that since she's a human, they're free to walk all over her; violently if they wish. And unfortunately, they're right. She could barely get through a shift without experiencing at least one panic attack regardless of the Xanax she's taking. Not to mention losing more of her hair with each passing day from the unrelenting stress. She wished someone would stand up for the little guy, but she knows nobody ever will. This is a world where might makes right and because she's not in a position to get another job right now, all she can do is grit her teeth and pray everyone here is simply filled with hot air. Mercifully, the Starlight posters that plagued her stand hadn't appeared for a few days now, so the threats disappeared with them.
"There you are you Starlight loving bitch!" She heard someone shout.
"Fuuuuck!" Tess swore as two Supes approached her. One of which she recognized as having acidic spit as a power.
"W-what now?" She stammered while pulling out her Xanax pills. "Do you see any flyers around here?"
"Fuck the flyers!" The bigger Supe of the two yelled, slamming his fist into the counter, taking out a sizable chunk of it and making Tess drop her pills. "This is about the toppled over Homelander statue just outside!"
"Y-y-y-you really t-think I had something to do with that?" She said stammered. "I don't have any powers!" She cried out showing him her human badge.
"Good," the bigger one said then grabbed and pulled her over the counter with ease before forcing her to her knees. "That will make this a whole lot easier!"
"No, please NO!" Tess begged.
"So long, Snowflake," the Supe said and raised his fist when suddenly someone's hand grabbed his wrist.
"Pick on someone your own SPECIES!" A masked female Supe shouted and then threw the larger Supe across the room.
"Holy shit!" The acid spitter shouted only for the female Supe to punch him to the other side of the room. She then gave a nod to another masked Supe in the room who rushed to Tess' side.
"You're going to be ok, I promise," she said and helped Tess to her feet. "Brace yourself," she advised and then the two of them were gone from the cafeteria in a flash.
Her friend stayed behind and glanced at a timer on her watch quickly approaching zero. She sprinted at the larger Supe, when his friend body checked her into the Jitterbean Counter, knocking her to the floor. He stood directly in front of her and began readying himself to spit, but just as the masked Supe's timer was about to hit zero, she kicked straight up and hit the spitter in his balls. He gave out a large gasp and crumpled over; acid spit trickling out of his mouth and eating into the floor.
The masked Supe pulled herself back up to her feet in time to see the bigger Supe charging straight at her when something neither of them could see suddenly struck him across the face.
"What the shit!" He cursed and then got struck in his stomach making him bend over in pain. "Who's there! Show yourself!" He commanded, only for the masked Supe to grab him and then hoist him over her head.
"You can't fly can you? Let me help you with that," and with a mighty heave, she tossed him straight out the window. Fortunately for him, they were on the first floor.
Once he was gone, the female Supe observed the other students watching her. "I know some of you out there give a shit for the little guy! FIGHT!" The word 'Resist' is quickly spray painted across the room while something discreetly jumps into the masked Supe's hands. "RESIST!" She shouts and then her partner sped back into the room, took hold of her, and they both vanished.
The two Supes sped into an abandoned warehouse a couple of miles away from Godolkin University and removed their masks revealing Harper and Ally. The thing that jumped into Harper's hands jumped out and grew revealing Emma.
"Oh my Gosh, Harper you were amazing!" Emma exclaimed.
"Not as cool as you were taking that guy down while being the size of an ant, babe!" Harper said then pulled Emma in for a kiss.
Ally sighed and glanced over at Tess. "You'd never know they've been dating for only a week," she chuckled, but got serious upon noticing Tess still being shook up. She walked over and sat down next to her. "I know this is kind of redundant for me to ask, but how are you?"
"I don't know," Tess replied. "The Homelander statue. Was that you three?"
"Yeah," Emma responded having broken away from her and Harper's kiss and now getting dressed.
"Why?"
"Because someone needs to let these assholes know their power trips aren't going to go unchecked," Harper answered.
"But, they'll just take their frustrations out on the humans," Tess cried.
"Hey," Harper said, kneeling beside her. "No they won't. We won't let them. I promise."
"How can you promise something like that? There's only three of you."
"For now, but, it's like I said. Some of us do give a shit," Emma reminded her.
"It goes without saying, but, you can't go back to your job," Harper told her.
"Obviously," Tess said through the still flowing tears. "I'm emailing my resignation when I get back home."
"No, don't even do that," Emma said. "Vought being Vought probably doesn't even remember who you are, so don't give them a reason to do so. Just go back home and lay low for a little while."
"I'll keep an eye on you as well," Ally said. Tess leapt forward and hugged both her and Harper. "I don't know how to thank you." She broke apart from them and gave Emma a hug as well.
"You don't have to. It was our pleasure," Emma said.
"And we're just getting started," Harper declared.
