Work Text:
Kaito was always introverted by nature. He was born with a rare genetic mutation in his hair that made it blue. Furthermore he was relatively skinny and weak willed making him an easy target for bullying at his old elementary school. He had no friends and even his teachers were creeped out by him. At first this didn't bother him, Kaito still had his parents who always treated him with kindness and respect, who comforted him, supported him, and even fought for him whenever he was unjustly treated at school. For awhile Kaito thought he never needed anyone but his parents. To him they were his universe the one constant in his life he could always fall back on when times got to hard. He couldn't imagine ever caring for another human other than them, or so he thought.
At age 9 Kaito met a girl named Hatsune Miku.
The two of them had met when she transfered over to his school at the start of 3rd grade. The first thing Kaito was quick to notice about her was her hair. Like him she too had a rare genetic mutation that made it the color teal, because of their shared traits the two of them became quick friends. In the first day alone Kaito and Miku became an inseparable duo, they spent the whole day chatting with eachother on how it was like growing up with their condition. To eachother's surprise they ended up sharing more things in common than they thought. Both of them were teased, bullied, and ostracised for the color of their hair. In fact the bullying got so bad on her end one of her classmates poured boiling water on her left eye, permanently blinding it, forcing her to wear an eyepatch for the rest of her life. Upon hearing that Kaito couldn't resist pulling her into a tight hug. Both of them started crying on the other's shoulder and neither of them stopped until all the tears were out. Kaito never reached this level of understanding with anyone before, despite his parents support they couldn't relate to his problems at all, but it was different now. After years of feeling like he was the only one who had to suffer like this, there was finally someone who understood him who lived a similar to him, who felt the same pain as he did. In just one day Kaito had a new mission in life, to make the girl beside him the happiest in the whole world, to never again let her suffer alone anymore and the blue haired boy had a feeling that she felt the same.
8 years later.
A soft beeping sound reverberates around the small apartment. Not quite the awakening Kaito was hoping for. When he tries to reach for his iphone underneath his pillow, the source of the slowly dilating noise, he realises he placed it on the work desk on the other side of the room. "Dammit i forgot to turn off the alarm again" he thought before letting out a loud groan of annoyance. Finally finding the energy in himself to get up from his bed he walks slowly towards the source of his frustration, hitting off and slamming it down on his desk with as much force as he could muster on 5:00 am, which wasnt much. Kaito always hated the early mornings, ever since his parents died last month he stopped going to school indefinitely. He found no purpose waking up so early when he wasnt even attending classes at the moment. At first multiple of his classmates and teachers came by to visit him trying to help him, which he ignored, because who were they to think they could possibly assist him when they barely even interacted to him? But now the only person he would let near his door was his best friend the ever familiar Miku.
Kaito didn't really feel like going to sleep anymore and since his awake he might as well start the day early. He makes his way towards his bathroom, then stops when he hears the sound of a notification coming from his phone. Turning back to his desk he opens it up again to see it was a text message from Miku.
- Hey I'll be coming over again today on my way to school...
- If you need anything you could let me in...
- I miss you.
...
- I dont really need anything else other than the school notes you give me at the moment.
- And Im sorry but I don't think I'm ready yet to come back.
- If it makes you feel better. I miss you too.
...
- Thats okay I understand your still grieving.
- Im just about finished getting ready.
- I'll be at your door in a second.
Right on que Kaito hears the doorbell ringing followed by 3 soft knocks. Back when a lot of people would frequent Kaito's apartment, the two of them established a unique knocking sequence that would signal whenever Miku was outside his apartment. Even after the visitors started to die down, they still kept the password out of habbit and just in case more people start to come by again. He walks towards the doorway stopping when he's just inches infront of the door. On the other side Miku crouches down on the floor shuffling through the contents of her shoulder bag for a momment before finally finding the copies of the notes she made for Kaito and dramatically holds them above her head with outstretched arms. "Aha! There they are! I thought i lost them for a moment. She makes sure to straighten the papers with her hands before placing them on the threshold underneath the door and sliding them to the other side.
"That should be all of the material you missed for last week. If i missed anything. I'll make sure to let you know." She says while making a gesture with her left foot, shifting it on the back of her right. "Oh and one more thing. I just want to let you know No matter what happens next in the future, I'll always be here for you Kaito-kun, waiting on your door till the day you decide to come outside again. Wether it be today, tommorow, or even when I'm old and start growing white hairs. Im never going to leave you alone Kaito-kun". She slowly leaned in towards the door at that moment with her only working eye directed towards the peep hole. Almost as if she was trying to see through it."As long as I'm around you're never going to be alone Kaito-kun~". Kaito could have sworn her voice was slightly more sultry when she said that last part. And also was that a heart he could see in her eye? No he must have just imagined it.
Just when she was about to leave Kaito called out to her stopping her in her tracks. "Wait a second... Miku!" Her head swiftly turned around at that moment. That was the first time he had ever said anything to her verbally since the incident. "I never thanked you have i? Even after all this time... Even since we were kids... You were always helping me. When the guys from 3rd grade were bullying me. You were the one who stood up to them and finally managed to convince them to leave me alone. And during that time In our first year of highschool when I forgot my textbook at home. You let me share yours. And even now when during this difficult time for me, after my parents deaths. You stood by me and supported me. Even when I couldn't even show you the courtesy of letting you in my apartment.. or even thanking you for everything you've done for me. I just want you to know i appreciate everything you go out of your way to do for me." Tears were forming on the corners of Kaito's eyes. He didn't even try to stop them from falling. His breaths hitched for a momment and he sniffled while trying to find the right words to say next. But Miku cut him off before he could say anything else. With a warm voice voice. The kindest he had ever heard. Like a field of sunflowers dancing with the wind. With a big smile, enough to illuminate the darkness within his heart. She said: "You dont need to say thank you Kaito-kun". Just a bit her smile began to soften. "My time had been stopped for so long. That day when we first met, when I first arrived at your class unsure on what to do. You saved me. My heart had been frozen for so long. Ever since that day when I lost vision in my left eye, when I couldnt find it in myself to trust anyone ever again. It was you who melted my frozen heart, and kindly made my stopped time begin moving again. Im sure you had no idea how you saved me, or how happy I felt at that day."
"Thats why I'll never give up on you Kaito-kun. I owe you too much to ever stop repaying you. And now I'm sure that feeling is mutual.
"Miku..." Kaito fell silent for a moment. He contemplated his next actions very carefully, wanting to show Miku just how much he cared. With more nervousness than he had ever felt before contrasted with a overwhelming newfound confidence. Kaito opened the door. Miku was stunned for a moment, with wide eyes and mouth slightly agape. But before long the brief shock was replaced with a refreshing relief that spread through her entire body.
"Miku..." Kaito stopped for a momment, taking a deep breath and standing up straight. Looking at himself in the reflection of her eye. He relaxed his face and let out a soft almost serene smile. "I love you".
"Kaito-kun..." Miku paused for a moment and with an equal resolve she leaned in close, standing up by slightly tip toing. And connected their lips together. She wrapped her arms around his neck and Kaito wrapped his arms around her waist. They held eachother close, not stopping until both of them were out of breath. Reluctantly both of them pulled away. Miku buried her face in his shoulder for a moment breathing him in before letting go and starring Kaito straight in the eyes.
"I love you too".
She was definitely going to be late for school.
