Chapter 1: Unearthing

Chapter Text

The Fool stared blankly at the notebook in front of him. Now how did they manage to find this one?

“Mr. Fool,” spoke Ms. Justice, “I have found a collector of the pages from Roselle Gustav's writings.”

Mr. Fool held back a laugh. So they really don't see the difference in handwriting? “I'd be of more interest as to how you acquired this notebook than as to its contents.”

“You think they have more pages, Mr. Fool?”

“Ms. Justice. These are not the writings of Roselle Gustav. Don't worry, I'll still give you a reward for this discovery.”

“Really, Mr. Fool? Then there's another who writes in this language besides Roselle Gustav! Would you like us to collect their pages too?”

“Given that you can't tell their writings apart, please do.”

“Yes, Mr. Fool,” Justice, Sun, and Hanged Man answered in synch.

“As to how you've found the notebook?” Mr. Fool leaned forward, very curious. Did Melissa just sell everything I owned back then?

“It was brought to me from someone who knew I was interested. I was told it was a speaker of ancient languages, a history student from Tingen.”

“I don't think that's completely true.” not even history graduate? Student? No we are fixing that. “Do learn more if you can.”

“Mr. Fool, if I may,” Hanged Man spoke carefully and calculated, “what exactly do you want to know?”

The Fool considered this. “I suppose I'm mostly curious if his grave is empty.”

Everyone else gasped.

Justice spoke, “you think he's dead, Mr. Fool?”

Mr. Fool let her sit in silence.

“Of course, you would know Mr. Fool.”

The Fool wanted to laugh. Playing God was always hilarious to him deep down. His silence was worth pure gold to these people. He was hoping she'd connect that his stuff wouldn't have been sold at random if he was alive but he'd accept her answer.

“Mr. Fool, if I may ask,”

“Go ahead,” the Fool was prepared to give her a reward for her findings.

“Why do you think the grave might be empty?”

“I have my reasons. I think you'd find it much more fulfilling to discover the reasons yourself.”

“By your will, Mr. Fool.”

The Fool used the mist to return the notebook to Justice.

“Hello there,” the lady at the front desk greeted Audrey.

“Is this where Klein Moretti used to work?”

The lady tilted her head. “How did you know Klein? I can't say you're familiar.”

“I'm here on behalf of my local tarot club. I came across his journal and I was curious about some of the contents.”

“Journal?”

“Yes. Klein Moretti kept a journal.”

“Let me go get Leonard, they used to be partners in work.”

“Of course.”

She rushed to the back of the house and re-emerged with a handsome lad.

“You must be Leonard. Good evening,” Audrey curtsied. “My name is, well, why don't you call me Justice! I'll feel much more in the spirit of this investigation.”

“Justice?”

“Yes! Well, you see, my local tarot club has been trying to make sense of Roselle's writings and we stumbled across a journal from your coworker, Klein Moretti."

“May I see it?”

“Of course. Can you read it as well then?”

“Read what, exactly?”

“The code Roselle used. Klein used it in his journal.”

Curiosity peaked, Leonard took the journal and flipped through it. Was this Klein's secret? He could read the Roselle texts?

Why didn't he tell anyone? This could have been extremely valuable.

Well. No use now.

“Why do you believe this is Klein's?”

“I bought it off his sister.”

“Fascinating. I'm afraid I won't be of much assistance as to what he knew. I hadn't known myself. Is there any chance I could buy this book off you?”

“Only if you answer one more query.”

“Surely. I fear your question- you seem quite attached to this mystery after all.”

“Is Klein's grave really empty?”

“His body was buried- it wasn't an empty casket.”

“Even now?”

“Are you accusing his grave of being robbed?”

“I'm not sure myself. My tarot club simply divined that there was good chances for the grave to be empty.”

“I assure you it isn't."

“Well, prove it. Prove it and the notebook is yours.”

“You want me to disturb the dead, miss?”

“If I'm right, well, there won't be anything to disturb.”

“Can I get a contact information? I'll look into this.”

“I'll come back in two weeks time. Same place same time. How's that?”

Leonard frowned. “Fine. Bring the notebook.”

Justice smiled. “Yes of course.”

Leonard watched her leave with Klein's apparent journal in hand. Well. That was interesting. The higher ups aren't going to like this.

Leonard found a seer and had them ask the simple question- is Klein Moretti's grave empty. No response.

Strange.

Is Klein Moretti dead?

No response.

It's as if a force was intercepting all things about Klein.

Well. Perhaps he should be more specific.

Is Klein's body in the grave?

Finally an answer. No.

Leonard felt his stomach drop. Had someone grave robbed?

Leonard got through the paperwork to raise the grave and dig through it. Sure enough there was nothing in the casket and nothing but dirt around it.

But how in the world did someone rob the grave? And what did Justice have to do with it?

When he met with Justice again he sat down with her over tea.

“Its as you said, grave was empty.”

“Really?”

“How did you know Klein?”

“I didn't. We just stumbled across this journal. I must say I'm quite interested in Klein. He's become quite the mystery to me.”

“I see that. May I have the journal?”

“Of course. A deal is a deal.”

They chatted in circles before Justice left again.

Leonard smiled fakely as she left. Now what to do with this?
