Timeline playtime

Summary:

Abaddon had relived the beggining of the world countless of times and the way it happened always stayed the same with only some minimal deviations
Untill one timeline suprises him completely

Or

Katherine comes to the hotel much earlier when she was supposed to
Abaddon decides to have some fun with an already odd timeline

Notes:

I had an idea and had to get it out of my system

Chapter Text

Abaddon has lived through the begging of time so many times that he'd lost count

It was torture and not the good kind that he loved so much

Having to live through the entire history of earth was tiring and seeing Nathan die over and over again and not being able to do anything about it was exhausting

Nathan's spiral started long before he met Abaddon

Every time the date of Nathan's death changed, sometimes it was the beginning of August sometimes it was the end, sometimes a completely different month

Abaddon never knew when that fateful day will happen so every time a few months pass since their first meeting he starts living on edge, preparing himself to find the humans cold, unmoving body either on the ground or on his chair

The method never changed so that was a comfort at least

Abaddon has seen a lot of dead bodies in his long lifetime but Nathan's? He didn't like seeing it, hated it even

No matter how many times he's seen it he's never ready for the day

And the few days of loneliness as Nathan's ghost was forming he usually spent hiding in the vents

But as much as he wished he could stop Nathan, change his mind somehow or just hide every single pill bottle that's in the hotel he simply can't

Nathan's suicide is a kick starter

Nathan kills himself, Katherine, Esther and Ben move into the hotel, they live there for a year and then the acolytes come

He still haven't figured out how to make it past the acolytes but he'll get there, eventually

In the recent timelines he's repeated he started trying new things, mortals of the 21st century have some interesting creations

He'd recently got a liking of these so called "board games" especially the one that Nathan had called "chess"

None of them knew how to play it though but they learned together, it was fun

The current timeline he was in was the also the one he finally decided to try the clothes that Nathan had bought him in every other time line but never wore them

Just one day to see how it feels like

That's why now Abaddon was dressed in a light green shirt that was just a bit too big for him, black loose shorts and gray socks, no shoes

His regular clothes were neatly stuffed into a vent in Nathan's room

The clothes were comfortable enough, didn't restrict any of his movements which was nice, they still didn't feel as good as feeling the hell fires lick his skin as he sended a yet another dammed soul for eternal torture but they will do

So now Abaddon, in his fresh new clothes was sitting under the desk at the reception and just drawing, he wasn't drawing anything specific, just some animals but he knows that Nathan will proudly display it on the fridge like he always did, he didn't understand why Nathan bothered with doing that

As he sat there engulfed by the shadow he heard the front door open, seems like it's one of those rare days where the hotel actually gets a customer, he should probably go get Nathan to handle that he didn't feel like interacting with any mortals let alone the annoying customers who are always complaining and very much deserve the hottest pit of hell to burn for all-

"Nathan?" Abaddon recognized that voice

But that was impossible she shouldn't be at the hotel for at least another few months

That's how it always goes, Nathan dies first and only then Katherine comes to Undervale, never earlier

Abaddon peaked out from behind the desk and there she was

Katherine Freeling in all her glory, standing in the hall of the hotel she definitely shouldn't be in, at least not yet, but there she was

Disobeying the previous time lines for some unknown to the demon reason

That was bad, really bad. She was not supposed to be there why is she in the hotel? And where was Ben and Esther did she leave them with her husband? Her parents? Was she alone?

Will her breaking pattern somehow affect Abaddons ability to save them from certain doom and regaining his powers?

Well, maybe Abaddon could have some fun with the current odd situation, the time line has already broken what's a little more chaos gonna do

Abaddon smirked and hopped onto the chair, startling Katherine

"Welcome to the Undervale hotel what do you want?" He asked in a bored voice, he was standing on the chair therefore he towered over Katherine, meaning the mortal had to look up to look him in the eyes, that felt nice

"Oh uh hello there little boy" well that was an awkward welcome

"Abaddon" the demon corrected her, she didn't know him yet, she didn't know who he was and what could he do

"Right Abaddon, are you even supposed to be here?" She pointed at the reception desk and the demon just shrugged, Nathan never said anything against him being by the reception desk, and even if he did Abaddon would still be by it. No mortal will dictate him where he can and cannot go

"Alright" Katherine said slowly "do you know where I could find Nathan Freeling?"

