Chapter 1: a blanket and a name

Chapter Text

Rain taps against the apartment windows as thunder rumbles in the distance. A flash of lightning lights the room, and then—ring. The doorbell cuts through the storm’s roar, sharp and urgent.

Remus glances at the clock, frowning. "Who's here at this hour?" he mutters, pushing himself up from the chair. The storm rattles the windows as he crosses the room and opens the door. On the doorstep, sits a small brown crib, rain dampening it's edges. A tiny giggle drifts from within, and a bundled baby peaks out from a soft blanket. On top, a piece of paper flutters slightly in the wind: "Harry."

He stares down at the baby, the tiny giggles filling the cold night air like sunlight breaking through clouds. His chest aches, a strange weight pressing against his heart. The child's eyes, the skin, the messy dark hair—everything mirrors James Potter. Every feature reminds him of his old friend. And yet.. confusion twists in his mind. Why is he here? Why did James leave Harry like this, but not come with him? Why is harry alone? The question swirl, sharp and heavy, as he bends closer, unsure whether to cradle the child or demand answers from the storm itself.

Remus shakes his head, forcing himself out of the spiraling thoughts. I should get him inside first, he tells himself. bending down carefully to lift the tiny bundle. The storm presses around him, but for now, all that matters is getting Harry out of the rain and into the warmth of the apartment.

As Remus carries the baby inside, the door clicking shut behind him, Sirius’s voice cuts through the thunder: “Who’s that…” His eyes widen, landing on the small crib cradled in Remus’s arms.

Remus swallows hard, his heart still hammering. “I… I found him,” he says quietly, his voice almost lost beneath the storm’s roar outside.

Sirius steps closer, eyes wide, a mix of shock and disbelief on his face. "Found him? Found who?"

Remus sets the crib down gently, brushing a wet strand of hair from the baby's forehead. "Harry... his name is Harry," he says, Remus swallows hard, his heart still hammering. “I… I found him,” he says quietly, his voice almost lost beneath the storm’s roar outside.

Sirius crouches slowly, staring at the tiny, bundled figure, his usual bravado faltering. “Harry…? You mean… James’s kid?”

Remus nods, his jaw tight. “Yes. And he’s alone.”

Sirius exhales sharply, running a hand through his hair. “Alone…? Who would—why would anyone—” His words falter as he leans closer to the crib, eyes softening. “He’s… he’s like him… just like James.”

Remus looks at the baby again, the same ache twisting in his chest. “I don’t know why he’s here, Sirius… but we can’t leave him out there.”

Sirius nods slowly, finally steadying himself. “Right… then we don’t. We take care of him.”

The storm rages on outside, but inside, the room feels impossibly quiet, as if the world has narrowed down to just the two of them and the small bundle in Remus’s arms.
