“Why do I have to wear a bowtie?” Jeongguk complains as he tries to pull at the tight piece of fabric wrapped around his neck. They’re currently in the car on their way to a wedding.
Taehyung and Jimin’s wedding more precisely.
“You are literally the best man,” Yoongi tells him, slapping his hand to get it away from the bowtie.
“That doesn’t mean I should have to wear a bowtie,” Jeongguk crosses his arms as a pout appears on his lips.
“It’ll be over soon enough, once the reception starts you can take it off,” Yoongi tries to assure him.
“Thanks for coming with me.”
“I was invited,” Yoongi reminds him. “But you’re welcome.”
“You mean you’re not my plus one?” Jeongguk begins pouting again.
“I can be your plus one,” Yoongi assures him. Honestly, Yoongi would love to actually be Jeongguk’s plus one. He’s been harboring a crush on his friend for a year now. But he didn’t want to ruin their friendship, so he kept it to himself and yearned in silence.
“Good,” Jeongguk wiggles a bit out of happiness, it makes Yoongi’s heart warm, seeing him so happy.
Once they arrive at the wedding venue, they head in towards Jimin’s room. They softly knock on the door before he beckons them to come in.
“We’re here,” Jeongguk sticks his head in before opening the door fully to allow them to enter.
“Guk! Hyung!” Jimin rushes forward, embracing them both in a hug. “You look so nice,” Jimin straightens Jeongguk’s bowtie.
“Are you ready to get married?” Jeongguk asks with a smile.
“It’s almost time, can you believe it?” Jimin puts his hands on the side of his face. “Have you seen him yet? Does he look amazing?”
“Not yet…”
Jeongguk is interrupted by the wedding planner walking into the room.
“Come on, it’s time!” She walks up to Jimin, messing with his bowtie. “Let’s get this show on the road.”
They all exit the groom’s room, walking towards the side door where Jimin will enter.
“I’m going to go take a seat, I’ll see you after the ceremony,” Yoongi gives a little wave and heads towards the lobby.
He’s seated on Jimin’s side of the room near the front just in time, because as soon as he sits down Jimin and Jeongguk are entering as Taehyung and Namjoon enter from the other side. They meet in the middle, keeping a small distance between them, huge smiles on all their faces. But none bigger than Taehyung and Jimin.
The ceremony is sweet and simple, the vows heartfelt to the point that Jimin cries twice; once during his vows and then during Taehyung’s. Jeongguk is prepared with tissues in his pocket.
During one point, Jeongguk catches Yoongi’s eye and smiles at him. Almost as if he’s trying to tell him something, but maybe that’s just Yoongi being hopeful.
He stands and claps with everyone else as Taehyung and Jimin are declared husband and husband and walk down the aisle hand in hand together.
It is announced the reception will take place in the ballroom across the hall, so everyone stands and begins making their way in that direction.
Yoongi feels lucky to find Seokjin in the large crowd, since Jeongguk is busy taking pictures with the grooms.
“I was worried you weren’t going to make it,” Seokjin says with a slap on Yoongi’s back.
“It was hell getting Jeongguk into his bowtie and out the door,” Yoongi laughs.
“He know you’re in love with him yet?” Seokjin raises an eyebrow. Yoongi chokes on air. “Come on, it’s so obvious.”
“And you choose now to bring it up?”
“No better place to meet someone than at weddings,” Seokjin gives him a wink and walks into the ballroom.
“You think he’ll meet someone here?” Yoongi follows close behind him, suddenly feeling panicked.
“I saw a few people eying him,” Seokjin checks the place settings trying to find their table.
“How do you know they weren’t eying Namjoon?” Yoongi continues following him from table to table.
“They were, but I don’t have to worry about that. Namjoon knows my feelings about him.” Seokjin and Namjoon had been together for a year now.
“So what are you saying?”
“Aha!” Seokjin finally finds their table, the one closest to the main table. “I’m saying you need to let him know how you feel.”
“And if he doesn’t feel the same?” Yoongi searches for his name at the table.
“I don’t think you have to worry about that,” Seokjin shrugs. “He likes you, too.”
“How do you know?” Yoongi is suspicious.
“The same way I know you love him, it’s obvious.”
Yoongi hates that his heart begins to fill with more hope. Did Seokjin mean it? Has Yoongi just been blind and hasn’t seen the signs? He takes his seat, his eyebrows furrowed as he thinks back over every interaction him and Jeongguk have had, trying to find a sign that he returns Yoongi’s feelings. But he can’t think of a single one.
His thoughts are interrupted by them announcing the arrival of the new couple. They walk in hand in hand, heading towards the main table with Jeongguk and Namjoon in tow.
Jeongguk gives a wave as he walks past their table which Yoongi returns.
“I say go for it,” Seokjin tells him, blowing a kiss at Namjoon.
