Looking in from the Window

Summary:

Fraw kept reaching in, but it felt like she was seeing Amuro and his life unfold from the outside.

Day two of emetokinktoberweek2025: "Not On The --!"

Puking on caretaker | Puking on themselves | Didn't make it

#emetokinktoberweek2025

Notes:

I haven't seen MSG in a long time. My memory of Fraw is from Zeta. I'm using the Wiki, knowledge from the novels, and vague memories of MSG to make this. This is probably the hardest day, so I apologize in advance. This isn't Origins compliant.

Work Text:

Fraw Bow is not a stranger to being a caretaker with another person. She grew up with Amuro, Hayato, Kai, and the other boys on Side 7 and would often help them when they were sick or a mess in class. They used to call her the "mom" in the group, and while Fraw hated it, she grew accustomed to it.

Tem Ray left Amuro to conduct business, and Mrs. Ray left permanently. Fraw became the de facto caretaker. At first, Tem Ray used to pay her and her family, but she refused. She secretly liked Amuro and would use their visits as an excuse to flirt with the other teenager and make weak attempts at getting closer with skinship. Now, she regrets it and wishes she had taken the offer of money.

Amuro is eccentric and is the end of bullying in their classes and in Side 7. He originally came from Earth but moved to space after Amuro's mother divorced his father. The rumors are that Mrs. Ray left the family for a much younger man. Tem Ray coped by putting himself into work, and Amuro dealt with it by isolating himself from everyone in the world. Soon, his classes dwindled to holo courses, and Fraw would only see him at his home.

When Tem Ray isn't at home, Amuro's room is filled with mechanical parts and garbage. Dirty clothing, McDaniel cups, and jugs with unidentified contents littered the floor. The smell would make Fraw gag and force her to wear a mask when she cleaned. Amuro would ignore her nagging or say empty promises, only for the room to end up back in the same state days later. Even when they had to evacuate Side 7 because of the war with Zeon, no matter how much she cried or whined, Fraw always felt like she was seeing Amuro from outside of a window, never invited into his space; an intruder.

She kept herself busy at White Base, not wanting to focus on her family's death. She could sometimes see their corpses and mangled bodies even during her waking moments. Fraw talked to Hayato, Rei, and the therapist about her troubles, and it helped. In fact, she did and talked more to the boys who bullied Amuro than to Amuro himself. He would often tell her to go away or leave him alone, shut her out. She knew he was in pain, suffering while piloting the Gundam by himself. She gave him space but didn't want to wait around forever.

Fraw wanted to talk to the girls more, but it's hard. Sayla is older than her, and while she's approachable, Fraw couldn't muster up the strength, and Amuro harbored a crush on Sayla. In fact, Amuro gazed and conversed more with other women than with Fraw herself. Even the Haro Amuro had, Fraw would hear him talk to it. She's jealous, but so tired of dealing with Amuro never looking at her more than a friend at the most, a nuisance at the least.

Lately, Fraw noticed Amuro has been rushing off after piloting the Gundam straight away. He's antisocial at most, but Amuro would at least say a few words or make an attempt at socializing. Now, he rushes to his room, ignoring everyone. A few of the boys claimed that Amuro finally reached puberty or that "Ray's son is too good for them since he pilots the Gundam." Fraw didn't know what to think, so she decided to investigate herself.

One particular time, Fraw hung out in the hangar to wait for Amuro, having free time. Bright is there too and says a few words when Amuro gets out of the Gundam and removes his helmet. Amuro is pale, swaying slightly, but makes small talk and salutes the captain before rushing off. Fraw noticed that after Bright slapped Amuro in the past, he leaves Amuro to his own devices as long as orders are met. Fraw didn't agree with Bright's mentality, but she has no sway, and he's much older than her, so she can't comment.

Fraw followed Amuro. The hallway is silent and devoid of people. It's creepy, since the White Base is always busy or full of children. She hears a gagging noise, followed by liquid splashing on the ground. Fraw is worried and goes faster, but freezes at the sight that meets her.

Amuro is panting, drooling, and bile is dripping out of his mouth. He has one hand cupped uselessly under his mouth. The vomit is brown, the puddle flowing through his fingers, glising and slimy, dripping down on the ground to the puddle forming under Amuro's feet. It's all over his white uniform too, splashing on his legs and leaving brown stains on his chest. The smell of it alone in the air is making Fraw swallow rapidly and hold back from being sick herself.

'Is this what happened every time?' Fraw thought. As long as she knew Amuro, she couldn't recall him having motion sickness. Is it from piloting the Gundam? Space? Stress? She notices that Amuro is a wreck. His eyes are glassy, his skin pale and green-tinted, and his nose is dripping both snot and vomit down to his stained lips. His breathing is coming out short, and it looks like he would fall over or vomit again at any moment.

He glanced upward, and his eyes widened, as if he had just noticed her presence now. "Fr-" Amuro says at first before it's cut off with a heave, and he covers his mouth, coughing. Some vomit drips out, and Fraw summons up the courage and steels her stomach to help Amuro. She avoids the puddle and helps guide him to his room with one arm around his arm, watching his Adam's apple bob as he swallows back spit or more sick. She didn't know.

They barely manage to get the door open when Amuro retches again, and vomit spouts out through his fingers in a white, brown stream like a hose. Fraw winces as Amuro gags toward the bathroom, making a mess. She notices the drops of vomit leaving a trail on the floor and the sounds Amuro makes in the bathroom, as if his stomach is trying to wring itself out.

Fraw shakes her head and leaves, going to find a supply closet to clean up the puddle in the hallway and the rest of this mess.

Amuro gives Fraw a note later on, apologizing and thanking her. She says nothing as she reads it while washing his uniform, making sure to use extra soap detergent on the spots that vomit soaked through. Amuro became more considerate towards her, but by the time she responded, he left White Base. Leaving Fraw to stop staring at his window in longing and go towards Hayato instead.
