Work Text:
It’s been exactly a year since Wonderlands x Showtime has come together as a group, since Tsukasa, Emu and Nene did their best to convince Rui to come back to them, and since Tsukasa has started catching feelings for Rui.
It started when the two of them first met on the rooftop of Kamiyama Highschool. Tsukasa had been searching for the guy the entire day with no luck when he finally went up to the last place he could think of, the rooftop.
Usually only couples or weirdos would go up there, which is precisely why Tsukasa avoids that place usually, but since he was out of options, he decided to give it a shot.
And wouldn’t you know, Rui was actually waiting for him up there. Apparently he had been following Tsukasa around all day with a drone he made himself, which is actually kind of creepy now that he is thinking back on it, but it’s such a Rui thing to do that Tsukasa can’t help but look back on it with fondness instead of being weirded out as he probably should be.
They became quick friends from there, even though they are basically polar opposites.
They’re both extremely eccentric but in very different ways.
Tsukasa is a super loud and obnoxious person, always screaming his lungs out and making sure everyone notices him whenever he walks into a room. You might think of him as a narcissist, but he is actually incredibly humble and not as confident as one might assume he is based on first impressions, always putting the needs of his loved ones first, resulting in neglecting his own health, and constantly doubting his own abilities, which is exactly why he puts on the front of someone that is extremely confident and over-the-top.
Rui on the other hand is a rather quiet person and doesn’t really have that many friends, but he is even weirder than Tsukasa, constantly coming up with the most insane and dangerous ideas for their shows, always building something new, be it robots or stage props, and constantly teasing his friends.
In short, everything was going great, Rui even introduced a 4th member to join their little theatre group who also seemed like a nice person, that was until they had their first show together.
It went terribly wrong and ended in a horrible argument between Tsukasa and Rui, which the blonde still regrets to this day. But hey, they even managed to come back from that, and ever since it’s been nothing but great memories shared between the two boys, and Tsukasa had been falling harder and harder every day that he spent with his director.
People at school had even given the two of them the nickname ‘Weirdo Wombo Combo’ after they kept blowing stuff up and causing trouble, much to Tsukasa’s dismay since Rui was always the one instigating these situations.
It also didn’t help when Rui had started calling him “My Star” instead of his usual “Our Star”. Every time he used that nickname Tsukasa could swear that his heart would actually just give out from how fast it would start beating, but thankfully he has somehow gotten used to it and survived to this day.
But right now he finds himself in a predicament.
He has been wanting to confess to Rui for a while now, but he finds himself backing out and being too nervous to actually confess every single time he tries. He must look insane at this point with how many times he has already pulled Rui aside to tell him something important just to end up thinking of some excuse or lying and saying that it wasn’t anything important after all.
So he made up his mind to properly confess his feelings today, he’s a world future star after all! Something like this shouldn’t be so hard for him, right?
Wrong. It is incredibly difficult to actually share your feelings when you have been keeping them to yourself and thinking they weren’t worth sharing all your life.
In other terms, Tsukasa is extremely emotionally constipated, which really wasn’t helping his situation right now.
He had everything planned for this very special day, he just had to invite Rui now, which was so much harder than he thought it would be.
Why is he struggling so much to send a simple text message? It’s just Rui, not some life changing audition, it shouldn’t be this hard! Yet his finger kept hovering over the send button for nearly 15 minutes before he finally found enough resolve to press it, immediately turning his phone screen down as to not see the message.
To his surprise, Rui replied immediately, which is extremely unusual for the other boy since he is constantly working on some robots and machines and barely ever looks at his phone.
It is quite frankly worrying how much time Rui spends working on new props and ideas for their shows, so Tsukasa is happy that he seems to not be working right now, he deserves to take a rest sometimes. Not only that, but they’ll be spending the whole day together so Tsukasa can make sure he doesn’t overwork himself while they’re together.
Now that they had made their plans and agreed on when and where to meet up, Tsukasa was growing more nervous by the second, and the fact that his room only has 3 walls and everyone can see him stressing out certainly did not help.
At least he was home alone, but that was short-lived as his sister came back in that exact moment.
“Brother, I’m back!” She called cheerfully while entering the house, which was the opposite of how Tsukasa was feeling at that moment.
Nonetheless, he tried sounding cheerful when he called back “Saki! Did you have fun with your band?” He could already hear the girl coming up the stairs to his room, it was basically routine for the two of them to always talk for a bit after either of them came back from a hangout.
