Work Text:

Chuuya was scrolling through his phone on the bed as his husband walked out of the bathroom, hair damp and fresh bandages put on, indicating he just took a shower. As soon as Chuuya saw him, he turned his phone off and set it on the nightstand, sitting up in bed and smiling in greeting towards his husband. “Hey,” he said with a warm smile, shifting over so Dazai could climb in next to him. His partner immediately brightened up with a wide grin, glad to see his husband back at home.

Chuuya usually comes back late in the night due to his job at the Port Mafia, and while Dazai always stays up to wait for him, occasionally Chuuya catches him in a middle of some task like showering or brushing his teeth. It isn’t uncommon, yet every time, Chuuya always loves seeing Dazai’s face light up whenever he walks out of the bathroom and sees that Chuuya’s back.

“Hey,” Dazai repeated, giving Chuuya a small kiss as he climbed into bed next to him, smiling as he did so. Chuuya huffed in amusement before they pulled away, watching as Dazai made himself comfortable under the sheets before he leaned back against the headboard, gazing at Chuuya in adoration. “How was work?”

Before Chuuya answered, he took notice on how the warm light from the bedside lamp illuminated Dazai’s features, highlighting their sharpness and bringing focus to his eyes, a dark brown that were a contrast to brightness around them. Yet even then, they blended in with the scene overall, for the fact that Dazai’s eyes had this warmth to them—they weren’t just cold voids as he stared at Chuuya. The corners of Chuuya’s lips quirked up at the sight, and he answered in an appreciative manner, always treasuring how Dazai asks this question every night; it’s sweet.

“Nothing out of the ordinary,” Chuuya stated, moving over into Dazai’s space to rest his head against his shoulder, leaning on his chest. He closed his eyes, letting himself relax in Dazai’s hold as he asked: “You?”

“Atsushi had to chase a cart rolling down a hill. It was pretty funny, actually.”

Chuuya snorted, no matter how dumb that was. And besides, knowing his husband, Dazai probably sent the cart rolling in the first place, purely just for his amusement. He wouldn’t be surprised anyway. Poor Atsushi, honestly . . .

“You need to stop tormenting your coworkers,” Chuuya remarked, his eyes still closed. He chastises Dazai on this concept practically every day, every time the brunet tells him a story on how he tortured Kunikida or messed with his mentee. And every time, it falls on deaf ears, but at this point, it’s more of like a small joke between them than anything else, really. Dazai would tell Chuuya of a new way he messed with his coworkers, then Chuuya would scold him for it while holding back a laugh in amusement—because he needs to act like he doesn’t condone his behavior—then Dazai would promise not to do again, yet both of them know that he’s lying.

“If Chuuya says so,” Dazai settles on this time, pulling Chuuya closer to him. Chuuya let him, since it allowed him to snuggle closer to the taller man. He signed contently, basking in Dazai’s warmth as he heard him continue talking. “Y’know, other than that, we saw some weird stuff today when we out.”

“Oh yeah?” Chuuya replied, shifting a bit so he was more comfortable. “Ability-wise or . . .?”

“No,” Dazai supplied as Chuuya trailed off from his sentence. He paused for a moment before speaking up again. “Just . . . Generally weird—”

Chuuya interrupted Dazai with a remark of his own, finally opening his eyes and turning around in his hold to look at him with a smug smirk. “How ironic, coming from you,” he said, laughing at the way Dazai’s jaw dropped slightly in exaggerated shock, before it quickly turned into a pout, turning his head away from Chuuya, yet still holding him close—a sign that he was just messing with him.

“How hurtful, Chibi,” Dazai whined, exaggerating a frowned expression. “Chuuya’s so mean!”

Chuuya smirked, and honestly it was because he couldn’t help himself. He chuckled at Dazai’s reaction, snuggling closer and closing his eyes once again, as Dazai rambled on about how “Chuuya is so mean” and whatnot.

“I’m just telling the truth, Dazai,” Chuuya lazily muttered, feeling the tiredness of the day starting to eat at him now. And he would go to sleep, if not for Dazai seemingly being wide awake. Because he just loves nights like these, nights where he and Dazai just talk. It could be about work, their day, the people they knew . . . Practically anything, and Chuuya will still listen. He just loves talking to Dazai, and even moreso, listening to him. It could be about the strangest or most random things he’s talking about, yet Chuuya will still give him his full attention all the way through. And that’s exactly why Chuuya feels bad now for feeling like he’s going to doze off. He wants to stay awake for Dazai and just cherish this moment.

It’s clear Dazai could tell he was drifting off due to the silence at Chuuya’s remark, and knowing his husband, Dazai was probably looking down at the redhead with a soft smile, not wanting to jostle him awake. Yet, again, Chuuya still wanted to hear Dazai. He liked listening to his voice, especially at night when it was laced with some signs of tiredness and was softer than any other time during the day. “Keep talking Dazai,” Chuuya mumbled, just loud enough for the two of them to hear. “I’m listening,” he reassured, yet even he knew that it didn't sound that convincing. Especially considering the fact that Chuuya was basically using Dazai as a human pillow right now, it surely didn’t help his case. Although even then, Dazai still complied, after a chuckle and small, repeating another “If Chuuya says so,” before gently jumping back into his story. His voice was soft and quiet, something that was honestly perfect for the late night.

“Well for one, I didn’t even do anything, yet as we passed by a dog, it started barking at me,” Dazai reminisced, and Chuuya can practically hear the pout in his voice, causing him to chuckle tiredly in response. “I’m serious!” Dazai insisted right after, clearly hiding a small laugh of his own. “Those things have it out for me, I swear.”

Chuuya, riddled with sleep, chuckled at Dazai again. He knows how much his husband hated dogs, despite Chuuya loving them. He was able to recall the time where he once dog-sat for Tachihara when he got a new puppy—back when Dazai and Chuuya were still just dating—and all that week, Dazai just kept staring daggers at the dog, only agreeing to visit that week due to Chuuya’s convincing. But if anything, it’s more like he’s out to get dogs, and Chuuya wants to say as such, but he isn’t sure that it comes out exactly as he had hoped.

“I think . . . You have it the other way around . . . ’Samu . . .” Chuuya ended up slurring, his brain finally drifting off out of consciousness and succumbing to the warm embrace of sleep.

“What, Chibi?” Were the last words Chuuya heard out of Dazai’s mouth, punctuated with a chuckle. He went quiet for a moment—apparently sensing that Chuuya fell asleep—before he felt Dazai place a small kiss to his head and heard the click of their bedside lamp shutting off, surrounding the two in darkness. “Goodnight Chuuya, I love you,” he whispered to him in the dark, and Chuuya’s already half-asleep self responded to the words with a small smile and the action of cuddling closer towards his husband, whispering out a very faint “I love you too,” back to him.
