Summary:

Sugawara only wanted a roommate.

He gets a roommate through mutual friends and moves in, problem solved.

So why is said roommate sleeping in his bed with him for the 4th night in a row?

Notes:

Hello hello!

This has been something I’ve been writing for a while now. As in I’ve left this to rot for a few years before I picked it up again. So now I’ve finished writing and lowkey haven’t watched/indulged in haikyuu in a while so uhhh we’ll see how it goes :)))

I do have a few other oisuga fics in the making but not too sure if I should post them as well I just wanted to revisit a ship I really liked.

Work Text:

The light peeked through the curtains as strings of light shone over Sugawara’s closed eyes, twitching in response from the warmth.

He shifted himself slightly before slowly opening his eyes, facing the wall. He groaned and rubbed his eyes, about to turn the other way, feeling a familiar sensation holding him in place. He had an inkling of exactly what it was, confirming it when he saw a pair of arms wrapped tightly around his waist when he pulled the duvet away.

Sugawara internally groaned, knowing this would happen.

Not this again…

The owner of those arms belonged to his new roommate—Oikawa Tooru, who moved in a week ago. He met him through a mutual friend as he was looking for a place to stay since he had nowhere else to go and being the nice person he was, he happily took him in.

He didn’t think too much of it since he was looking for a flatmate for his two-person apartment in the first place and the brunet seemed to be nice enough to live with.

They were the same age and so happened to go to the same college but were both studying in different departments so they would only see each other when they finished classes and were at home.

But there was one thing Oikawa had failed to mention to him beforehand.

His sleeping habits.

It was the fourth time through consecutive nights that Sugawara had found himself in this same position and scenario.

Waking up in the morning where his back is practically pressed against his roommate’s chest with their legs tangled up and arms that held him closely, like he was going to disappear.

He was already beginning to get suspicious by the second night, thinking that the first time it happened was by accident but when he found his roommate in bed once again he was beyond perplexed by the situation.

Snapping him out of his thoughts, a groan came from the very person behind him as he immediately closed his eyes again, pretending to be asleep. He felt the other’s arms slowly loosen around him and the bed slightly dipped, imagining that Oikawa was getting out of bed.

Hearing a yawn escape out of the awoken roommate’s lips, the mattress springs back up and the sounds of the creaking wooden floor, followed by a sound of a click from the door jolts Sugawara out of his bed in panic.

He sat in his bed, completely lost on what he should do, “How often is he going to keep doing this? Does he know what he’s doing?” He questioned himself inwardly, shifting his gaze to his clock.

It was only 8 in the morning, how much was his roommate going to torture him with his sleeping habit?

And it wasn’t like Oikawa was affected by it either, it was like it was a normal routine for him. They would continue to be oblivious that this would happen, Oikawa had never mentioned it once to him nor had he addressed it. And if he was the one to address that would just be awkward.

I can’t let this keep happening.

He grabbed his phone off the bedside table, bringing out a group chat with his closest friend since high school—Sawamura Daichi, along with his boyfriend, Iwaizumi Hajime.

Guys. I need help. ASAPP

Moments later from that message, he received a reply to his message by Daichi.

Daichi: What happened, Suga?

I’ve got flat issues. HELP

Iwaizumi: Did that dumbass do something to you?

Did he?

In a way he hasn’t hurt or harmed him in any way.

Sugawara frustratedly ruffled his hair, “I don’t know! So just meet up with me at the campus cafe!” He exclaimed to his phone, sent as a voice message.

He huffed, slamming his phone down on his bed.

Oikawa Tooru, I swear you better have an explanation for this.

_______________

“Okay, so let me get this straight. You’ve been waking up with Oikawa in your bed since he’s moved in, and he hasn’t said anything about it to you and it’s driving you insane?” Daichi asked, clarifying what Sugawara had told him while he vigorously nodded his head.

“Yes! And I don’t remember if he told me anything about his sleeping problems!” He whipped his head to his best friend’s partner,  who was also Oikawa’s childhood friend and the reason why he even met him in the first place, “Iwaizumi, do you know anything about this?!”

Iwaizumi frowned, his arms crossed and leaned against the back of his seat, “Have you considered bringing up the subject at all to him?”

Sugawara furrowed his brows, his eyes lowering to the table, “Well no… but still. Don’t you think he should at least tell me? He knows, right? I can’t be the only one who knows about this!? Surely you can tell him!”

