Work Text:
N’s love language was gift-giving.
You’d think that be obvious from the amount of boxes filled with stuff he made, bought and spent hours on over the years back at his parent’s house.
so when His and Uzi’s 1 year anniversary rolled around?
He was ..not prepared at all.
He adores her, would do anything in the world for her..but he can’t think of anything. Not a single gift that would be good enough to even show the amount of love he has for her.
Soo, what do you do?
He went to his sister.
It only took about seven knocks for V to answer, Not even saying hello, she just stared at him, waiting.
“Hey…V. So- like, you know how me and Uzi’s anniversary is coming up? Well- I mean- well uh. I need..help.”
She sighed, then stepped aside.
“Cmon in. Lizzy’s here, she’ll help.”
His face practically lit up, that stupid grin.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
His attempt at giving her a hug was deflected as she walked away to the kitchen.
N awkwardly tucked his arms back at his sides, then turned and closed the door.
He made his way to the kitchen, Where Lizzy was, it wasn’t a surprise to normally see her in there since she was dating his sister.
Lizzy looked up from her phone, first glancing at V, then at him.
“What’s he doing here?”
She set her phone down.
“V said that-..you uh, you’d know a good gift idea for Uzi? Since it’s me and hers one year anniversary and we’re going out for dinner and normally I’d have something planned but today I don’t and-“
She pressed her hand over his mouth.
“Stop rambling, And you’re telling me you have no idea what to get the loser?”
He paused, then nodded.
“Yeah- but she’s not a loser! She’s awesome.”
Lizzy picked up her phone again, typing in something, presumably texting someone.
“..Why don’t you go to Doll? They grew up together. She’d like..know or something.”
“..I uh, didn’t think of that. Thank you Lizzy!”
And with that, he hurried out of their apartment.
-
Uzi had never been much of a gifter.
She barely had any friends over the years, let alone a boyfriend to get a present for.
She’d need something good, not basic like flowers or something.
She stared at the prices of the plush dogs, they were these..collector items or whatever. N had 3, but she hadn’t realised how much he freaking spent on them! she could barely afford rent, how was she supposed to afford this??
“..crap, crap crap.”
she mumbled under her breath. her phone had started ringing.
N.
She pressed answer, holding it up to her ear.
“Hey?”
.
“Hey Uz!! Okay, so, hypothetically, if I went and bought you a pet, what kind of animal would you want?”
She squinted for a second, gears turning in her head.
“..You’re not in a pet store right now, are you?”
“No- no! Of course not. It’s just a hypothetical.”
“..Uh..A rat, I guess. I’ve wanted one for a while. They’re cute.”
“Okay! Great! Love you!”
Her heart fluttered, a small smile appearing on her face.
“..Love you too, idiot.”
The screen went back to her home page, a picture of them two on a date a couple months back.
“..Great-..now where was I?”
-
“do not get her a rat for an anniversary gift, N.”
J’s voice came through the phone, disapproving as ever.
“But she said she wanted one-“ He tried to respond, just to be cut off.
“Don’t get her an animal. Do you think either of you could take care of it?”
“..okay, J. Can you tell Tessa I said Hi?”
“Mhm, sure. Bye.”
She hung up on him.
So, the pet idea was a fail. Probably a bad idea anywhere. He shrugged. Then walked further down the sidewalk, glancing into the stores as he passed.
And then he spotted it.
In the window of a jewellery store, a beautiful silver choker necklace was on display, amethyst and onyx gems decorating the front, almost like a flower on vines.
but then his eyes saw the price tag.
‘£189’.
That was..very expensive. But not out of budget?
But what if she didn’t like it? What if she hated it and hated him and then never wanted to see him again?
However..she could also love it. And be so happy that they’ll have a movie night and she’ll sit and watch all his favourite movies.
That’d be great.
Before he knew it, he was inside the store. Watching the sales person place the necklace into a bag while he tucked away his card.
“Have a nice day.”
He took the bag.
“Thank you! You too!”
Now all he had to do was hide it till their anniversary came around, 3 days.
-
Uzi was having zero luck.
No-one was responding to her freaking texts! Not even Lizzy (who was a last resort.)
What could she even buy for him?
She was gonna be the worst girlfriend ever. Not even able to buy him a gift.