By the time it’s time for the first dance, Yoongi is a ball of nerves. He’s wringing his hands underneath the table, biting at his bottom lip. He tries to focus on the happy couple, dancing slowly with their arms around each other. But his gaze keeps going towards Jeongguk, he looks a tad sad watching his best friends.
Once people join Taehyung and Jimin on the dance floor, he watches as multiple people approach Jeongguk, each being sent away with a small smile that isn’t genuine. Seokjin hadn’t been lying; many people here had their eyes on him and that just won’t do.
“I’m gonna do it,” he announces to Jin.
“Thank goodness,” Seokjin rolls his eyes playfully. “It’s about damn time.”
Yoongi stands and straightens his jacket before walking toward the table, where a man is currently talking to Jeongguk.
“Are you sure you don’t want to dance? I promise I’m a great dancer,” he says.
“No really, I’m fine,” there’s that fake smile again. “Oh, hyung!”
The stranger looks back at Yoongi, seemingly sizing him up.
“Do you want to dance?” Yoongi asks, not bothering to acknowledge the man who was just asking the same question.
“Okay,” Jeongguk gives him a real smile as the other man huffs and walks off.
They head to the dance floor, Yoongi putting his hands on Jeongguk’s waist and Jeongguk wrapping his arms around Yoongi’s neck.
“You seem to be popular tonight.”
“I think it’s the bowtie,” Jeongguk tries to joke.
“I think it’s just you,” Yoongi tells him, looking at his nose, not wanting to look him in the eye, because that would give him away and he’s still working his way up to his confession.
“Oh,” Jeongguk looks down as he blushes.
They stay quiet as they sway from side to side, neither able to keep eye contact with the other.
“Do you think you’ll ever get married, hyung?”
“I could see myself getting married if I met the right person,” Yoongi answers honestly. He’s thought about what it’d be like to marry Jeongguk many times.
“You haven’t met the right person yet?”
“I–” Yoongi isn’t sure what to say. They were best friends, but hadn’t dated. Would saying he could see himself marrying Jeongguk be too much too fast?
“I think I have,” Jeongguk answers his own question, causing Yoongi to look up with wide eyes, finally making eye contact. This can’t be happening, not the day he finally decides to confess his love to his best friend.
“I’m happy for you, Jeongguk,” Yoongi says, trying to sound sincere. Really, he is sincere. The only thing that matters to him is that Jeongguk is happy, no matter who he’s with.
“Don’t you want to know who it is?”
Does he? Does he want to know who it is? Who this person is that has apparently swept Jeongguk off his feet and made him think about getting married?
“Hyung?” Jeongguk moves so he’s directly in Yoongi’s view. Yoongi hadn’t realized he’d turned his head.
“You can tell me when you’re ready,” Yoongi finally says, even though it kills him to say it.
“Do you really not know?” Jeongguk asks, as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world.
“Am I supposed to?” Yoongi questions. Jeongguk hasn’t so much as mentioned on going on a date, let alone that he liked anyone. How would Yoongi know? He thought they were best friends, he thought if Jeongguk had met someone he’d know about it. Maybe they weren’t as close as he thought.
“It’s you, hyung.”
“What?” Yoongi’s feet stop moving. He stares into Jeongguk’s eyes looking for a sign that he’s lying, that he’s joking. But all he sees is pure honesty and vulnerability in his eyes. “What do you mean it’s me?”
“I mean it’s you. Everyone knows, except you apparently,” a small smile plays at Jeongguk’s lips.
“What do you mean everyone knows?”
“They all figured it out, I wasn’t that subtle hyung. I asked you to be my plus one even.”
“But—”
“But what? Do you–do you not feel the same?” Jeongguk’s smile turns into a frown.
“Jeongguk…” Yoongi doesn’t know where to start, how to get it out after all this time pining silently.
“No, it’s okay hyung. I had to shoot my shot,” Jeongguk tries to smile but it’s sad. “I…I need to go.”
“Jeongguk-ah, no,” Yoongi grabs his arm and prevents him from walking away. Jeongguk just turns and looks at him and Yoongi can see the tears forming in his eyes. This wasn’t how this was supposed to go.
Yoongi walks forward and places his hands on Jeongguk’s cheeks, searching his eyes for permission. Jeongguk surges towards him, joining their lips in their first kiss. Jeongguk’s eyes go wide as he pulls back, as if he can’t believe what’s happening.
Yoongi pulls him back towards him, kissing him again, trying to tell him everything he’s ever wanted to say as their lips move together. When they pull apart, it’s only then Yoongi notices the crowd clapping. He looks around and they’re all looking at them.
Yoongi puts his face in Jeongguk’s chest, embarrassed by the attention. Jeongguk wraps his arms around him and Yoongi has never felt as safe as he does right now in this moment, in Jeongguk’s arms.