“I mean, he’s your roommate, Suga. You should be the one to confront him, not us,” Daichi said, being the reasonable person he was, “plus, maybe he’s embarrassed to address it so you’ll probably be doing a favour for him.”

He sighed, rolling his eyes, “I regret asking for your advice but fine~”

“At least you can communicate. Can’t imagine that annoying bastard doing that, he thinks everything’s fine as long as nobody has said anything. I can’t imagine what he’s put you through, Sugawara, you have my respect,” Iwaizumi said to which the other gave him a look.

Sugawara raised a brow, “As if you weren’t the one who recommended him to me.”

Iwaizumi didn’t say anything back, avoiding his stare.

Daichi nervously laughed, deciding to change the subject, “You seem happier now, Suga. I guess Oikawa’s company is nice.”

He flinched by the sudden comment, a faint blush dusting on his cheeks, “H—huh?! What do you mean?!”

Sugawara saw how the other’s smile widened by his reaction. “I'm not wrong, am I?”

“I guess… but still!”

Sugawara refused to let Daichi be right on this one.

Sure, he was more than happy that he had someone to occupy his spacious apartment room with but that didn’t avoid the fact that they’re basically sleeping together in the same bed and are acting like nothing was wrong with that.

To even say that he might have a slight interest in his own roommate was an understatement but he would never admit it, especially not with the knowing expression on his best friend’s face.

It’s not like he likes me anyway.

He felt his chest clench at the thought of instances only occurring because of habit and not anything more, in the end, there wouldn’t be any feelings involved, that’s just the way it was.

Oikawa hadn’t shown the slightest romantic interest in him, why would he be?

Sugawara dismissed the thought, his eyes softening.

What kind of roommates sleep with each other anyway?

_______________

“I’m back!”

Sugawara entered through the front door, closing it behind him and noticed the brunet in the living room, with a bag packed on the couch while he was wearing a pair of grey sweatpants and an oversized hoodie like he was about to leave the flat.

Oikawa turned to see his silver haired roommate taking his shoes off by the entrance, “Suga-chan! You’re back! How was your classes?”

“Oh, it was fine as usual…” he mumbled back, stepping over the threshold—ignoring the fact he had spent most of the day talking to Daichi and Iwaizumi, skipping his two lectures.

He couldn't help but trail his eyes at the outfit Oikawa was wearing.

Even in a hoodie and sweatpants he still looks good?

At this point he was just envious.

The brunet roommate smirked, noticing his blatant staring, “Like what you’re seeing Suga-chan?”

Sugawara coughed, forgetting how long he was staring for, “O—of course not, it’s just different when you’re wearing casual clothes,” he replied, straightening his posture, “besides, whenever I see you you’re wearing is your sleepwear or that absurd set of alien PJs you wear when you’re in the apartment.”

That was embarrassing. Keep it together, Koushi!

Oikawa’s mouth gaped, lightly glaring back at him, “Hey! Don’t judge! They were a gift!” Completely unaware that was meant to distract from teasing Sugawara further about staring.

Good, he’s forgotten about it.

Sugawara smiled in triumph, peeking over the other’s shoulder, noticing the packed bag, “Are you going somewhere?”

Oikawa grinned, “I’m hanging out with some high school friends and spending the night at Iwa-chan’s after! I won’t be back until tomorrow evening since I’ve got lectures and stuff going on. Oh, sorry, I should’ve told you sooner,” he nervously laughed, scratching his cheek.

“No, no! It’s okay! Thank you for telling me, have fun!” He returned the smile while he could feel his heart break a little.

“Thanks, I will! I’ll see you tomorrow, Suga-chan!” he said, wrapping the strap of his bag around his shoulder  before leaving the flat.

The presence of his roommate leaving brought back the familiar sense of loneliness again to the apartment, like how it was before when it was just him. It’s been a while since he felt that way.

Sugawara stretched his arms out—this was a good thing, he won’t have to deal with waking up with Oikawa in his bed. Problem solved…temporarily but at least he knows he’ll have a good sleep.

That’s what he thought anyway.

He got into bed at 11, fully prepared to sleep the entire night peacefully but It was suddenly 1 in the morning and hasn’t gotten a wink of sleep.

“Why can’t I go to sleep!?” He cried, flailing around his duvet, “is there something wrong with me?!”

Was it the coffee when I hung out with Daichi and Iwaizumi?

