Chapter 1: Day 1 - The Old

Chapter Text

A negyedik vágányon vonat közlekedik. A vágány mellett kérjük vigyázzanak.

Álmos, an ABmot class diesel railcar, sits abandoned at Kaposvár station. He was supposed to be sold to a museum…. 20–something years ago, when he was „worth restoring”, whatever counts as such. But the years have come and gone, and he’s just there, rusty, paint peeling, the works.

With nothing else to do, he watches as other engines come and go with their trains. Some honk or say hi, but most don’t seem to know he’s even there. He sometimes finds himself wishing he was noticed more.

Joyful squeals cut through the silence. „MD! Ott az MD!” MD. There isn’t much the old railcar hates more than those two letters. Soon enough, he too sees the fabled engine: MDamot 3017, Múzsa as she’s more often known, pulls her herbicide train through the station. How lucky she is to be on track 4. If she were any closer, or said so much as a peep in his direction, he’d be sure to give her a piece of his mind…

But she moves on without a word, the joy of those passengers and passersby going along with her. The less she's there, the better chance he has at being seen. Well, he would, if it weren't for that 376 at the other end of the building. For some reason, people actually bother to go up to him. He can hear kids yelling from all the way over here. And that 376 is loving it by the sounds of it, telling stories and boasting and all that, just like back in their day.

If only Álmos got to be in service instead of whichever sibling of his... Oh how he'd love the faces of those clueless people, that 376, that MDamot, all those "retro" engines he saw enter service all those decades ago. Why is it always the ones in service that get the attention? Bzmot 001, M41 2143, M62 011, V43.1001, 424.009, 424.247, the list goes on. Why do they get to be in service and loved like this? Is he really worth so little it's better to just let him rot? Maybe he'll get someone's attention when he finally collapses from the rust...
