Home (Is Where Your Heart Is)

Summary:

Pansy wakes from a nightmare, but now, Luna is there to keep her in the present.

Work Text:

She wakes with a scream.

Luna's by her side immediately, her soft weight reassuring after the memories of fiery pain. The liquid glow of her eyes that once felt like divine judgement are now the only thing that keeps Pansy afloat and in the moment.

"You’re safe," Luna says.

Pansy's breath slows as she takes in her love's distinctive vanilla smell layered over the woodsy scent of their cottage. Her eyes catch on the beam of moonlight illuminating the dark room, casting Luna in an otherworldly glow, so different from the cruel flashes of spelllight. Soon after, she starts hearing the chirps of the nest of crickets spilling in from outside the open window as her thunderous heartbeat and the screams haunting her dreams finally recede.

"You're here," Luna adds, and the quiet of her voice shoos away the ghost of their past.

Pansy sighs, leaning into the soft strokes of these delicate fingers as they draw small circles onto her arm and the breath tickling her face. There's no impatience in her movements, merely the quiet sort of reassurance that goes without words, understanding without needing to press for details.

It's still the only touch Pansy can tolerate unconditionally.

I'm here. It's as simple as that, when Luna says it. In her own convoluted way, she makes everything sound straightforward. Makes people understandable. Not just others, but Pansy herself as well. Luna's shown her that although she may need to show her edges, she doesn't have to define herself by her brokenness, that hope is something worth holding together and reaching out for.

In her understanding, Luna inevitably makes her want to be more. Better, maybe. At least good enough to be able to hold her.

"Don't make yourself small, they've done enough of that," Luna hums as if reading her thoughts.

Pansy feels herself bundled tighter, so she uncurls into the hold. Warmth suffuses her inside and out, filling the cracks and empty spaces of her heart. It's become easier to admit in Luna's steady presence.

"Thank you," Pansy whispers as she lets her eyes drop back into relaxation.

Luna smiles back at her, never interrupting the soft, healing touches.

And like those possessions scattered and broken by the world's heartlessness, Pansy knows that she would always find her way home to Luna. She sleeps peacefully in the certainty that her love will always put her back together.