“Yes, we learned a new song today! It was so much fun and the song is so amazing and not even hard to play!”
Saki had now entered her brother's room just to be greeted by clothes laying everywhere on his bed and even on the floor, which immediately caused concern to rise in her chest.
“What’s going on here? It looks like someone robbed your wardrobe just to leave everything here anyways”
That statement got a little chuckle out of Tsukasa who had honestly just been extremely stressed and nervous for the past 30 minutes by now, which he thanked his sister for internally.
“Well… it’s kind of embarrassing to admit, but I frankly just have no idea what to wear!”
He was posing dramatically to emphasise the severity of his predicament which just made Saki burst out laughing. Tsukasa always loves making his sister happy as her laughter is the greatest joy to him as a big brother and he’d do anything to protect her precious smile, but right now he really needed her help.
“Are you going on a date or something? Wait wait! Can I guess who it is? It’s Rui, right? It has to be! Right, right?”
Tsukasa immediately felt his cheeks burning up and hid his face in his hands out of embarrassment. Was he really that obvious about his massive crush on the purple haired boy?
His sister just clapped excitedly at his gesture and was smiling so brightly that he was scared she would rip open her cheeks “I take that as a yes! It was seriously about time you guys finally started dating, you practically have hearts in your eyes every time you look at each other!”
Tsukasa only replied with a strangled noise, absolutely mortified, which only further fed his sisters delusions. Eventually he spoke up to stop her rambling before he actually just evaporated.
“It’s not a date, Saki. But… I was actually planning to confess to him today, which is why I want to look nice…”
The next thing he felt were arms around his shoulders as his sister lunged at him, jumping up and down in excitement.
“I’ll help you get dressed, it’ll be so much fun!”
And just like that, their endeavour to find the perfect outfit for this occasion began.
——————
Safe to say, Tsukasa was exhausted. His sister is relentless when it comes to fashion, she has basically been treating him like a mannequin for nearly an hour he felt like, before finally settling on an outfit.
Even though it had been incredibly tiring, Tsukasa couldn’t deny that he looked amazing. The clothes Saki had picked out for him perfectly complemented his hair and skin and made him look incredibly handsome.
So now that he was finally dressed, there was just one more thing he had to do, and that was to actually make his way over to Rui’s house to pick him up.
Their plan was to walk to Phoenix Wonderland together to spend the day at the theme park and then end it off at the Wonder Stage, for the sake of nostalgia. It was Wonderlands x Showtimes one year anniversary after all, so it felt very fitting to end the day like that.
Even if he had everything perfectly planned out, Tsukasa still couldn’t help but feel nervous.
He was going to confess to Rui today, but he had never even considered the possibility of Rui not liking him back. What would he do then? He doesn't want to stop being friends with the boy even if that’s the case, but would Rui still want to be his friend?
For now, he can’t do anything but bury those thoughts and make his way over to Rui’s house.
No matter what happens at the end of this day, at least he gets to spend it with one of his favorite people, right?
—————
Tsukasa was now standing in front of Rui’s house, nervously hovering over the doorbell, when the door suddenly opened to reveal Rui standing there, smirking like usual.
“Oh, Rui! I was just going to ring the doorbell, what a coincidence!”
Tsukasa tried to play off the fact that he had been standing in front of the door for nearly 5 minutes with a laugh which just ended up sounding incredibly awkward. Seriously, it’s just Rui, there’s no reason to be this nervous! And besides, it’s not like they’re even going on a date or anything. Well, Tsukasa wishes this was a date, but they’ll have plenty of opportunities to go on dates once they’re boyfriends, if everything goes well.
“Hehe, I’m sure you were. Well then, let’s get going, shall we?~”
“Yes, let’s go! We have so much fun stuff to do after all!”
They started walking towards Phoenix Wonderland, which was actually really close to Rui’s house.
They spent the walk in a comfortable silence, until Rui started speaking again.
“There’s actually something I wanted to do later once we’re at the Wonder Stage, if that’s fine with you, my star”
"Oh! Of course, what is it that you want to do?”
Rui chuckled mischievously, which immediately set off Tsukasa’s alarm, since that usually isn’t a good sign, but he decided to trust his director to not have planned anything dangerous this one time.
“Well, that’s a surprise~ you’re gonna find out later!”
