mental gymnastics

Summary:

You’re trapped in a show you have created.
You thoroughly know the spindle that spins
these fates that ensnare; these fates that aren’t fated...

Three poems in one about how:
1. Watcher Grian views his agency,
2. What the agency actually afforded to him is, and
3. How he justifies his actions through his views.

Notes:

A defence against Caelynn in Creative Life! ‘Malevolent Watcher Grian AU’ but make it canon-compliant — I always love interpreting Grian, particularly Watcher Grian as exists in cc!Martyn’s version of events (causing chaos to bring fun to the inevitable tragedy, lightening the emotional burden on the players), as someone who enjoys doing harmful acts but doesn’t want to accept that about himself. Instead, he presents them (to both himself and others) as something he had to do or something that had to go that way. Because of his debt to Scar. Because Jimmy punched him. Because everyone on this server steals and that’s how the world works. Because he was ‘just a little villain’, and the villains always lose (as he says to Gem as a ghost at the end of his episode). Or, here, because of his ‘aim’ of combating he Watchers and making the games easier for everyone else. Of course, this is all false, and an impressive showcase of c!Grian’s mental gymnastics — ‘lightening the burden on others’ is an excuse, not a reason.

Work Text:

You’re trapped in a show

you have created

You thoroughly know

the spindle that spins

These fates that ensnare

these fates that aren’t fated

Your orders declare

you sever the strings

You have to cut throats

and use what you save

To keep hearts afloat

to tie countless hands

No choice when you tread

on seventeen graves

This tightrope, this thread

your mind learns to dance

Notes:

Versions with punctuation:

You’re trapped in a show.
You thoroughly know
these fates that ensnare.
Your orders declare

you have to cut throats
to keep hearts afloat.
No choice when you tread
this tightrope, this thread.

You have created
the spindle that spins
these fates that aren’t fated.
You sever the strings,

And use what you save
to tie countless hands.
On seventeen graves,
Your mind learns to dance.

You’re trapped in a show you have created.
You thoroughly know the spindle that spins
these fates that ensnare; these fates that aren’t fated —
Your orders declare you sever the strings.

You have to cut throats, and use what you save,
To keep hearts afloat; to tie countless hands.
‘No choice when you tread on seventeen graves’:
This tightrope, this thread, your mind learns to dance.

Thank you for reading! And if you enjoyed, lend me your luck so this defence succeeds-