Ah makes sense she was looking for her brother

"Yeah he's outside" working on that hedge he will never finish

"Great great uh do you know when-" that's when Nathan decided to stride into the hotel grumbling something about annoying plants

He immediately lightened up when he saw his sister

"Katherine! What are you doing here it's so good to see you" he threw his hands into the air and trotted over to trap Katherine in a bone crushing hug

"It's good to see you too Nathan" Katherine laughed when the man finally let her go "I gotta say this place looks really nice"

"Ah you know how it is gotta keep it fresh for the customers"

"You get customers? No offense but Undervale isn't exactly a tourist attraction"

"I do actually, it's mostly people who got lost or just need a place to stay for the night" Nathan explained

"That's great, I do have a question tho" she turned back around to point at Abaddon who was still standing on the chair "who is that?"

"Ah I see you met Abaddon" The human smiled brightly and walked over to the demon "were you ok here all by yourself?"

"Of course I was I can handle myself" Abaddon hopped down the chair "I'm gonna go eat some yogurt"

"We're out"

"Agh" stupid human always forgetting his delicacies "do we at least still have froot loops?"

"Yeah we still have a box" Nathan nodded

"Then I'll just eat that" and with that he left to go to the kitchen

When he closed the door he heard Katherine and Nathan talking about something he didn't hear

He didn't really care about what they were taking about if he was going to be honest, he just wanted his froot loops

That wretched vessel of his was so small he had no other choice but to humiliate himself with climbing the counters just to get to the cupboards

He pulled himself onto the counter and slowly stood up on it, he opened the cupboard and took out the box of cereal, closed the door and slipped back onto the ground

Getting milk was much easier since Nathan always left it on the bottom of the door of the fridge

Abaddon got the milk, and climbed onto the chair, kneeling on it

He then first poured the cereal into the bowl and them milk

It was explained to Abaddon that for some reason humans have very heated debates over which one goes first

Abaddon personally could not be bothered to care which goes first

After finishing the first bowl and getting started on the second Nathan slowly walked into the kitchen

"Hey bud, I have some news" well that was a good start "I told you about my sister and her kids right?"

"You did, a lot, with painful details" the demon deadpanned, the amount of times he had listened to Nathan going on and on about the three was just ridiculous

"Alright so, Katherine is getting a divorce and her soon-to-be ex husband kinda kicked them out of the house"

Another change from all the other time lines, usually it would be Katherine's ex (that he never bothered learning the name of) moving out of their house and the Katherine, Esther and Ben living there until Nathan's death

"And?", Abaddon shoved a spoonful of froot loops into his month

"And all three of them will be living at the hotel for the time being, until Katherine gets on her feet" the length that Nathan will go for his younger sister is impressive

"Alright, where are the kids now anyways?" That was bothering him

"Oh Ben and Esther are with our mom now" ah that makes sense, Katherine isn't the type to leave her kids alone in the car somewhere

Abaddon did get trapped in a car that one time, cursed child safety locks

"When will they be here?" He asked calmly

"This evening, they will be staying in some of the spare rooms"

"Alright"

"You're really fine with it" ah, of course Nathan wanted to make sure considering the fact that in his mind it will be the first time Abaddon will be around other (alive) people for an extended period of time

"Why wouldn't I be, they're your family right? Family helps family" was quoting Nathan back playing with his emotions? Maybe

"Alright that's great" then he left, probably to inform Katherine that she could stay

This timeline just keeps getting more and more interesting

Chapter Text

Katherine was in deep shit, she was just completely utterly fucked

Ron was divorcing her, that was fine people divorce all the time

But he kicked her and their kids out of the house

Who does that?

Thankfully her mom agreed to keep the kids at her place for a while as Katherine tries to find a place to stay

Maybe she could find some cheep one room apartment, she's that Ben and Esther wouldn't mind sharing and she could survive on the couch

But as she thought one specific person kept making his way into her brain

Nathan, her older brother

From what she heard he's running a hotel in some town called Undervale

She hasn't seen him in years

It felt awkward to just stride and ask him if her Esther and Ben could live in his hotel, at least until she gets on her feet

But she knew that Nathan will help her, he's that type of a person that puts others above himself

It will be the death of him one day

She debated with herself for half a day if she should go

But desperation won

She told her kids that she was going to visit someone and to be good for their grandma

