Blood and Fire

Summary:

Lily Evans and her twin sister Mackenzie never expected their fifth year at Hogwarts to mark the beginning of something far darker than late-night common room talks and Quidditch rivalries. The war against Voldemort is brewing outside the castle walls, whispers of Death Eaters seep into the corridors, and even within Hogwarts, trust begins to fracture.

Work Text:

CHAPTER 1: The Return To Hogwarts

The platform at King’s Cross was its usual whirl of chaos: owls shrieking from their cages, cats weaving through legs, and the scarlet Hogwarts Express letting out bursts of steam that turned the air hazy. The smell of smoke and excitement hung heavy, and students darted about, laughing, shouting, and waving goodbye to their families.

In the middle of it all stood the Evans twins, trunks piled high beside them.

“Careful with that, Mackenzie!” Lily huffed as her sister shoved a stack of books into her trunk at the last moment.

“Relax, Lily-flower—” Mackenzie began with a grin, only for Lily to swat her arm.

“Don’t you dare call me that.”

“You hate it when James calls you that too,” Mackenzie teased, eyes sparkling. “Which is exactly why it’s perfect.”

Before Lily could retort, a familiar voice rang out over the crowd.

“Evans!” James Potter appeared, messy-haired and smug as ever, dragging his own trunk along while Sirius Black strolled beside him like he owned the platform. Remus Lupin followed at a calmer pace, a book tucked under one arm, and Peter Pettigrew trailed behind, struggling to keep up. James’s hazel eyes immediately lit up when they landed on Lily. He gave a mock bow, wand twirling between his fingers. “Lily-flower, allow me to escort you to the train.”

“Oh, Merlin,” Lily groaned, shoving her trunk forward. “Go away, Potter.”

Mackenzie smirked as Sirius clapped a hand dramatically over his heart. “Ouch. Brutal rejection. You’ll recover, mate. Eventually.”

“Don’t encourage him,” Lily said sharply.

“I wouldn’t dream of it,” Sirius said, though his grin suggested otherwise.

---

The train was crowded, laughter and chatter spilling from every compartment. Mackenzie dragged Lily down the corridor until they spotted Marlene McKinnon and Mary Macdonald waving frantically from a window.

“Oi! In here!” Mary called, sliding the door open. Her brown curls bounced as she leaned out, bright eyes lighting up at the sight of them. “Finally, I thought you two had been kidnapped.”

“By Potter’s ego, maybe,” Mackenzie said dryly as she hauled her trunk inside.

James appeared a second later, elbowing past Sirius to squeeze into the compartment too. “You wound me, Mackenzie. Truly.”

“You’ll survive.” She sat down next to Marlene, exchanging a smirk.  The compartment was full in an instant: Lily settling primly by the window, Mary chatting excitedly about her summer (“You wouldn’t believe the spell I accidentally set off in my aunt’s garden—half the roses still sparkle”), Marlene tossing her hair and laughing at everything, and the Marauders sprawling across the seats with varying degrees of smugness.

“Another year, another chance to make history,” Sirius announced, propping his boots on the seat.

“Another year, another chance to get detention,” Remus muttered without looking up from his book.

“That too,” Sirius agreed cheerfully.

---

By the time the train screeched into Hogsmeade Station, the compartment was full of chatter, Lily trying desperately to ignore James’s constant “Lily-flower” comments, and Mackenzie snorting into her sleeve every time her sister’s cheeks flushed.  The night air outside was cool and sharp, lanterns glowing along the path to the castle. Carriages rattled forward, thestrals invisible to most of the students pulling them steadily along. The Evans twins sat side by side, gazing up at the towering silhouette of Hogwarts Castle glowing warmly against the dark sky.

“Still feels like magic every time,” Mary whispered happily, hugging her cloak tighter.

“Home,” Lily murmured softly.

“Home with a side of trouble,” Mackenzie added, smirking.

Marlene laughed. “Now that’s the Hogwarts I know.”

---

The Gryffindor common room was ablaze with golden light when they arrived, fire roaring in the hearth and banners fluttering. Upstairs in the girls’ dormitory, the chaos of trunks and chatter filled the room. Marlene immediately threw herself onto a bed and claimed it.

“Mine!” she declared.

“You’re impossible,” Mary said, but her laughter betrayed her.

“Don’t worry,” Mackenzie said, dropping onto her bed and sprawling out dramatically. “I plan on being worse.”

Lily shook her head but smiled, smoothing her quilt neatly. “Here’s to another year together,” she said softly.

The girls exchanged glances, warmth and excitement glowing between them. Outside, the night deepened, shadows stretching across the grounds. Somewhere beyond those walls, whispers of danger were stirring — but for now, surrounded by friends and laughter, the war beyond felt far away.