Now that was worrying. What could he possibly have planned? In Rui’s case, surprises usually involved explosions of some sorts, which Tsukasa really hoped wasn’t the case today.
He shakes of that thought and answers by revealing his own surprise for when they’re at the Wonder Stage later that day instead “Uhm, I actually have something I wanted to tell you later as well, once we’re at the Wonder Stage, it’s also a surprise, so don’t even try asking me now!”
That made the purple haired boy smile, locking their arms together before speaking again.
“I’ll be looking forward to that, my dear Tsukasa”
—————
Safe to say, the two boys were having a blast.
Despite pretty much being at Phoenix Wonderland every day, they had actually never tried out the rides, since they were always busy practicing for or preparing their shows.
They tried everything, all the roller coasters (much to Tsukasa’s horror, who refused to admit he was scared of heights), all the different shooting booths and even the ferris wheel.
As much fun as they were having, they were also exhausted as it was getting pretty late, the sky already starting to turn dark.
“It’s already starting to get dark, why don’t we head over to the Wonder Stage now, Rui?” Tsukasa was the first to suggest ending their fun day at the amusement park, to which the director agreed and they made their way over to the familiar stage.
Once they arrived, Rui was the first to break the silence.
“Since we both have surprises for each other, would you like to tell me yours first, or would you like me to start?” Asked the purple haired boy, still smiling his mischievous grin but actually seeming a little nervous now.
Tsukasa, as the curious person he was, obviously wanted to know what Rui’s surprise was first, and he was also not mentally ready to confess right now anyway so it would be a great distraction.
“I’ve been wondering about your surprise all day, so I’d like you to go first, if that’s ok!” Which was the truth, the world future star had been stressing about what Rui could possibly have prepared all day and he was dying to finally know, also feeling a bit nervous about all the possibilities.
Though he could’ve never guessed what the surprise would be.
“That’s fine with me~. I’d like you to close your eyes for a second, my star, I have to set it up first.”
Now Tsukasa was actually very excited to see it, eagerly closing his eyes and hiding them behind his hands.
He heard Rui shuffling around for a while, presumably setting up his surprise, until he was done and started leading Tsukasa up on the stage, still holding his eyes closed, with his own hands over the star’s which were still over his eyes.
Once they were standing on the stage, the director removed his hands and nudged Tsukasa to open his eyes.
What greeted him was a huge speaker and a nice starry sky backdrop on the stage. Did Rui design that himself?
“Woah, did you make this yourself? It’s so pretty!” He asked just that, completely in awe at his best friend's talent that keeps blowing him away every day.
“Fufu, I did! It took some time, but I really wanted to make a backdrop like this for one of our shows anyways, and I figured, why not use it for this special occasion?”
Rui was really perfect, Tsukasa thought.
“And what’s the speaker for?” At that question, the taller boy actually blushed a bit and started fidgeting nervously, much to Tsukasa’s surprise.
“Well, there’s this song that really means a lot to me, and I was hoping we could dance to it together, if I could have the honor”
Now it was Tsukasa’s turn to blush like crazy, because seriously, Rui just invited him to a dance! And more than that, to a song that has a personal meaning for the other boy! Tsukasa couldn’t help but feel extremely flattered and overjoyed, eagerly nodding at Rui’s invitation.
“I would love to, Rui! I can’t promise I’ll be great, but I’ll try my best!” Tsukasa’s obnoxiousness seemed to calm the other boy's nerves a bit as he laughed softly, his signature grin returning to his face.
“Alright then, would you allow me this dance, my star?~” Rui dramatically extended his hand towards Tsukasa in a half bow, fully playing his part as a theatre kid, which Tsukasa eagerly reciprocated, taking his director's cold hand in his own warm one with a dramatic exclamation.
“Of course, my dear director!”
Then Rui started the song, a soft melody started playing from the speakers, while placing his other hand that wasn’t holding Tsukasa’s on the boy's hip, gesturing to Tsukasa to place his other hand on his shoulder.
They were so close and Tsukasa could feel his heart pounding in his chest. He could only hope and pray that Rui wasn’t able to hear it, or he might die of embarrassment.
As the song kept playing, Tsukasa found himself relaxing under his director's touch, enjoying the music and swaying along with the taller boy.
Just as he was about to break the silence to ask the name of this song, Rui beat him to it as he started talking in a quiet and gentle voice, so as to not disturb the peaceful atmosphere.