And that's how she found herself parking her car in front of Hotel Undervale after an hour long ride

The place looked nice she couldn't say that it didn't, the building was surrounded by a large plot of land that was covered in trees and the area right by the hotel looked well kept

Nathan was doing a pretty good job at making the hotel looked presentable at least from the outside

She pushed the door open and took a look inside

The hall looked really nice, warm colors and wooden floors really worked well together

Nathan really did take care of the place, Katherine did wonder if Nathan got any customers

Speaking of Nathan

"Nathan?" Where was he? He should be nearby the reception, it was early afternoon there must be some people coming by

Katherine gained no response, where was he?

"Hello welcome to Undervale hotel what do you want" Katherine jumped in place when she heard a voice suddenly speak up

She looked at the reception desk and saw a young boy, around 7 years old dressed in a green shirt and black short standing on a chair behind the desk

Did

Did Nathan have a son?

Did Nathan have a child and didn't tell her?

Maybe her relationship with him was worse than she thought

The boy didn't look anything like Nathan, but genetics were wierd

Esther looked like her little clone yet she was still Rons daughter

"Oh uh hello there little boy" fuck she was awkward

"Abaddon" the boy introduced himself, that was a rather odd name but who was she to judge

"Right, Abaddon are you even supposed to be here?" She did wonder if the boy was supposed to be behind the reception and standing on the chair, but Abaddon just shrugged "alright. Do you know where I could find Nathan Freeling?"

Why was she asking him it like that? She could've just asked where his dad was

"Yeah he's outside" Abaddon answered casually

"Great great uh do you know when-" that's when the doors to the hotel swung open and Nathan walked in grumbling something about plants

He noticed Katherine and his face immediately lit up

"Katherine! What are you doing here it's so good to see you" Nathan threw his hands up and quickly went over to her, embracing her in a tight hug

Some things never change do they

"It's good to see you too Nathan" she laughed as Nathan let her go "I gotta say this place looks nice"

It really did have some class

"Ah you know how it its gotta keep it fresh for the costumers"

"You get customers? No offense but Undervale isn't exactly a tourist attraction" fuck why did she say that?

"I do actually, it's mostly people who got lost or just need a place to stay for the night" that was good actually, her brother was finally creating his own little career

"That's great, I do have a question tho" she turned around and pointed at the boy who was still standing at the chair "who is that?"

She already knew an answer to that question, at least she thought she did but she wanted to hear it from Nathan himself

"Ah I see you met Abaddon" Nathan walked over to the boy "were you ok all by yourself here?"

"Of course I was I can handle myself" Abaddon huffed and hopped down the chair, he reminded Katherine a bit of Esther, similar attitude "I'm gonna go eat some yogurt"

"We're out"

"Agh" wow, he must really like yogurt if a shortage of it caused that reaction "do we at least have froot loops?"

"Yeah we still have a box" Nathan nodded

Then I'll just eat that" Abaddon left to the kitchen and when he was out of sight Katherine immediately went up to her brother

"Nathan who the hell is this kid? And how old is he seven?"

Nathan flinched getting caught off guard

"That's Abaddon I assumed he had already introduced himself, and he's my-"

"No no I already know, and yes he did introduce himself. But Nathan a child? That's a whole lot of responsibility that's not something to take so lightly it's a lot of work that will go for years and-"

"Kathy I know that!" Nathan raised his voice "I know that a kid is a lot of responsibility I've had Abaddon for a while now I know what I'm saying"

Katherine pinched the bridge of her nose "right I'm sorry I didn't mean to undermine you it's just. Seven years Nathan, I didn't even know he existed"

Nathan's shoulders slumped "Kathy we haven't really talked since Esther was little, the calls and visits stopped and I just, felt ashamed"

Of course, Nathans heart far too big for his own good

Katherine wrapped her arms around Nathan, her brother hugged back shortly after

They let go of each other a few moments later

"I'm sorry I didn't call. I got so focused on trying to fix a marriage set for failure that I guess I just, forgot about the people who have been with me since the beginning"

"It's alright Katherine" Nathan smiled in that soft smile of his that always made Katherine believe that everything will be alright "speaking of your marriage why are you here? And where are the kids? Are they with Ron?"

