Work Text:
Susato hummed in thought as she folded in some scoops of sugar into the icing, starting to mix the icing.
It was Kazuma’s birthday tomorrow, and Ryuunosuke had started party preparations for his upcoming party. Even before he and Kazuma had gotten together, he was the one who made preparations for his birthday parties, ever since they met. Ryuunosuke was ever the planner—he was the student president of the English department, after all—so he was able to plan everything with ease. Susato had volunteered to bake the cake for Kazuma, and Rei had quickly spoken up that she wanted to help.
Before she knew it, she was baking a strawberry pound cake in her apartment with her girlfriend Rei.
Susato visited Rei’s apartment, where everything they needed was laid out on the kitchen island, and the two began to bake. Strawberry pound cakes were always Kazuma’s favorite, though that man loved strawberry anything in general. The two had scoured the internet for strawberry pound cake recipes, finally finding one that looked both easy and delicious.
It was a lot of fun, baking with Rei. They cut the strawberries, folded in the wet ingredients with the dry, followed the recipe to a tee. Rei looked so beautiful, bathed in the gentle afternoon sunlight that filtered through the kitchen windows. A thoughtful expression on her face, the mint green apron with floral pink designs that she wore, her hair done up in a bun. Susato had to remind herself to stop staring and continue baking a few times.
Right now the cake was cooling on the wire cooling rack. Susato stopped mixing the icing when she saw there weren’t any streaks of icing sugar anymore.
Rei looked at the white icing, humming in thought. “Do you think it’s sweet enough?”
“I’m unsure. I added about another cup of icing.” Susato replied.
“Why don’t you taste it?”
“What? I can’t do that! It’s unsanitary!”
Rei raised a brow at her. “Susato, bakers taste their food all of the time. Just take a clean spoon and don’t use it again until you’ve washed it.”
“…Oh.” Susato sheepishly smiled. “Um, I don’t bake much.”
“But you cook?” Rei asked, adding when Susato nodded. “It’s the same concept, then! People have to eat the food we make, after all!”
Susato laughed. “That’s fair, Rei!” She then hummed in thought. “We must get a spoon to taste this.”
“Yes, we must.” Rei said, then adding. “And um…you’ve got something on your face, Susato.”
“Really? I do? Wait-”
Susato’s eyes widened as Rei leaned in, capturing her lips in a kiss. Her kiss was as gentle as strawberries, sweet as sugary icing, loving as the wisteria flowers that fluttered in the air during spring. As the two separated from the kiss, Susato saw Rei’s face, as pink as a cherry blossom’s petals, she was sure she was just as red.
“The icing can be a little sweeter, Susato.” Rei said, smiling.
Susato giggled. “You could’ve said that instead of kissing me, Rei.”
“Well…I wouldn’t be able to kiss the most gallant and dashing girl I know, now would I?”
“If I’m the most gallant and dashing girl you know…” Susato smiled. “…Then you’re the most beautiful girl I know.”
Rei blushed at that, going redder than a strawberry. “Susato!”
“You started it.” Susato said with a giggle. She then pressed a gentle kiss on Rei’s cheek. “I love you, Rei.”
“I love you too, Susato.”
Susato smiled.
These tender moments they shared together, gentle as afternoon sunlight…truly, what else could anyone ask for?