No, it can’t be, I had that this morning. The caffeine should be gone by now.

Ugh! Why does it have to be when Oikawa’s not around that I can’t go to sleep!?

Sugawara got up from his bed, giving up on trying to fall asleep and walked outside his bedroom into the living room.

If I can’t go to sleep, I’ll just watch something until I do.

He wrapped himself with one of the blankets on the couch and sat down, extending his arm to the coffee table where the remote was and turned on the tv.

Spending about a solid 5 minutes he groaned, “Why aren’t there any good shows on right now? Surely there’s something good that’s on…” he managed to find a channel playing a soap opera he had been watching with his roommate during the evening before bed.

He frowned, it wouldn’t feel right to watch it without him.

He really did miss the company of his roommate.

_______________

I miss Suga-chan.

Oikawa opened his eyes after a tiring war with falling asleep but didn’t succeed in the end.

He had probably gotten 2 hours of sleep out of the 10 he could’ve gotten if he was back at home. Getting up from the couch, he could feel his head pounding, placing a hand over his head, “I should’ve just gone back home after…” he murmured to himself.

“Hey, Shittykawa,” Iwaizumi called out, entering into the living room in his sleepwear, miraculously still awake at this hour, “how was your sleep? Did you get any sleep?”

“Nope, but your couch was comfy,” he replied, folding the blankets that he was using and laying them on one side of the couch, “I’m going back home now. I need more sleep for the rest of the day.”

“Isn’t it kinda late?”

It was only 4am, how in the world was he supposed to go back home at this time? No trains would be in service yet.

“Well, I like my sleep, Iwa-chan. I could say the same thing about you,” the brunet squinted his eyes at him, “why aren’t you asleep?”

“I knew you’d be up—” Iwaizumi was suddenly reminded about the conversation with a particular silver haired friend yesterday, “actually, I need to ask you something.”

Oikawa perked his head up, in the middle of packing up his belongings, “What is it?”

He saw the hesitation in his friend’s expression but didn’t question it, “Did you tell Sugawara that you have a problem with the cold?”

“Nah, Suga-chan doesn’t know but don’t worry, Iwa-chan! I’ve got it all under control!” He winked, making his way to the door, “I’ll see you, Iwa-chan! Tell Sawamura-kun I said thanks for letting me stay over with you guys for the night!”

After he left, Iwaizumi facepalmed straight after, “I swear to god that they’re both so dumb.”

Someone emerged from the hallway, finding themselves in the living room, “Hajime…? Why did you leave the bed?” His boyfriend murmured, rubbing his eyes as he had just awoken with bed hair that had made itself known on his head.

He snorted fondly at the sight, “Sorry, Dai. I just needed to see Oikawa out before he leaves. Let’s go back to bed, it’s still early in the morning.”

“Okay…” He replied back, shuffling to their room with his boyfriend behind him.

_______________

The brunet managed to make it back with an uber ride which might’ve ripped him off because of some ‘early morning fee’ but regardless was at bliss to enter the living room he was familiar with. Oikawa yawned, stopping his track, noticing the tv was still on, quickly realising the reason, seeing a bed of silvery hair poking out from the couch.

He tried to contain his laughter.

I guess Suga-chan had a hard time sleeping as well.

He decided to turn off the tv first, grabbing the blanket that was reaching towards the ground and properly draping it over his asleep roommate.

“I need some sleep too…” He mumbled to himself, crouching down to the silver haired roommate. He gazed at his asleep expression, cherishing every second of it.

He quietly chuckled at the sight, playing around with a strand of his hair that was poking out. His arm resting on the edge of the couch, sitting on the floor, “Even when you’re asleep you're still cute, Suga-chan,” he said, knowing that his roommate wouldn’t hear him.

Oikawa never thought he would see the day where he would melt so quickly for someone he’s spent so little time with. He has come to appreciate the moments he shares with Sugawara, the sweet gestures he does and the teasing comments he gets once and a while that seem a little brutal coming from him.

But one thing he would never get tired of was being with him.

“I’m back, Suga-chan,” he whispered to him softly, deciding this would leave him alone. Pushing himself off the floor he took one last glance as he made his way back to his bedroom.

What Oikawa didn’t realise was that his sleeping roommate was wide awake from being woken up by the sound of the front door when came back. Sugawara snapped his eyes opened in a blushing a mess while his heart was racing the entire time.

Oh my god, I thought I was going to die there.