"That's actually why I'm here, Ron and I are getting a divorce and he kicked me out of the house"

Nathan's face went from shock to anger in about 3 seconds

"He kicked you out? With Ben and Esther too?" Katherine nodded "what is wrong with oh he better be ready when I get there I'm gonna beat his ass so badly that he'll-"

"No no no Nathan I don't want you to beat up Ron in my honor"

"But that's what you deserve Katherine"

"Thank you but no I just need a place to stay with the kids and I was wondering if I could-"

"If you could stay at my hotel?" Nathan's eyes softened ans Katherine nodded "of course you can, I would never turn you away"

"Thank you Nathan"

"It's nothing really, when will the kids be here?"

"I mean they're staying with mom now but I can get them here in the evening"

"Yeah that's completely fine, but I need to talk about it with Abaddon"

"Oh yeah no of course it's his home too" there was silence for a few seconds as Nathan walked over to the kitchen door "alright but, Abaddon?"

"He came pre named alright?" Nathan defended himself and walked into the kitchen

Katherine was left alone with her thoughts

How did Abaddon even, happen?

Nathan wasn't the type to sleep around, he never was

But things happen, and people change

Maybe Nathan went on some party got drunk and forgot about protection?

Maybe it was a one night stand gone wrong?

He did say that Abaddon came pre named so he must have not known about his mother being pregnant

She regretted not being in Nathan's life the past few years as much as she should have

As Katherine thought she looked under the reception desk

She saw crayons and a bunch of drawings, that must be where Abaddon has been hiding before he popped up on her

Soon enough Nathan left the kitchen and walked back up to his sister

"He's fine with it"

"Are you sure?"

"Yes I'm sure, he's completely fine with you Ben and Esther living here"

"We won't be here long I promise, I just need to get on my feet"

"Katherine you and the kids can stay for as long as you need, I missed having you around you know"

Katherine smiled "I missed having you around too"

They stood there for a few moments before eventually Katherine sighed

"Alright I gotta go and get the kids, it's an hour long drive. Luckily we still haven't unpacked from the car"

"Oh yeah no of course take your time"

"Thanks again Nathan"

"Oh I do have to warn you, Abaddon is not the best with meeting new people so he might be a bit skittish at the beginning"

"Oh no that's completely fine"

"Great, just warning you"

Katherine laughed and smiled at her brother as she walked towards the door

Nathan smiled back

Almost 2 hours later Katherine was packing her kids into the car

"Alright" she huffed as she sat back down on the drivers seat "I told you about your uncle Nathan right?"

"Yes"

"Yup"

"Great, because we're going to be staying with him for a little while"

"Because dad kicked us out?"

"Yes Ben because dad kicked us out" her boy was much too perceptive sometimes "also, he has a son, Abaddon"

"Abaddon?" Esther perked up "oh that's such a cool name! Mom why didn't you name me something cool as that, something like Lilith. Hey Ben do I look like a Lilith?"

"I don't know you look like Esther to me"

"Esther be glad that you got the name you have because it was between that and Barbara"

"Barbara?" Esther said appalled "yeah I'm good with Esther"

"Alright, your cousin" god that felt wierd to say "is younger than both of you he's seven years old. We're going to be living in their home so I expect both of you to be on your best behavior, especially you Esther"

Esther opened her mouth in astonishment "you wound me mother, to suggest that I, Esther Freeling cannot behave? Shame on you dearest mother" her daughter said dramatically gaining a slight side eye from Ben

"Esther, I mean it, none of your occult things while we're there. I don't think Abaddon even goes to school just yet" she whispered the last part to herself

Esther put her right hand on her chest and lifted the right one "mom I promise I will not do any of my dark magic and occult things while we're living with uncle Nathan"

"Alright that's great"

"Great speech"

"Thank you dear brother"

Katherine sighed and started the car.

