OPERATION: EVER AFTER

Summary:

Padme and Anakin have a public wedding after the Clone War and, as the Maid of Honor, you’ve thought of the most wonderful idea for your Moulin Rouge! obsessed bestie and now regret every single decision you’ve ever made since you actually have to perform a love medley with the one person you can’t jokingly confess your undying love to.

Notes:

For when you need some fun, happy star wars vibes, can’t get Moulin Rouge! out of your head and are in love with Obi-Wan. That’s it. Might consider making this an entire series. Have fun!!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Last week you thought this was the best idea you’ve ever had in your entire life. Now you regret every single decision you’ve ever made. Because why did singing seem like a good idea? It’s personal, yes, and everyone loves music. But could you actually sing? No. No, not really.

But that wasn’t the worst part about this entire ordeal. One you’ve fully gotten yourself into. Thanks again, you idiot.

All stress about your upcoming schedule today aside, you have been beaming with excitement for weeks now. Days felt lighter, your usually optimistic self had been thriving long after the hours at the Temple assisting with youngling classes. Because your best friends were finally getting marrier. Publically. You knew about Anakin and Padme’s engagement even before the Clone War started. Anakin was never subtle, and Padme couldn’t fully deny it when you had asked all those years ago.

But now that the war has finally ended, they wanted to be together. Anakin had made the decision to step to the Council and tell them the truth, and Padme was stepping down as senator. And you’ve been crying tears of joy and sadness these past few weeks. Because Padme stepping down meant she wouldn’t visit Coruscant as often, meaning you wouldn’t get to see her as often as you’d like (which was still too little now). But Anakin leaving was something else. He’s been a steady anchor in your life for the past few years, so much has happened. And he was always there. To tease you or hype you up, just like a little brother would. Nights the past few weeks have either felt way too heavy and endlessely long, unable to sleep because of the ache of missing them both overwhelming you. Or they’ve been bittersweet, either beaming with excitement and ideas rushing in for their wedding day.

The day they’ve waited for for years. One they’ve fantasized about even after they had said the words ‘’I do’’. And you want to help make their dreams come true. Especially when Padme had asked you to be her Maid of Honor. You’ve never been that ecstatic.

Which is why you’re determined to make it a day they’ll never forget.

You only wish you had payed the slightest amount of attention to the concequences of your idea’s.

Because this is the most impossible stunt you’ve ever had to pull off.

Sitting infront of him now, datapads scattered around his end of the table, mirroring your own slightly more disorganized mess, Obi-Wan looked focused. Well, as focused as one might be able to fake while writing reports for the latest aid mission.

You were working on similar, brain fogging reports of themes like conflict mediations between planets or training and support of local militia. The latter had taken every spark of discipline you had left in your body to finish. But right now you were working on **.** If you hadn’t been zoned out for the past 20 minutes. Because your mind had drifted to the wedding, as it often did these past weeks, You didn’t notice the way you were fumbling with your pen while thinking about the latest updates. They officially had a location, in one of the classical buildings in the Lake District on Naboo, the area they got engaged in the first place. You knew Anakin had been busy with details he couldn’t care less about. Flower buoquets, presents, invites, cake toppings. He did care about the flavor though.

But you had plans of your own. Because if Padme had chosen you as the Maid of Honor, you for sure weren’t going to make her regret it. You’ve been brainstorming ideas for weeks, not just for your speech, which you’ve rewritten about 21 times now. But about your secret project. You wanted to surprise them, make them laugh, with something they wouldn’t forget. Because they deserved it more than anyone else after the hardships they’ve faced not just during the past years, but their entire lives. They finally get to be happy and you wanted this day to be just that. A celebration of happiness and the love they have for the other. You just weren’t sure how. Until 2 days ago. When you miraciolously got an idea at 2am pacing your room.

It was stupid. A little silly, and could’ve come from an absolute idiot. But your thoughts had escaleted this foolish idea into something that could actually work. Within an hour. A personal, authentic, amusing, hilarious and bittersweet celebration of their love.

No it was stupid.

But you were sure it would make both Padme and Anakin laugh.

Loudly.

And if it meant putting your own embarrasment aside, just so they would have a wedding they wouldn’t forget, it was worth it.

Because creating a stage play about their love story had taken over your entire mind.

‘’Alright I’ll bite, what’s going on?’’ Obi-Wan’s voice suddenly filled the room.

You almost dropped your pen.