“This is a song my parents used to dance to all the time, it’s called honeymoon un • deux • trois” he took a short breath before continuing his explanation, the lyrics already starting to resound on the quiet stage.
‘The twilight dyes the sky the color of wine,
“The lyrics tell the story of two young and inexperienced people who are deeply in love with one another, invited to the stage by the night sky and clumsily dancing together, even though they have no idea what they’re doing” He looks straight into Tsukasa’s eyes after that sentence, making his heart skip a beat, the aforementioned lyrics resounding right on cue-
And invites us inexperienced two toward the stage-‘
“In the song, the two of them intertwine their fingers while swaying to a sweet melody” as he says that, the director intertwines his cold fingers with Tsukasa’s warm ones, never breaking eye contact, even though his cheeks and neck are extremely red and the Star can feel him trembling a little.
‘We entwine each other’s fingers-
“They dream of a future where they’re happily together”
-And play the dreams of us two’
He keeps going with sweet whispers, explaining the lyrics as they’re playing “They don’t stop dancing for hours, even when dawn begins crashing on them”
‘The moonlight illuminates the alley with a gold color-
“They dance and stumble to the music, lost in each other's calming presence” He keeps on whispering, as Tsukasa accidentally steps on his foot, as if on cue, which earns him a soft chuckle from the taller boy.
-And us young two dance while stumbling’
“The song ends with the two of them kissing and confessing their undying love to one another” Just as Rui was saying that sentence, the lyrics could be heard from the speaker.
‘I put my lips on those of yours- ‘
The two of them stopped dancing and just looked into each other's eyes, slowly starting to close the gap while the song kept playing.
‘Singing, swinging, sweetest song’
Their foreheads now bumped into each other, while they took deep breaths, basking in each other's presence and in the feeling of having their loved one so close.
‘- And play the love of us two’
As those final lyrics of the songs sounded out, leaving only the soft melody that kept playing, their lips finally met in a tender touch. Tsukasa moved both of his hands to Rui’s neck, while the director held his star's hips gently.
It was a very soft and hesitant kiss, but neither of them wanted the moment to end, basking in the feeling of each other's lips and closeness.
As they kept kissing, Tsukasa was clutching his director's shoulders desperately, trying to hold back the happy tears that were threatening to escape his eyes.
Rui, of course, noticed this and started slowly separating their lips, still keeping their foreheads pressed together, not wanting to be too far apart either.
As they looked into each other's eyes, Rui was the first to break the silence, while bringing up a hand to wipe his star’s tears that had unconsciously started falling.
“I love you, my star”
Five simple words, yet they completely overwhelmed the blonde’s heart and only made him cry harder, now hugging Rui instead, wanting to be as close as possible.
“I love you too, Rui, so so much” He managed to get out between sniffles, only clutching the taller boys back harder, trying to ground himself, to feel that this was actually happening, that it wasn’t just another dream.
“I was actually going to confess to you today, that was my surprise, but it looks like you beat me to it” Tsukasa pulled back a little and when he looked at Rui again, with the brightest smile and happy tears still clinging to the corners of his eyes, the director couldn’t help himself but kiss the other boy again.
It was with much more confidence this time, catching Tsukasa by surprise, though he quickly melted into the kiss again, wanting to feel his director's warmth even more.
The kiss was short-lived though, with Rui breaking it first, pulling back a little to properly look at the boy in front of him again before dramatically getting down on one knee while still holding his hands.
“My dear star, would you do me the honor of being my boyfriend?” He exclaimed dramatically, which earned him a loud and obnoxious laugh from the other boy, who returned his eccentric gestures, striking an over the top pose and speaking in a loud and obnoxious voice that was usually reserved for their shows.
“Oh, my dear director! Of course I want to be your boyfriend, I would even marry you on the spot if I could!”
Now both of them were laughing loudly, just enjoying each other's presence while the song has long since finished playing, leaving behind nothing but the quiet of the night and the now fading laughter of the two idiots that finally managed to confess to each other after months of yearning for this very moment.
They turned the song back on, sitting down in the audience seats, leaning on each other and just enjoying the moment.
Tsukasa was starting to fall asleep as his boyfriend kept stroking his hair softly, humming along to the song, and in that moment he thought that he had never been happier in his life, wishing for this night to never end.
Rui felt the same way, hoping that they could create their own memories to the song that had once united his parents, to be able to listen to it many years from now and remember this very night.