I didn’t expect him to come home so soon? Didn’t he say he’ll come home in the evening?

Sugawara’s head went back to the soft tone his roommate had spoken to him in and grabbed a fistful of the cover, planting it onto his face. There was no need for his roommate to do that to him. He definitely won’t be sleeping anymore.

Merciless, Oikawa… you are merciless…

From what he could see, it was barely sunrise, he could probably sleep in a few more hours before waking up but of course they had to change because his flatmate had to come back early at home and—

Sugawara inwardly screamed.

Cute?!

Cute? I'm cute? Why, why did he have to say it like that?!

“I knew it, I can’t sleep…” Oikawa cursed, still struggling to fall asleep even in the comfort of his own bed. He even tried to get into a comfortable position, curling himself into a ball to try to preserve the warmth but it wasn’t working for him at all.

He was never a fan of the cold because he could never fall asleep without the warm. It wasn’t even that cold but regardless, his eyes were wide open and he did not feel sleepy at all—considering he was running on 2 hours of sleep.

He furrowed his brows. If only the heater he ordered had arrived faster and wasn’t lost in a different country then he wouldn’t be in this situation in the first place.

So technically he has been using his flatmate as a heater without him knowing and might eventually get him kicked out but it was temporary so it’s fine. He has a winning streak of 4 nights out of 4.

Another toss and turn, he gave up with a huff.

Getting up from his bed, he wrapped a light blanket and devised a plan—that he came up with a moment ago—his target was the very person who was asleep. Moving Sugawara into his bedroom will allow him to sneakily sleep beside him and he’ll make sure to wake up before he does so he won’t be caught.

I’m sorry, Suga-chan.

This will be the last time I swear.

While in the living room, Sugawara was aimlessly staring at the ceiling, waiting for sleep to take over his body but no thanks to Oikawa, his words and voice were running around his mind, keeping him up.

He pulled the blanket over himself, turning facing to the back of the couch and closed his eyes momentarily before opening them when he heard sounds of footsteps.

Huh…?

Is that Oikawa?

He stayed as still as possible, closing his eyes shut as the footsteps approached closer towards him. He didn't hear anything for a second before he was immediately pulled up from his spot. A hand around his back while the another made it around the inner part of his knees, carrying him off the couch

Where am I being taken?!

Sugawara peeked slightly, recognising the format of the hallway, they were walking towards his room?

But why?

His roommate dramatically kicks the door open, making sure not to use too much strength to slam against the wall. Sugawara saw his bed within his vision before being placed down on the bed, placed on his side.

Huh?

He could feel the presence of the brunet over him, before he joined him in the bed. Sugawara didn’t know what to do, being conscious for the first time when Oikawa had done this the other times.

An arm pulled him closer towards him, hooked around his waist making him physically flinch at the touch. His eyes snapped open, meeting eyes with his brown eyes, “O—Oikawa…?!” he stuttered which also startled the brunet, who fell backwards off the bed, creating a loud thud.

Sugawara worriedly looked over the edge of the bed  to his roommate who was on the floor, rubbing his head in pain, “Are you okay?!”

“Yeah. I’m fine… all good.”

He frowned, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“No, no it’s not your fault! It’s my fault for… doing all that,” Oikawa replied, his expression filled with guilt.

He wondered if it would be a good time to discuss their dilemma now, given the awkward silence between them and because he caught Oikawa in the act, “Do… Do you want to talk about it?”

Oikawa’s eyes slowly met his, nodding his head.

_______________

“Here, a hot chocolate,” Sugawara handed him a cup before taking a seat beside the brunet, relocating themselves in the living room instead of his room, “how’s your head now?”

“It’s okay now. Thank you, Suga-chan,” Oikawa gave him a small smile before it dropped, his hand nervously playing around with the handle of the cup, “I think I owe you an explanation from all the trouble I’ve caused you for the past days.”

The silver haired roommate placed his cup on the table, “I’m not mad, I want to hear you out, Oikawa,” he assured him, placing a hand on his shoulder.

He really was too good for him.

With a heavy breath, Oikawa began, “Since I was little, I’ve always hated the cold and I’ve always struggled to fall asleep with it, which means I always need to have a heater on or something to keep me warm. As you can see I don’t have a heater but don’t worry! I’ve already ordered a heater but it’s taking a while to get here and so…” he flickered his gaze to the other, who still had the kindest look on his face, “I’ve been sleeping with you for the past few nights because of the stupid weather. I swear I haven’t done anything weird—well maybe aside from hugging you without your consent but the intention wasn’t to be creepy! Please don’t kick me out!”

