It was Mr. Kenobi’s class, and in theory, they were supposed to be testing over history. But he bent the rules to have finals early, and now his students had nothing left to do. Some kids managed to sneak in a game console in, and Anakin was in the middle of it all, playing a fighting game with a borrowed controller.
Ahsoka was watching, but still paying attention to her surroundings. A phone was playing music out loud. It was probably Anakin’s, judging by the music (“Are we are victims of opportunity…”) and the fact that Anakin grabbed the energy drink next to it whenever he had the time.
Ahsoka would have ignored him that year or even be slightly scared, but he never seemed like the loose cannon she was warned about. He went to Mr. Kenobi’s tutorials at the same time as her, saying he didn’t understand anything at the start of each session. By the end he would always leave as fast as he could to get to class, but Ahsoka knew he went there by choice, not because he was failing the class (although he often was), but because he just preferred it to being at home.
Ahsoka remembered him mentioning before that he was also on the debate team. He said he loved debating (he did) and he was a natural pro at it (he definitely wasn’t). Really, it was some combination of having a crush on one of the officers, and wanting an excuse to stay at school.
Ahsoka never worried about him hurting her. Anakin had specific things that upset him, and she found them understandable. And besides, his whining was strangely endearing. It reminded her of herself. After all, they were more similar than they seemed. Even, apparently, in music taste.
She leaned over to Anakin. “Hey, is that “Reflections” by We Are The In Crowd? I love that song.”
“Yeah, it’s good.” He smiled, looking back at her. Two people with more in common than anyone thought.