Moving to Undervale will be the beginning of something new

She will have to drive back to her kids old school and transfer them to a school in Undervale

God so many things to do so many things going wrong

She hoped that Nathan wouldn't change his mind about them staying at his hotel (she knows he won't), she hoped to find a stable job sooner rather than later, she hoped that Abaddon will get along with her kids

Katherine stepped on the gas pedal and drove off her moms driveway onto the street

A start of a new chapter in their life starts now

Notes:

No hate to any Barbaras reading this fic

Did I add in there a little headcanon of mine about Esther being Katherine's little clone regarding apperance? Yes

Also did I completely make up all the lore between Katherine and Nathan pre hotel? Also yes

Chapter 3

Notes:

Not my greatest work but i'm a bit hungover rn so whatever

Chapter Text

"alright Abaddon I just got a call from Katherine, she's going to be here soon" Nathan walked up to Abaddon who was trying to climb onto the cabinets "so please be on your best behavior"

"Oh please when have I ever not been on my best behavior"

"Yesterday when you brought in a dead half eaten raccoon into the living room"

"Oh, that"

"Yeah that, no more of that"

"How dare you command Abaddon the prince of the black realm, the gatekeeper of hell!" The demon yelled offended, how dare he

"Ok, so I'm asking you to be as calm as you can be when Katherine and the kids get here, at least for the first few weeks so they can get used to everything. Can you do that?"

"Hmm I accept your deal" Abaddon hopped down onto the floor "when will your sister be here exactly?"

"In about fifteen minutes, I really need to prepare some rooms for her and the kids" Nathan was silent for a moment "speaking of rooms go clean yours"

"What? I don't have a- oh yeah right" he did have a room, Nathan gave it to him when he first started living with him, he just barely spend any time there spending the days wandering the hotel and the area around it and the nights in a cabinet under the sink. The room was probably really dusty now "but why do I have to clean it?"

"Because I don't have the energy to explain to Katherine on why are you sleeping under the sink" Nathan crossed his arms over his chest

"I don't sleep" Abaddon interjected

"Yeah ok whatever go clean the room"

"You do not posses the power of making me do anything I do not wish to do"

"Go clean or no yogurt for a week"

Abaddon gasped "how dare you!" Nathan was a cruel man, withholding Abaddons delicacies to force him to do his bidding. Abaddon respected that "fine"

The demon turned around to leave to kitchen and make his way into his assigned room when a wet rag hit him in the head

Abaddon turned around enraged only to see Nathan standing there with that annoying on his face

The demon grumbled to himself as he walked out of the kitchen taking the rag into his hand

Abaddon opened the door to the room he hasn't stepped a foot in in months and was immediately hit with a stale smell of the dust

He was right about the room getting dusty

He really should open a window

He walked up to the window on the other side of the room, he grabbed the knob of the window and twisted it pulling it at the same time

Abaddon didn't exactly know how to open a window but that always does the job

After a few tries the window opens letting a gust of fresh air in

Well time to get to work. For his yogurt

As he worked Abaddons thoughts drifted, that timeline was surely an odd one and he really wanted to see how it played out, he never really got to see Katherine and Nathan interact before the mans death

Maybe Nathan will finally survive the few months they always spend together

Abaddon placed the wet cloth on the dresser and wiped it, gathering all the dust, when he was satisfied with the progress be moved to the bedside table, then the wardrobe, then the shelves and finally grabbed the blanket off the bed and shook it as hard as the weak arms of the vessel allowed him, sending all the dust settling there into the air

It actually looked nice now

"Abaddon! Katherine's here!" Nathan called him from the hal of the hotel. Has it already been 15 minutes? Time sure does pass fast when you're cleaning

Abaddon left the now dirty wet rag on the bed and left the room, making his way into the hal

When he got there he saw Ben dragging his suitcase into the building, Esther marveling at the anything in sight and Nathan talking with his sister

He walked up to Nathan's side and a warm hand immediately came to his upper back

"There he is" Nathan smiled brightly at the demon

"Ben, Esther this is your little cousin Abaddon" Katherine introduced the demon, it felt wierd being called a cousin, a familiar term he never got to have. In all other timelines he's just been this wierd demon roommate thing that came with the building

Ben came closer to Abaddon first with that wide toothy grin he always had plastered on his face

"Hello Abaddon it's nice to meet you, my name is-" before Ben could finish his introduction Esther pushed him to the side getting uncomfortably close to Abaddons face

"So you're the one who they call Abaddon" she narrowed her eyes as if she was studying him, and knowing Esther she probably was

"And you're the one they call Esther" the demon mimicked the girl, he liked doing that it always either made her laugh or made her want to strangle him to death. He loved the outcome of both

They stared at each other for a few moments before Esther smiled

"Cool name"

"Thanks, cool coat"

"Thanks"

"Want me to show you around the hotel?"

