Work Text:

Agony.

Relentless, unending agony.

Darkness.

Relentless, unending darkness.

Every waking moment is an ongoing repetition of both.

It is his only companion. A companion he never asked for.

There is no rest or reprieve to be found.

There is only… isolation.

And to think… that all of this was because of love.

It had to be worth it, though.

He would endure this forever if it meant that… she would live.

He had done so before, and his transgression was worth the punishment.

But even now, he doesn’t know if she made it out of that last one.

After all, in those scant few moments before this became his new reality, she had been rendered bloody and broken by that fiendish assassin in human skin.

And the look on her face. It was haunted. And he couldn’t blame her.

After all, he had been reluctant yet obligated to leave her side and be with his patron.

Still… if his heart had still beat, it would‘ve been broken all the same just seeing that face.

Thirty years apart, and all of a sudden he appeared before her again.

It wasn’t hard to put two and two together.

Thinking about all of that only adds to the agony, if anything.

The uncertainty of her survival, the knowledge that she had borne witness to what is happening to him now, the reality that is encompassing his sense of awareness…

It all takes its toll on him. And it refuses to end.

He continues to scream, his wails unheard and unheeded, his very essence used for a nefarious purpose.

He was used. He was baited.

And it was she who was the bait to lure him in.

That just compounds the agony all over again.

For the briefest of moments, he had wondered if things would have been different had they not fallen in love. Perhaps then, this wouldn’t be happening.

But if not him, it would have been someone else.

He continues to scream, praying despite the futility of it all that somehow… his love… his home… had managed to endure and survive.

Notes:

He had to endure that suffering… for at least thirty days…
Given all of that, he deserved his happy ending and newfound lease on life.
