Now why am I showing you the old set up instead of the new one?
Other than I personally found it more interesting from a plot point of a story of exiled generations from supporting what was supposed to be the Meiji restoration and the time table towards imperial japan more interesting than the old set up for the Genshin story I wanted to tell, I found an interesting observation while writing the first chapter.
Mainly, the idea of divorcing these people from their courtly way of speaking and the kind of admiration that comes from those being in power and the kind of speak that is supposed to come from the idea of superiors and noble birth, and sadly the loss of the kind of noble games of death and assassination.
No one is getting to murder a professor of a school instead of the head of one of the three great clans.
Thoma and Ayato get to be the kind of friends that comes from being bros and a ride or die without any of that expectation crap and the role of help and the radical decision to not to be a dick to the staff and there is something in there that is captivating from equal footing and ribbing instead of dealing honor and loyalty that is to be given and earned.
Kokomi doesn’t have to deal with that actual tradition of rebelling against the government only because the king was all powerful and the peasantry was rebelling to deal with horrible advisors, someone kill me for the Inazuman civil war, instead there was no need to go around the whole issue of Ei being a god and the fact that she had some awful fucking plans after the cataclysm.
No, those two visions will clash without the imbalance that comes with one of them being a fucking sword and essentially allowing the fight to happen because she wants it to.
And Ei gets to experience the wonder of battle without any expectations and her attempts at reclaiming her ‘birthright’, because being god comes with delusions of grandeur (Unless they aren’t?)

Japan in the new set up is divided and I don’t know how to tell you this but this is close enough to the kind of dream of people like the Kamisatos of a modernized nation that they might as well stay in the empire instead of leaving for America for whatever reason. Thoma might still be born in Oregon but what’s the point then?
Itano institute is no longer a place for refuge for the modernists from the traditionalists selling out the country to the Europeans now it’s just a place where a nice portion of the Japanese immigration to America settled instead of being a bastion of modernity from a beacon of darkness.

Japan is based on the historical divide in the 600’s of the northern and southern courts, an actual interesting alt history perspective, Meiwa Is Hirohito who comes from the northern court in reality.
Xautauku is Kumazawa Takanobu, the son of Kumazawa Hiromichi, a buddhist priest who claimed to be the legitimate emperor of japan on grounds that he was descended from the southern court, iffy in real life and real in the DIB universe.

So, obviously, there has to be more to this story than a one province minor in the middle of Oregon where they could instantly mop up this one tile rebellion.
Well, they’re not really meant for a fight, they act more as a narrative device for the government (the player) to decide what must be done when they manage to occupy Portland. Ignore what you hear about that city in reality no sane government could allow for this to stand unanswered and essentially allow for them to go free.
The government could decide to Kent state that bitch (send in the troops and arrest the protestors/leaders) or the government could lose it’s goddamn mind (You decide to play as the institute) and sit in the chair as they are invited into the government (The Institute totally don’t coup the government and use their power in their stead)
Congrats! You have a war to win now in case you spawned any of the other rebellions/triggered the original reason for the country to fall apart enough for the Institute to spawn in the first place.
Don’t forget to gear up and go forth as the beacon of the Japanese across the globe.
