I like the idea of Not Right being a mantra or a comfort song for Avid, so I wrote something. It kind of got away with me with Owen, but...I think I like it

Notes:

I'm a new alter and I've never written anything before so please be nice.

Work Text:

"We are fine even though we just might cross the line,

"We are fine even though we just might cross the line,

"We are fine even though we just might cross the line,

"Might cross the line, might cross the —"

   "What's that you're singing?"

Avid shrieked as Owen appeared beside him, stepping out of the woods like melting chocolate.

"Relax." Owen's gaze ran over the surrounding trees like they were worth little more than a passing glance. "It's just me."

"Oh, uh, yeah!" Avid's eyes darted between the leaves, searching for movement in the shadows. "Just you, mhm."

Owen raised his eyebrows but didn't seem interested in bullying Avid's psyche any more for the night. "What was that, uh, tune you were singing?"

We are fine even though we just might cross the line

"Oh, right!" Avid said, pivoting around Owen to walk toward the main path. "Yeah, it's just uh, something my partner and I used to sing."

"Your…partner?" Owen raised an eyebrow, seeming unimpressed. "Where are they, then?"

"I'm fine." His partner smiled as canines poked too sharp over her lips. "Better than ever, actually."

We are fine even though we just might cross the line

Splinters cut Avid's hands as the stake dropped to the floor, reddened with blood.

We are fine even though we just might cross the line

Avid swallowed back grief and guilt too heavy to stomach. "They're — they're the one that — that I lost."

"Ah," Owen paused beside him. "To vampires, huh?"

"Yes!" Avid exclaimed, whirling toward him. "At least I — I think. It has to be, she would've never —"

Owen shook his head and walked ahead of Avid, ruffling his hair as he passed. "You're in your head too much, Avid." He said. "It's a beautiful world out there if you let it be."

Avid fixed his hair and glowered after Owen. "I know that! I'm just trying to keep everybody safe!"

Owen stopped and looked over his shoulder. Something ancient settled in his eyes. "Relax, Avid." He turned back to the trees. "There are worse things than vampires in the world."

Just as easily as he'd come, Owen melted back into the shadows like they were old friends.
