Work Text:
Wednesday was in a flow state. Her fingers danced around her keyboard, gracefully filling line after line with the latest tale of Viper de la Muerte. Just as she was about to finish the novel’s thrilling climax her attention was broken by a gratingly loud bubbling sound. With gritted teeth, she turned to the technicolor eyesore and the origin of the strange noise: her roommate’s side of the room. Enid laid on her bed, kicking her feet in the air as she scrolled through her never-ending, mind-numbing social media feed. Wednesday noticed that her roommate held her phone in one hand as the other was preoccupied with a strange device. It was bright pink, the same garish color as the streaks in her hair. Enid brought the nozzle from the contraption’s end to her mouth and inhaled. That thing bubbled again as the werewolf took a deep breath. She exhaled a cloud of white smoke that reeked of artificial bubble gum.
“What is that?” Wednesday demand, glaring daggers across the room. With the phone’s trance broken, Enid glanced at her roommate and noticed the intense stare. She shifted positions, maneuvering between the plethora of stuffed animals and throw pillows, and sat on the side of her bed. Enid traced Wednesday’s eyeline to the object in her hand.
“This thing?” Enid asked, waving the pink apparatus around her face. "Wednesday Addams, do you really not know what a vape is? I thought you went to public school.” The bubbleheaded brat’s teasing tone was like nails on a chalkboard to Wednesday’s gothic ears.
“I never paid attention to what those hormone-crazed neanderthals did in their spare time,” Wednesday barked back. Enid responds by wrapping her lips around the vape and inhaling. After the vape let out its familiar bubbling sound another stream of sickly-sweet smelling vapor filled the room. Enid noticed Wednesday’s transfixed gaze and a smile creeped up at the end of her lips.
“Wanna try it?” Enid asked as her grin grew causing her to bare her sharp canines. The device did fill Wednesday with a slight sense of curiosity, but she knew she’d break out into hives if she tried to hold it herself; and Wednesday would rather drop dead than ask Enid for help and show her belly like an obedient hound. So that left her one option: refusal.
“I would rather have Ajax stone me than try that. Besides, I’m allergic to color.” Enid chuckled at the other girl’s response. She never could tell if Wednesday was joking or not when she’d say she’s allergic to color. Without breaking eye contact, Enid took another hit and blew out the smoke, this time away from Wednesday rather than towards her.
“Come on, it's not that bad,” Enid said while getting up from her bed and crossing the black tape over to her roommate's territory. “You just put your lips here, suck in a little, and breathe out.” She held out the vape out in front of her, beckoning the goth girl. Wednesday’s ears went hot as she felt Enid’s presence close towards her. She felt the same way when Enid wrapped her arms around her after winning the Poe Cup. Pushing her emotions down to the dark pit next to her cold black heart, she lowered her head and delicately wrapped her lips and breathed in. Her lungs were assaulted with an aerosol of candy flavored chemicals. Wednesday’s dead-serious composure shattered ever briefly as she engaged in a coughing fit, sending the vapor out of her mouth in bits and spurts. Laughter filled the air as Enid tried to stifle her enjoyment of the spectacle in hopes to avoid a biblical retaliation.
“You okay, roomie?” Enid asked, placing a hand on Wednesday’s back. Her ears became red hot instantly as she felt the warm touch on her back. Blush filled her cheeks, causing her to quickly turn away from Enid. Nothing would be more embarrassing than her blushing in front of her roommate. Wednesday didn’t even like Enid. Or, at least, she thought she didn’t. While facing her desk a brilliant idea popped into Wednesday’s devious mind. She moved quickly and opened the bottom drawer on the right side of the desk. The drawer's only contents were a pack of cigarettes and a lighter that was blacker than obsidian. Enid’s eyes widened.
“I didn’t know you smoked,” Enid said with so much uncertainty it almost sounded like a question.
“Every Addams has a vice; My father has whiskey, my uncle has electroshock therapy, and I have this,” Wednesday said, pulling a cigarette from the pack. “Try this.”
Enid's warm fingers brushed against Wednesday's cold hand as she grabbed the cigarette. She put it to her lips and eagerly awaited assistance. Wednesday struck the side of the lighter, causing a small flame to emerge from the top. She tilted her head down to avoid Enid’s eyes as her hand moved closer to light the cigarette. Enid’s faux hesitation melted away into a look of confidence, like she’s done this before. She took a quick drag and blew the smoke out towards the circular window at the end of the room.
Wednesday stared at Enid’s lips as she exhaled, savoring every detail as the cloud of smoke exited her mouth with an almost cinematic effort. Enid’s arm extended as she held out the cig, motioning for Wednesday to take a drag. Wednesday felt her ears get hotter than ever before as she noticed the werewolf’s red lipstick stained on the end of the cigarette. Her heart skipped a beat as her lips touched the same spot as Enid’s. As she took a drag, her mind and heart felt out of sync; she hated Enid’s garish outfits, her vapid behavior, and the pop drivel that blared out of her headphones. But every time she was with Enid, she was struck with an anxiety that she never felt before. The pair passed the cigarette back and forth until it was nothing but a stub. Wednesday let it hit the ground and stamped it out with her black combat boots. Enid chuckled at the small pile of ash on the floor.
“We probably should have smoked that on the balcony. Thornhill will kill us,” Enid said, shifting from side to side. Wednesday pulled a second cigarette from the pack and motioned towards the circular window at the end of the room.
“We always can,” Wednesday remarked with a rare earnest enthusiasm. Enid silently plucked the cigarette from the goth girl’s fingers and twirled towards the window. Wednesday followed like an obedient dog. The pair ducked under the opening in the window and stepped onto the balcony. The frigid autumn air calmed Wednesday's nerves but she noticed that Enid’s demeanor shifted. She stood there basking in the light of the full moon, a reminder of how she has never been able to wolf out. Lighter in hand, Wednesday stepped closer to her roommate. She paused to marvel at the way Enid’s skin glowed under the light of the full moon, the way her blue eyes dazzled, the way her lips… Like a woman possessed, Wednesday lunged forward and kissed Enid.
“I’m…” Wednesday muttered as she stepped backwards. “I’m sorry.”
The cigarette crashed to the ground as Enid’s hand moved to grab Wednesday's face. She accepted the other’s apology with a kiss more addicting than nicotine. Their lips embraced in a dance of passion until Enid broke off to catch her breath.
“You have nothing to be sorry about.”
