Chapter Text

You know, it was kind of weird crushing on an eldritch being.

You don't know how or where it came from, but they entranced you, and it seemed that you did the same.

They wouldn't talk much to you, though, so that made things…rather difficult. You were physically affectionate, sure, but you didn't have any verbal exchanges of what the two of you exactly were.

You hummed as you linked the stems of the flowers together.

Flower crown... corny, but cute. Gets the message across.

"Hey," you called out to them, smiling. "I'm making a gift for you, why don't you come sit with me?"

It looked in your direction, making your heart race, only for them to go back to patrolling. You sighed. Figures.

"You know...you can tell me what's going on." You kept linking flowers, frowning. "I know we don't talk that much, but... there's something going on and I don't want you to go through it alone."

They looked back towards you and tilted their head, as if what you said didn't make sense.

Share their burden? That wasn't possible. 

Not like you knew that, though.

They sat down next to you, curious about your next move.

"Um..." You smiled, a little shaky. You were probably too forward, huh?

You both sat in an awkward silence, wanting to know exactly what the other was thinking, but for some reason, there was a barrier between the two of you.

"Ah, I'm done..." You looked up at them, shy. "Can I…put it on you?" 

It looked at the flowers in your hand and nodded. You smiled as you stood up, draping the flowers around their antlers.

They stood up, walking towards the lake you guys were sitting next to, looking at their reflection.

"Do you like it?"

They were quiet for a minute. You started to deflate, embarrassed, until they spoke up.

"This is new."

You gasped at the sound of it’s raspy voice, eyes wide. "Wh-What is?"

"This gift..never had one before." They brushed their fingers through the petals, playing with it ever so slightly.

"Well, I'm glad you like it...?" You said, unsure. You hugged your legs to your chest. "Do… do you like me?" They froze at your question, and you sighed. "Do you even know what we are?"

…

You went to get up and leave. How embarrassing. It was just a fling, nothing more. 

It's not like you guys had full on conversations, so why did you care? Why would you cuddle and get emotionally invested in someone who barely talked to you--

"It’s new." They repeated, enunciating as best as they could. You turned around, confused.

"Us." They clarified.

"Well..." You frowned and leaned against a tree nearby. “Yeah. We’ve only known each other for about a couple weeks, so…” 

They walked closer to you and also leaned against the tree. “I don’t…do this stuff.” They forced out, coughing.

You looked at the ground. Well, if they don't do “this stuff,” then–

“I haven’t for a while.” They added on. “You’re… special.” They lifted your chin up with their finger and you felt your face heat up. “Really…?”

They nodded, and you smiled. “I think you’re special, too.” A grin crept onto their face, which made your heart flutter. 

“Can… Can you tell me what’s going on, then?”

The grin fell from their face and they shook their head. You frowned, moving to sit down under the tree. “Guess we’re not close enough, huh?”

It quietly sat down with you. They had a lot of things they wanted to say, but it was too hard. 

Instead, they gently moved your head to lay on their shoulder, and you both watched the sky go dark.