‘’Nothing, just can’t focus on these reports.’’ You said calmy picking up your datapad again.

But Obi-Wan could practically hear your thoughts racing.

‘’Something else on your mind?’’ He asked, way too calmly for your liking. You glanced at him. He looked painfully perceptive. And you couldn’t hide the grin that was growing on your face. There’s a reason you try to hide it though.

‘’I was thinking about the wedding.’’ You admit after a moment, a hint of mischief in your voice betraying you.

‘’Well I do hope that the Maid of Honor has been occupied with thoughts alike after that announcement.’’ Obi-Wan responded amused yet slightly curious.

You look up at him for a moment. A moment that stretched into a silence. Were you really doing this?

“What is it?’’ Obi-Wan asked again.

There were 2 obstacles in your grand masterplan you had come up with. And one of them was sitting right in front of you.

The thought about this play hadn’t left your mind since the night you came up with it and you only seemed to be able to think of more ideas. And Force help you, you actually got a wonderful idea this morning. A wonderfully embarrassing idea.

You knew Padme loved plays, theater, art, anything along those lines. With a passion. And she’s the one who has introduced you to many different plays throughout the years. Movie nights watching them on the Holonet are some of the fondest memories you have with Padme. And Anakin isn’t against them, he thinks some are fairly enjoyable. Though you’ve suspected he secretely loves most of the love songs because they remind him of Padme. You’ve teased him about it in the past, recognizing a familiar tune he was humming working late at night on ships, droids, anything he could fix. He always denied it with slightly too pink cheeks.

But you’ve been stuck with this idea of a play not only because Padme loves theater, but because they’ve had to hide their love for years, from basically everyone. Except for you, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, Rex and a few of Padme’s closest friends and family. But so many people don’t know about everything that happened in their story, and as the Maid of Honor you felt like it was your duty to tell it, as their friend. And, in this way, everyone got a glimpse into what their relationship was like during the years of secrecy.

So you knew Padme loved all kinds of plays.

But there’s one she’s always loved just a bit more than the rest.

And that was Moulin Rouge!…

One you’ve watched with her many times, because it was her favorite. It was one of yours too, but Padme had always loved the tragic romance in it. But Padme had said, on multiple occasions, that Obi-Wan looked so much like the actor who played Christian. And Force, you had wanted to deny it, but she had been right. But one night, when you and Padme were just a little tipsy watching the movie Padme told you that she would sell her most expensive dress just so she could see Obi-Wan perform a love duet. With you.

You had proceded to attack her with multiple pillows that night.

Because she knew about our feelings for Obi-Wan. That made it either better or worse, you didn’t know.

You just didn’t think you would actually do it.

Looking at Obi-Wan now you felt your heart beating rapidly in your chest.

This was definitely the stupidest idea you’ve ever had.

He gave you a look, and you remember he’s waiting for an awnser.

You just had to build the courage to respond.

‘’Well… I’ve been thinking…. About.. I don’t know, doing something beside the speech.. Because they’ve waited so many years to have their wedding and they both deserve it more than anyone—’’ You eventually started to ramble.

But then fell silent looking at your datapad.

How were you going to ask him this?

When Obi-Wan still didn’t have an awnser you heard his voice again.

‘’What were you thinking?’’

You look up at him. A hint of embarrasment underlying the fact you can’t keep a straight face. He didn’t miss it.

‘’Well…. Okay so what if…. Hypothetically….. We performed… A play..?’’ You manage to get out after a moment without cracking up.

He just looked at you for a moment and raised his eyebrow. ‘’A play?’’

Yes this was stupid.

‘’Yes…. About their love story.’’ You say after a moment and can’t help the smile on your face because the idea was hideous. But so were they.

Obi-Wan had a sprinkle of amusement in his eye as he set down his datapad, leaned back slightly and crossed his arms looking at you. Because he could tell you had given this a fair amount of thought.

‘’And how are you envisioning said play?” He mused. Almost with a smirk. And you had to keep yourself from bursting out with laughter.

‘’Okay so..’’ You started, grin spreading across your face, and you told him your idea. ‘’It’s because Padme has always loved plays— but we start during their childhood, and have a narrator as well as people portraying Anakin and Padme, maybe there will be a few cameos too, I don’t know. But maybe people will sing songs too? Ones that either resonate with them or have been important for both of them, and then we touch on their engagement before the war, and what their relationship was like during it, and now finally that they’re openly together.’’ You rambled on.

