Work Text:

Kimi was tired. He wanted to go back to his hotel room and relax, yet, here he was, standing outside the Haas garage. He did… good, this GP. 5th. Not bad. He was standing out here, in the dark, for no apparent reason at all. He knew Ollie was in there, and he felt a strange flutter in his chest just thinking about the other driver. The lights of the city surrounding twinkled, and he walked off.

He felt numb. If he was asked, he’d say it was race nerves. But he knew it wasn’t. Lying to himself felt… safe. Hide himself away, and everything would be fine. Only if Ollie knew what he was planning to do if he got in that garage…

He woke up the next morning, rolling over to his side to silence the annoying, and very loud hotel alarm clock. Hitting the button with a bit too much force, the blaring noise stopped. He sat up, feeling around for his phone in his bed. Finding it, and seeing a text notification on the front screen…

Ollie ♥️

Kimi?  21:09

Kimi, I thought we were going to hang out after I finished up in the garage. Where’d you go? 21:12

I’m worried, Kimi. Call me when you see this. 00:08

He had fucked up. Again. He sighed, groaning under his breath. “Oh, Dio…” He quickly swiped up, replying.

He felt his phone buzz, Ollie replying instantly. Either he just so happened to be on his phone, or he was waiting for Kimi to reply. His heart skipped a beat at the thought of the second one, but he didn’t want to delude himself. He hoped it was the former answer.

A smile found Kimi’s face, not a toothy one, but a small smile. Ollie wanted to know what he was doing, presumably to hang out. He waited a minute or two to reply, not wanting to seem like he was, God forbid, desperate or clingy.

Kimi threw his phone back onto the bed, laying on his back and staring up at the ceiling for a second before getting out of bed. He walked to the bathroom, brushing his teeth, doing his hair, and everything else. He was pretty excited to have breakfast with Ollie. They did it every race weekend, but it never felt any less special. Looking across the table, looking into those sweet brown eyes… leaning in for a kiss-. Okay. That was enough. He really needed to stop dreaming about Ollie. He looked in his suitcase, pulling out the first thing on the folded pile of shirts. A Mercedes team polo. Great. And some cargo shorts. He picked up his phone again, checking his messages.

Kimi didn’t really know any good places in Singapore, nor did he have any friends that would. Maybe Charles knew? He always knew good places that were private in every GP place, for reasons Kimi didn’t know.

He decided against it. Charles was already questioning him on why he looked at Ollie like that, and he didn’t need to tell Charles he was looking for a private place to take him to breakfast. Suddenly, he was jolted out of his thoughts by a knock on the door. Probably Ollie. Kimi didn’t even move. “Come in!”

Ollie walked in, closing the door behind him. He looked stunning, as always. At least, in Kimi’s mind he did. Most people wouldn’t think he did, just wearing trousers and a T-shirt, but, God, Kimi did.

“Hey.” Ollie said simply, putting his hands in his pockets, in a desperate attempt to not look awkward, or weird. He always thought he did. Kimi looked so… confident. Why couldn’t he be like that? He was a F1 driver, for God’s sakes, yet he still felt like a child, in a place he didn’t belong.

—

“Sure, yeah, we can go now. Do you have any ideas for where we could go? I don’t want to be hounded, maybe somewhere private.” Kimi said, immediately regretting his words. God. He always managed to sound weird! Why would he say that, why would he say private. That implied he was trying to make a move on Ollie. He felt dumb, but hoped his face didn’t show it.

Thankfully, Ollie didn’t seem to notice. “Why don’t we just go to Starbucks?”

“Well, I was hoping for a sit-down breakfast, but that works as well, mate.” Kimi replied casually, before slapping himself in his head. ‘Mate’? He didn’t want to go to Starbucks, but Ollie did. So they would.

Ollie smiled happily, the cute smile Kimi’s eyes lit up at, always. “Alright!”

Kimi grabbed his wallet and phone.

They got their Starbucks, and were sitting in Ollie’s car. Kimi let him drive, of course he did. Despite being a F1 driver, he hated driving on public roads. There were so many idiots!

They drank their coffees in silence, Kimi getting a normal coffee and Ollie getting some kind of ridiculous, expensive thing with whipped cream and stuff.

It was nice, sitting there in the silent car. Of course, Kimi had to go ruin it with his big mouth. Of course he did. He kicked himself as soon as his mouth opened. “So, um, good race, right?”

Ollie didn’t seem bothered, which relieved Kimi a little bit, but not much. He knew he’d replay this moment over and over again before bed, wincing each time. “Yeah, I got 9th, not bad.”

—

Ollie drove back to the hotel. They pulled up out the front. “I have an appointment with my trainer. Maybe we can hang out after media?”

Kimi tried to not seem upset, hoping it wasn’t written all over his face like most emotions he had. He was really hoping to spend some more time with Ollie. “Yeah, after media.” He said, his voice soft as he opened the car door. “That was fun. I’ll see you, Ollie.” He got out of the car, closing it and watching as Ollie drove off. He still had some coffee left, and sloshed it around in the cup, feeling sorry for himself. He sighed, walking back to his hotel room.

Back in his room, he opened his phone, his hands lingering over the keyboard for a few seconds.
