Between shadows

Summary:

Late at night in Erwin’s quarters, Levi confronts him for working himself to exhaustion. The confrontation turns into something more—charged words, a kiss, and the beginning of intimacy neither of them easily admits to needing. Between candlelight and shadows, they find comfort in each other’s touch.

Work Text:

The candlelight burned low, throwing shadows across the commander’s quarters. Maps and reports had been pushed aside, an unusual chaos spread across Erwin’s desk. For once, he wasn’t bent over them. He was leaning back in his chair, sleeves rolled up, the sharp line of his jaw softened by fatigue.

Levi stood before him, arms crossed, studying him with that unwavering gaze that stripped away armor better than any blade.

“You’re going to collapse if you keep this up,” Levi said.

“Possibly,” Erwin admitted. His voice was rough, low. “But not tonight.”

Levi clicked his tongue. He stepped closer, the sound of his boots muffled against the floorboards. “You’re impossible.”

“And yet you’re still here.”

Something shifted in the air between them. The silence stretched, thick, charged. Levi’s eyes narrowed, not in irritation but in focus, as if gauging the distance between them and deciding whether to close it.

Finally, he did.

Levi braced his hands on the arms of Erwin’s chair, leaning in until their faces were inches apart. The scent of rain and steel clung to him. Erwin felt his breath stir against his lips.

“You think I don’t see through you?” Levi murmured. “Carrying everything until you break. Pretending you don’t need anything.”

Erwin’s chest tightened. He raised a hand slowly, giving Levi time to pull away, and let his fingers trace the line of Levi’s jaw. The skin was warm, smoother than Erwin expected, though scarred at the edges. Levi didn’t move.

“Perhaps I do need something,” Erwin said softly.

Levi’s mouth twitched, not quite a smile, not quite defiance. “Then take it.”

The words unlocked something buried deep. Erwin stood, the chair scraping back, and pressed Levi gently against the desk. Papers crumpled under Levi’s back as Erwin bent to kiss him.

The first brush of lips was hesitant, testing. Levi made a low sound—not quite approval, not quite surrender—and gripped Erwin’s shirt tight. That was all the encouragement Erwin needed. He deepened the kiss, the heat of it chasing away the cold that had seeped into his bones for months.

Levi tasted sharp, like the tea he favored, and Erwin found himself drinking it in greedily. Levi bit at his lower lip, demanding rather than yielding, and Erwin answered by pressing closer, one hand sliding down Levi’s spine.

The desk creaked in protest. Levi broke the kiss with a sharp breath. “You’re heavy.”

Erwin chuckled, breathless. “And you’re small.”

“Say that again and see what happens.” Levi’s glare was undermined by the flush rising to his cheeks.

Erwin kissed him again before he could retort, softer this time, lingering. The room seemed to shrink to the sound of their breathing, the slide of fabric, the restless beat of Erwin’s heart.

Levi’s hands moved to Erwin’s hair, tugging him closer, breaking apart only to rest his forehead against Erwin’s. “You’re ridiculous,” he whispered. “But I’m not leaving.”

Erwin closed his eyes, letting the words settle. For so long, he had carried the silence of command, the loneliness of being the one who decided who lived and who died. But here, with Levi pressed against him, he felt something shift. Not release, not absolution—but something rawer. Something human.

“I know,” Erwin murmured. His lips brushed Levi’s temple. “Stay tonight.”

Levi didn’t answer, but his grip tightened. And that was answer enough.

The candles burned lower, shadows lengthening, until the world outside might as well have been gone.
