Work Text:
“Hey ‘Zash, can you pass me that spider?”
Aizawa and the rest of the U.A staff had been tasked with decorating the campus for Halloween. Nezu thought it would help the students feel more like kids and not living targets, and unfortunately Aizawa had to agree with him. Though, he hadn't imagined himself balancing dangerously on a wobbly chair to accomplish that.
His husband, Hizashi, had stood from where he was cutting out various shapes for their impromptu diy paper garlands, and was holding another spider out for Aizawa. He grabbed it with a quiet ‘thanks’ and attached it to the wall.
“Ok, how's that look?” Aizawa asked as he hopped back onto steady ground, a hand reaching out for Hizashi as his right leg landed wrong.
Hizashi hesitated. “...I think it looks great!”
“You're lying aren't you.”
“... Ok yeah that one spider is really crooked. I'm sorry Shouta.”
Aizawa sighed and leaned against a desk. “You get to fix it. I'm not getting back on that chair with this leg,” he said with a wave of his hand.
Hizashi shook his head with a chuckle and hopped onto the chair Aizawa had been using. “I'm supposed to be the clumsy one here, babe.” He teased.
“Yeah, well it's not my fault somebody didn't pick up Eri's toys, now is it?” Aizawa grumbled, folding his arms. He had sprained his ankle the week prior because for Christmas last year Eri had been gifted a giant sword. His ankle only suffered because he was trying to avoid the blade and a worse injury. He huffed, “I mean really who gifts a little girl that? And why haven't we just gotten rid of it?”
Without looking back, Hizashi said, “Aww but she loves it so much!!”
With the spider now fixed in place, Hizashi copied his lover's earlier action and hopped off the chair to take a look at his handiwork.
“Yeah, it looks better ‘Zashi.” Aizawa muttered. He gave the blonde a chaste kiss, cringing when he heard another voice behind them.
“Oh, how invigorating~!!!”
The pair turned to see their friend and fellow teacher, Midnight, in the doorway. Like them, she wasn't in her hero costume.
“What do you want, Nemuri? You're supposed to be decorating the 2-A classroom,” Aizawa said. He stood away from the desk as Hizashi went back to cutting out shapes.
Nemuri took a quick glance around the room muttering a little ‘well this is cute’ before responding. “I'd like to propose a competition!!”
Hizashi looked up from his work, suddenly intrigued. “What kinda competition??” He asked with a tilt of his head.
Aizawa rolled his eyes as Nemuri continued. “A decoration competition! Let's see which teacher decorated their room the best!! Winner won't have to take their decorations down on November 1st, the losers will have to do it!” She exclaimed, jumping in uncontained excitement.
“That sounds stupid.”
“YEEAAAAAA I'M IN!!!!”
Before Aizawa could slap some sense into his idiot husband, Nemuri had already given a squeal and left. He had a feeling she ran so he couldn't refuse. He turned to Hizashi with a glare and saw the blonde looking away from him sheepishly. Aizawa sighed and shook his head. “What am I supposed to do with you.” He rubbed his face, and a small ghost of a smile slowly appeared. “Let's just hurry up and finish putting this stuff on the walls. I don't wanna pack up someone else's decorations in November.”
… … … … … … … … …
After another hour or so the two men felt satisfied enough in their work. Surely the other teachers would've put in roughly the same amount of effort. Who in their right mind would go all out on school decorating??
Nemuri had gathered all the teachers and staff into the hallway, with Nezu agreeing to be an impartial judge. He had perched on Vlad's shoulder to observe.
“I think the most logical order would be chronological by year and class.” Nemuri suggested, ready to lead this competition.
When everyone nodded in assent, attention was turned to the door of Class 1-A. Aizawa sighed and opened the door, revealing the rather simple but cutely decorated room. Spiders were hung along the wall with webs in a few corners. Above the digital chalkboard were paper garlands of bats and the words “Happy Halloween!!” A small doodle of a cat with a witches broom and hat was in the corner of the board.
The room granted a few ‘aww's. Snipe was the first to offer criticism. “Not a lot goin’ on, is there??” He said.
Aizawa threw the cowboy a glare. “Well this is still a school. I don't want my students to be distracted by an overabundance of decorations.” He put simply.
This earned him some muttered ‘fair's, ‘good point’s, and one ‘boring.’ Aizawa grumbled incoherently.
“I must say he does carry the right mindset for what I asked of all of you,” Nezu spoke up from Vlad's shoulder.
The group mumbled their opinions before moving on to Class 1-B. Vlad had a smug look on his face as he opened his class’ door. Immediately, everyone was hit with the multiple blood spatters and handprints. The windows had bloody phrases on them like ‘LEAVE NOW’ and ‘YOU'LL BE NEXT.’ In the back of the room there were a couple empty IV stands, though one looked filled with blood.
“So? Just declare me the winner already.” Vlad said, a grin growing on his face.
“Um, that is fake blood, right??” Cementoss asked.
Vlad's head jerked in his direction. “Of course it is!! The windows are blood stickers and the spatters are painted. What do you take me for, you oversized brick!!”
“Hmm…” Nemuri stepped forward. “This seems a bit too gory seeing as most of our students have been forced to see real blood up close. Blood often belonging to them or their classmates. Our first years are only 15 on average.” She pointed out.
Nezu nodded along. “Another good point. I won't make you redecorate but you will lose points I fear.”
Vlad scowled but stayed silent, knowing better than to argue with their principle. Especially when his shoulder was the principal's seat.
They sped through the rest of the rooms after that. Snipe's had animal skulls and fake bullet hole stickers on his walls. Ectoplasm's had a coffin next to his teaching podium. And Cementoss had made his classroom a replica of Frankenstein's lab, effectively baffling everyone. Nemuri's class had whips and chains and model replicas of medieval torture devices, earning a few uneasy murmurs.
Finally, they reached the last room. Technically, it was the staff room but they allowed All Might to decorate it since he wasn't assigned a homeroom class as the heroics teacher and symbol of peace.
“Now, it's not as crazy as Cementoss’ or Midnight's but I'm quite proud of it!!” He stated, swinging the door open. Gasps rang out as they all took in the perfectly decorated room. There was a pumpkin, some carved and some not, on almost every table surface with black and purple tablecloths underneath them. Each carved pumpkin was of a different teacher's face.
Midnight screamed as she ran to the pumpkin with her face. “YAGI THIS IS BEAUTIFUL CAN I KEEP IT!!??”
“HAA!! LOOK SHO HE REALLY CAPTURED YOUR LIKENESS!” Hizashi said, holding out a pumpkin with Aizawa's face on it.
All Might found himself blushing at the positive reaction. “I'm glad you all like your pumpkins, but I'd prefer if you don't take my decorations please.” He requested, cutting off the various comments about the vegetables. A few sad sighs broke out as pumpkins were put back in their places.
Although they were the immediate star of the room, there were more than just pumpkins to look at. All Might had hung multicolored purple, green, and orange fairy lights all around. There were also small ghosts hanging from the ceiling that swayed when you walked past them. He seemed to have bought multiple Halloween decorative pillows for the couch as well. All over, the room was the most cohesive and on theme of them all.
Everyone turned to Nezu, awaiting his results, although everyone had a suspicion who would win.
Hopping off Vlad's shoulder, Nezu found the pumpkin with his face on it and picked it up. “This craftsmanship is truly a wonder… All Might wins.” He said, simply as he set the pumpkin back down.
Nobody was really upset about the verdict, the staff room just looked that good. It was a deserved win.
Though, Aizawa did take the chance to slap Hizashi on the back of the head as payback for getting them involved in the competition to start with.