And Obi-Wan was silent for a long moment as he listened to you. He kept looking at you, expression stagnant.

You felt your heartbeat rising the longer his silence went on.

‘’Well…?’’ You ask softer than you intended.

He was silent for another moment.

‘’Sing?’’

Oh Force.

You close your eyes shaking your head. ‘’I know- I know— I don’t sing, ever, you know that but…’’ You sigh. ‘’I can’t help but feel like it would mean something to both of them— and they’d remember it. We’d make them laugh. That’s all that matters.. Right?’’ You fumble out after a moment and look at him, unable to fully hide the embarrasment you felt to your core.

His gaze was nerve-racking.

Obi-Wan just smiled slightly. But fondly.

Force help us all

‘’That… Actually isn’t one of your worst ideas.’’ He awnsered after a moment. And you sighed in relief.

‘’You really think so?’’ You ask after a moment.

Obi-Wan responded calmly. ‘’It fits them both, Anakin and Padme. Like you said. I think it would linger… For.. Well a long time.’’

And you smiled.

Then bit your lip because there was one more obstacle. And he was still sitting infront of you.

You glanced at him and you almost wish you hadn’t.

He eyed you suspiciously. Because why were you still acting like you had other plans.

‘’There’s something else… Another one of your crazy ideas perhaps?’’

You almost laughed. Almost.

But your heartbeat was stuck in your throat now.

And you squeezed your eyes shut for a moment.

‘’What if you’d sing?’’ You blurt out.

You open your eyes and look at him.

His eyes just widened.

“You want me to sing?’’

‘’A duet.’’ You quickly manage to force out of your throat. Before you wouldn’t be able to.

And Obi-Wan’s expression shifted.

And you couldn’t stop the laugh escaping your throat.

‘’Okay listen— let me explaing look, Padme has always loved Moulin Rouge!, that one play, and she mentioned quite a few times how you look like the actor. And as the Best Man I thought… Maybe it would be fitting to sing this one song? Because it fits their story…?” You try to sound as convincing as possible even though you’re unsure about everything you’ve told him thusfar. Especially over this.

Obi-Wan looked like he had seen a ghost. But a friendly one.

He furrowed his brows. “You know I can’t sing for the life of me right?”

You give him a look.

“It’s not about that- that doesn’t matter, it’s not like I can sing well either.” You tell him after a moment. “And besides, from what I’ve heard your singing isn’t that awful.” You mumble looking down at your hands.

Obi-Wan sighed softly.

“You think it would be that meaningful to them.” He asked after a moment, not enthousiastic but not against your idea either.

You take a moment to let his question sink in. But nod then.

“You mean a lot to them, you know..”

He gave you a look. Contemplated for another moment and then sighed looking at you.

“I do hope I won‘t regret this for the rest of my life.”

And he saw the way you beamed with excitement.

“Really? Thank you-“ You blurt out and practically jump out of your chair, walk over to him and put your hands on his shoulders. “This is gonna be so great— They’re gonna love it!”

Obi-Wan just shook his head at your little excited jumps.

“Right- right I’m sure they will. You think you can focus on these reports again? We have two hours left.”

You give him a look. “Hey you’re ruïning the fun!”

And he gave you a look of his own.

Until his expression softened.

“They’ll love it, I’m sure. It’s a great idea. And you can tell me all your thoughts about it, but shall we first finish these reports?”

You look at him for a moment and wince softly.

“Fine. Reports first.” You say and get back to your seat.

Obi-Wan shifted toonand picked up his datapad again, you mirrored him. And a comfortable silence fell over the two of you. One that’s build over many years of friendship. Never more.

You look up at him after a few moments.

“Obi?” You ask softly.

He looked up, eyebrows raised slightly.

“Yes?”

You paused for a moment unsure what to say.

“Thank you.”

His eyes just softened slightly.

“Always.”

And he looked away again.

You didn’t know how you were going to survive this, but one thing you did know is that Obi-Wan would always be there to save you.

Unless you died in his arms.

Unless he was the cause of your death.

Notes:

So that was a glimpse of my little ‘happy star wars au’ daydream universe I’ve had stuck in my head for a week or so. Might’ve made an entire playlist for said play too. Please forgive me for any spelling errors I don’t have a beta reader and haven’t checked it whoops— Anyways, hope you enjoyed, kudo’s are much appreciated and may the Force be with you!! <3

Oh and let me know if you want me to continue this as a series!! I’ll think about it!