"Uh duh, of course I want to" Esther bounced in place from excitement, Abaddon turned to look at Ben

"You wanna come with us?"

"Ah no thanks, I think I'll just get something to eat" Ben rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly

"The kitchen is right over there" Nathan pointed at the kitchen door "serve yourself"

Abaddon and Esther were halfway up the staircase

"Most guest rooms are upstairs" Abaddon explained as Esther followed him trough the corridor

"This place is huge" Esther twirled behind him

"It's not that big once you get used to it trust me" Abaddon shrugged and stopped by one of the rooms turning around to face Esther "there is around 40 rooms that we can explore, there is also a wedding suite but I don't really go in there it stinks and- what are you looking at?" Abaddon tilted his head, Esther looked absolutely horrified pointing at something behind him

Abaddon turned around just in time to see a knife approach his forehead in rapid speed

The knife phased right through

"Hi Paul" the demon sighed, Paul was annoying but harmless

"Sup Abaddon, I see you got yourself a little friend" Paul retracted his knife

"Yeah that's Esther, Nathan's niece" the demon explained

"Oh that's nice I forgot that the guy has any siblings to be honest" Paul rubbed his chin with the butt of his knife "anyways I'm gonna go, see ya around"

"Bye Paul" Paul phased through a wall and then dissapeared, Abaddon turned back to Esther

"Anyways as I was saying-"

"What the heck was that?!" Esther was pointing where the ghost has just been

"Oh that was just stabby Paul don't worry about him" he waved his hand dismissively

"His knife just went through you, do you have some sort of a protection spell on you?"

"What? No" protection spells don't work like that "he's a ghost"

"Ghosts are real?" Esther's eyes widened, bright sparkles in them

"Oh yeah, this place is filled with them it's pretty hard not to find a ghost to be honest"

"Oh ho ho that's so cool!" Esther jumped in place throwing her hands into the air "ghosts are real! How does that work"

"Not sure honestly, if you Die on the property of the hotel you become a ghost" he really didn't know much about how ghosts happen

"Can you show me some" the girl once again got really close to his face, this time with a wide grin on her face

"Oh yeah sure no problem"

"This is Candleheads room" Abaddon pointed at the door

"Why Candlehead?" Esther questioned tilting her head

Abaddon just opened the door letting the girl see the inside absolutely filled with candles to the brim with Candlehead standing in the middle

When he noticed them he charged at them

"Candles!" Abaddon quickly shut the door

"Candlehead"

Next they met Angela, she was standing in the living room staring out the window

"Hi Angela" Abaddon and Esther waved at her as they approached her

"Oh, hello Abaddon, who's your pretty little friend here?" Angela smiled

"Awww thank you" Esther smiled and waved her hand at Angela "I'm Esther, my uncle Nathan is the owner of this hotel"

"Oh you're his niece that's so nice, we all Heard so much about you and your brother, and your mom"

"Really? Does uncle Nathan talk about us a lot?"

"Yes he does" Abaddon nodded "so much"

As they walked past a door to an open room the noticed the tentacle monster who immediately shut the door upon noticing them

"Another ghost?" Esther asked

"No that's just Jessica"

"Alright but what exactly is Jessica?"

"No clue honestly"

They rotated through a few more rooms, meeting other ghosts like the cowboy who got shot in the head or that girl in a blue flapper dress before eventually going back downstairs and joining the others in the kitchen

"Did you two have fun?" Katherine asked with a soft smile

"Heck yeah it was awesome"

"I showed Esther a guest room with a giant spider" Abaddon said proudly, the spider was around the size of his head, truly an impressive feat

"It was gigantic"

"Wait Abaddon there's a giant spider in one of the guest rooms?" Nathan asked the demon, Abaddon nodded in response "Why didn't you tell me?"

"I like spiders" the demon shrugged

"Well most guests don't like them, so next time you see a spider in a room just tell me alright?"

"Alright" Abaddon said dismissively before sitting down on a chair next to Ben

Esther sat down next to Katherine

Soon enough a plate of spaghetti was placed in front of Abaddon and a fork was put into his hand

He looked around and saw that everybody had a plate in front of them and was already eating with delight faces

The demon stabbed the noddles with the fork and shoved some into his mouth

Maybe he could enjoy this timeline while it lasts