She didn’t even notice that she was about to walk right into a-
Pole.
her phone clattered to the ground. she brought her hand up to her face.
“..ow- shit.”
She felt her face heat up with embarrassment. She quickly bent down and grabbed her phone. Glancing around to look if anyone had seen.
No-one, thank RoboGod.
But back to the task at hand, gift-buying.
She cycled through her memories, trying to think of anything N might want, anything he could’ve mentioned..
and then she found it.
It had been during one of their early sleepovers, only two months into their relationship.
They were both laying on his bed, one of her first times being at his home, normally they’d go to her apartment. The building was quiet. But there was renovations going on so she had to sleep at his.
It wasn’t even a conversation, they were just cuddled up together watching some movie in the background.
And he had mentioned it.
“..I always wanted one of those as a kid, wasn’t allowed it though, Something about ‘Video games are not suitable if you’re going to be taking over the company some day.’”
She looked up at him, then squinted at the Tv.
“You weren’t allowed a gameboy, seriously?”
he nodded, pulling her closer.
“Mhm. I know it’s silly, and we have phones nowadays. But I’d still like one, maybe the yellow.”
.
It had seemed so out of character for him, He’d always forget his phone at school, since he was barely on it. And he wanted a gameboy?
But she could find one, and they were way more affordable used than one of those collector dogs. That could be..a future present once she’s got a better job.
So she made her way to the nearest tech shop, on train. Because the only one nearby that had them was one hour and forty-five minutes away.
She walked into the store, and 25 minutes later. She was the proud new owner of a used gameboy, in yellow.
She tucked it into the pocket of her bag, then made her way back to the train station.
-
In 10 minutes, N was meeting her at the park. It’s where they first bumped into eachother. She’d never been one for restaurants or just loud places in general. So the park, a picnic, was perfect.
She had already set up the blanket, a blue and white checkered one. He was bringing the food, which they had made together earlier that week.
She leaned against the tree, checking the time.
“..8.”
She sighed, her hand scrunching the skirt of her dress.
Pull it together, Doorman. She’d dated him for a year and was still nervous about these kind of things?
The gameboy was stored safely in a little box next to her, wrapped in silver paper. It was a little messy, but how was she supposed to learn present-wrapping so soon? It was an art, one that she didn’t get.
The sound of leaves rusting caught her attention, and she looked up.
“Hey- sorry I’m early. I just couldn’t wait.”
Her heart stopped for a second, He was actually here.
In one hand, he was carrying the picnic basket, and the other a small purple bag.
He kneeled down next to her, placing the stuff down.
“H-Hey. It’s uh, okay. Don’t be sorry.”
She stuttered, face going pink already.
He smiled at her, looking her over momentarily.
“..Your dress is pretty, is it new?”
She nodded, looking back down at the blanket.
“Mhm- so, uh. Do we..do the gift giving first or?”
He shrugged.
“I don’t mind. Though..I don’t really wanna wait so here.”
He picked the purple bag up and placed it in her lap.
She paused, then picked up the box and passed it over to him.
“Open at the same time?”
He nodded. His eyes sparkling with excitement, and adoration.
“3..2..”
“1.”
They said at the same time.
N began slowly peeling the paper off, while Uzi dug through the paper in the bag to pull out the box at the bottom.
She opened it slowly, a gasp escaping her.
“Holy crap- N. This looks so- how much did you spend on this?”
He chucked sheepishly, his hand going to rub his neck.
“Uhh..I’ll tell you in a couple..years?”
“..Oh..thank you.”
She picked up the necklace, her eyes pricked with tears, but she blinked them away.
“Hey- I thought we were opening them at the same time?”
He straightened up.
“Well, I wanted to see your reaction properly, but I guess I will now.”
He undid the top of the box, then pulled out the gameboy.
“No way. You didn’t.”
“..surprise? I remembered you mentioned it once and I thought-“
He had already pulled her into a hug. Kissing her forehead.
“Oh you’re the best, thank you. I love you- have I told you how much I love you?”
She went bright red.
“..I’m glad you like it. I love you too.”
She leaned against him, before placing the box the necklace was in on the blanket infront of her, keeping it in sight.
“You wanna start eating now?”
“Yeah.”
