To look into the faded reflection

Summary:

For some reason, all mirrors disappear, and you can no longer see your reflection. Mizuki has to figure out why this is happening and how to solve it, despite her fear of being open and entirely honest.

Notes:

Hiiii! I had to write this for a school assignment, so I decided to add to it and upload it here. This is my first fic, so please be patient with me. There will probably be some ooc and there will definetly be ooc on the vocaloids. I hope its toleratable!

Chapter 1: To look in to the absent reflection

Chapter Text

Mizuki wakes up from her sleep. She didn't sleep too much, as usual. She told Rui she would go to school today, so she actually set her alarm the day before. She stretches her arm and sits up, trying to convince herself to get up and get ready. She eventually climbs out of bed and puts on her uniform. Mizuki has a habit of staring at her reflection, a little too much. She used to refuse to look at her reflection in junior high, so in her opinion, she is better than she was. When she goes to her mirror, she notices it's simply not there. Maybe Rui, a chaotic but extremely understanding friend from junior high, is pranking her? That wouldn't be possible; Rui knows boundaries. Would Ena, her closest friend from her music group, do this? No, Ena doesn't even go to her house. Plus, she would be asleep.

Mizuki reaches for her phone and turns the camera to face her, but it's not working. She puts on a black screen, hoping it'll reflect her. Nothing. Not a thing shows. She searches her house, looking for something to see herself in. Finally, she gives up. She gathers her hair and ties it up in a ribbon. She adds as many cute accessories as possible. She ties the uniform bow onto her shirt. She hopes she looks cute, in fact, she hopes this is a bad dream. She'll definitely complain to Ena and Rui later.

"Ruiiii! Heya! I'm here!" She calls out, noticing he is with Tsukasa. Anytime those two are together, something always happens. Last time they accidentally blew up something up in the science room. The time before that, Rui built some type of contraption to fly Tsukasa in the air.

"Oh, Mizuki? I can't talk too much. We are currently on the run from the teacher. The teachers are blaming me for the firework that went off near the theater club." Rui sighs dramatically. He is definitely guilty, poor Tsukasa has to follow along with his plans. Well then, maybe An, another friend from junior high, is available to talk. Mizuki quickly says she'll go see An and then leaves.

"An! Hiya!" Mizuki calls out towards her. An waves her hand.

"How are you?" An asks to start small talk, and Mizuki stops in front of her.

"The weirdest thing happened this morning. My mirror in my room disappeared. I checked around and there wasn't a single mirror in the house." She attempts to say in her usual joking manner, but in reality, this is stressing her out. She has to make sure she looks cute and feminine, and that she looks how she wants to. If not, she may actually cry. She hasn't done that in a while.

"Oh, hey! Me too. Kohane said that happened to her as well," An mentions her singing partner. Maybe the universe is telling her something. She's not really religious, but who knows?

"That really is odd... hm... I wonder why that is happening." She says quietly, if it's telling her, she doesn't want to listen, she won't. She imagines that it could be one of the "cringy" stories about embracing your inner self and being honest with her friends, but she would rather run from her problems; it's better for her, right?

“I’m not sure? But I can assure you, you look super cute right now! You always do!” An notices that Mizuki was slightly uncomfortable. Even if Mizuki wasn’t looking uncomfortable, An would still probably tell her the same thing.

“Oh, thank you! You look pretty as well!” The comment definitely made her happy since An smiled in her cool manner. After school, Mizuki logs into Nightcord to complain to Ena.

Amia - “Enanannnn the mirrors are goneeee”

Enanan - “I just woke up, what in the world are you on about??”

Amia - “Enanannnnnnnn”

Enanan - “WTF, the mirrors are actually gone,” she replies a little bit later.

Mizuki then spams the chat, trying to get Mafuyu and Kanade to respond. Mafuyu responds after a little while.

Yuki - “Oh, the mirrors are gone.” Mafuyu replies in her usual formal tone, always with punctuation and good spelling, a stark contrast to Mizuki and Ena’s spelling. Though her typing is still very straight to the point.

K - “I don’t have any mirrors in my house either?” Kanade replies a few moments later.

Amia - “Do you guys wanna meet in Sekai? =^-^=” She asks with an emojicon.

Enanan - “Heading over now”

Yuki - “Okay.”

K - “sure”

Amia - “YIPPEE OKAY”

Mizuki clicks on the untitled song, and the bright light appears, showing that she will be teleported. When she teleports in, she quickly runs up to the others. Mafuyu has her usual emotionless face, Kanade has her usual calm face, and Ena seems tired since she just woke up, but she has put on some basic makeup; it is sort of Jirai kei, but she didn’t want to do all the work yet. The vocaloids gather as well.

“How are you guys doing?” Luka asks curiously. Meiko, Rin, and Kaito hide off to the sidelines, while Luka, Miku, and Len stay close with the group.

“The mirrors are gone.” Mafuyu says blankly, she obviously doesn’t care too much whether she can see herself or not.

“Mirrors, reflections, and cameras aren’t working,” Ena adds to what Mafuyu says.

“The mirrors? They’re gone?” Miku tilts her head, trying to show that she is confused despite her mainly expressionless face. Len imitates Miku’s poses and expression.

“People in my school said the mirrors are gone for them, too,” Mizuki adds, “Imagine if this had something to do with us or the Sekai?” Mizuki decides to speak about what she is thinking, “It could be like one of those things where someone has to figure out that they have to fix themselves or be honest about something, and then the problem will be solved.”

“If it were due with one of us, I blame Mafuyu,” Ena says, trying to get back at Mafuyu for the times Mafuyu unintentionally teases her.

“It could be you, too. You wanted to disappear because of art.” Mafuyu says bluntly, probably a bit too blunt. Ena starts to argue with Mafuyu, not actually arguing to be mean.

Rin then speaks up, “The water isn’t reflecting anything.” Everyone but Mafuyu, Kaito, and Rin looks over at the water. They see that Rin is right; there is no reflection.

“Wow, even in the Sekai it's not working.. What do you think the likelihood that this started from a Sekai? You said there were more Sekais than this one, right?” Mizuki inquires.

Luka answers, “I think it's possible. I can do my best to look into it. If it's due to a Sekai, then it’ll probably be due to you guys,” Luka teases.

“Hm, okay,” Mafuyu replies, “I have to leave now, see you later.” She leaves.

“That was quick?” Ena points out. Everyone moves on pretty fast after she leaves, since it's not normally her fault. They talk about what could be the cause behind the weird phenomenon. Mizuki is still wondering if it's her fault; she does cringe at herself because of that. If it really does have something to do with her, it would probably be her running away. Running away is her greatest solution, so she shakes the thoughts from her head and decides to believe something else is causing it. After a while, they all go home. Mizuki looks at her computer. It seems this is a global phenomenon, but it doesn’t have anything to do with her, probably, so she goes to sleep.
