Underneath the Moonlight (1992)

Summary:

October 1992, on the Autobahn in Germany

Valerie shows up to help Carmen with her mission

Work Text:

The cool, crisp October air of the German countryside whips past as a sleek, crimson convertible speeds down the Autobahn. The roar of the engine is a deep purr beneath the hum of other passing cars, each one a blur in the vast, open space of the unrestricted highway. Inside the car, Carmen Sandiego is a study in calculated calm. Her red suit, a flawless masterpiece of tailored wool, seems to absorb the sunlight, and the matching wide-brimmed fedora casts a deep shadow over her face. She doesn’t drive; she commands.

Her partner, the disheveled and perpetually grinning Grunge, leans against the passenger side, a smirking mess of tattered denim and greasy hair. He lets out a boisterous laugh. “Wow. What a great road. No speed limit!”

Carmen's gaze is fixed on the horizon, her tone cool and sharp. “Stop laughing and start leaving, asphalt breath. I want you to haul the highway to N’Djamena. It’s the capital of a landlocked African nation.”

Grunge’s grin falters. He fidgets with a loose thread on his jacket. “I don’t know, Carmen. Ain’t there a war goin’ on?”

“No,” she replies without a hint of hesitation. “The Muslim nomads in the north and the non-Muslim farmers in the south used to fight each other, but that’s over. If the city’s too risky, head north to the mountains of the Sahara Desert. And get a camel their blanket. It's cold there.”

“Sounds kinda itchy, Carmen. You know how sensitive my skin is.” He scratches at his neck, a look of genuine discomfort on his face.

She lets out a small, scoffing sound. “That’s only because you never washed it.”

Just as Grunge is about to offer a rebuttal, a startling beep fills the air. It’s not the sound of a modern car, but a friendly, retro honk. The doors of an impossibly large, yellow school bus swing open beside them, the vehicle effortlessly keeping pace with their convertible. Behind the wheel, a woman with a wild mop of fiery orange hair smiles brightly. Her name is Ms. Valerie Frizzle, and she wears a star-studded dress with matching earrings that jingle as she turns her head.

“Need a lift, Sweetheart?” Valerie’s voice is warm and inviting, and the familiar melody softens Carmen’s typically unwavering posture just a fraction.

A half-smile touches Carmen's lips, a rare sight. She gestures for Grunge to pull over, and the convertible obediently swerves to the shoulder. Valerie parks the bus alongside the car, and a moment later, Carmen is on board. The interior smells of freshly brewed tea, antique books, and what can only be described as pure, unadulterated magic. Carmen glides down the aisle, her movements fluid, and takes her usual seat at the front. With Valerie around, Carmen is never truly alone.

"You're a lifesaver, Frizzle. Grunge was getting too close to the speed of sound," Carmen says, the humor clear in her voice.

Valerie chuckles, her eyes twinkling. “A teacher’s work is never done, especially when one of my favorite students gets themselves into a… sticky situation.” She glances out the window at Grunge, who is now picking at his teeth, looking lost and slightly bewildered.

The air between them is thick with a different kind of tension now. It's a comfortable, intimate warmth born of stolen moments and shared secrets. They are both women who live on the run, one from the authorities, the other from the mundane. Their relationship is a safe harbor, a place where their walls come down. Carmen sees in Valerie the reckless curiosity that she herself has, and Valerie finds in Carmen a kindred spirit who understands her particular brand of eccentric ambition. Neither is ready to anchor herself to the other, but for now, this quiet stretch of road is all they need.

Valerie reaches out and places a hand on Carmen’s arm, her touch soft and reassuring. “So, N’Djamena, eh? Sounds like an adventure. Want to ride the Bus?”

Carmen looks out at the endless German sky, a small, knowing smile on her face. "You know I never turn down a ride, Val."