He waited for a response, from the look on his flatmate's face. He was probably shocked and disgusted by his behaviour, he could understand his wishes and got up, “I understand if you want me to leave, I’ll grab my things and—” a hand reached out and grabbed on his wrist, stopping him, “Suga-chan…?”

“I—um…” he finally spoke, his face bright red, “I didn’t say you had to leave…”

Oikawa blinked a few times, sitting back down on his spot, “Eh?”

He took a few seconds before continuing, “I knew a while ago actually…” he admitted to which completely shocked the other.

“You did?!” he exclaimed, here he was thinking Sugawara had no clue of his wrongdoings.

Sugawara averted his gaze, slightly shy, “I… I didn’t hate it either. Otherwise I would’ve said something sooner…” he quietly said but was loud enough for the other to hear.

Oikawa let the clogs in his head turn a few times, processing the words in his head, “Oh.”

Sugawara lightly chuckled, “That makes me weird too, huh?”

“N—no! You can never be weird to me, Suga-chan!” he quickly interjected, cupping both his hands in his, “I’m sorry for subjecting you into that but uh—” he felt his cheeks going warm as well, staring at their hands, “god, this is weird.”

He giggled, sending butterflies in his stomach, “I guess we’re both just as weird.”

“I guess we are,” Oikawa laughed, bringing Sugawara’s hands onto his cheeks as he fondly smiled at him, even his hands were just as warm as his smile, “then if you don’t mind, can I keep sleeping with you tonight?”

That must’ve been the last bullet to take out his roommate who immediately fainted, “S—Suga-chan?! Suga-chan! Wake up! Don’t leave me like this!” He cried, pulling him up but he was completely knocked out and bright red.

He realised the second meaning in what he said might’ve sounded like, his entirely turning red, “W—wait! That’s not what I meant!”

_______________

“You two never cease to amaze me,” Iwaizumi said, staring at the two nervous looks from both Oikawa and Sugawara, who sat opposite him and his boyfriend.

Daichi laughed, patting his boyfriend’s shoulder, “Give them a break, Hajime. They at least communicated to each other, now everything has been sorted out, right?”

“I can’t believe you lied to me, Iwaizumi!” Sugawara ignored his best friend and went straight to his boyfriend, glaring at him. He was betrayed to hear that he was already aware about his roommate’s issue with the cold.

Iwaizumi immediately shut down the accusation, putting his hand out, “No, I didn’t know that bastard would go into your room in the middle of the night and cuddle with his roommate out of all people,” he clarified, staring at his childhood friend who said nothing.

Oikawa coughed, turning his head away.

“Well, at least everything’s been resolved! Did your heater arrive, Oikawa?” Daichi asked, to which he nervously laughed back.

“O—Oh… yeah it did!”

“That’s good,” he replied, his elbow resting on the table while he put his cheek against his palm, “at least you won’t need to keep going into Suga’s room now. Things can go back to normal for you guys.”

“Yeah! That’s great…!” Sugawara nervously laughed, his eyes shifting towards the person sitting beside him, like he was urging him to contribute to the conversation.

Oikawa nodded his head, “Mhm! I get to have the heater all to myself! It’s great!”

Daichi stared at them confusedly, did he say something funny? As he was about to say something, Iwaizumi butted in, “You two are acting strange, is there something else you aren’t telling us?” He asked, raising a brow at them.

“Nope! Not at all! We would never do such a thing, Iwa-chan!” Oikawa exclaimed, almost frantically, “isn’t that right, Suga-chan?”

“Yup! We’ve told you everything that you need to know!” Sugawara said, sweat dripping the side of his cheek.

The other stared at them suspiciously while Daichi questioned their strange behaviour but rather not touch on the topic, “If you say so…”

Daichi lit up, clapping his hands together, “I just remembered! Hajime and I were talking and…” as he continued to ramble, the two roommates were in their own little world together as their shoulders brushed against each other.

Unbeknownst to the couple, under the table was Sugawara’s hand intertwined with Oikawa’s, holding each other’s hand tightly.

The brunet looked over to Sugawara who smiled at him, giving him a quick wink while he reciprocated with a smile and gave their hands a light squeeze.

Who knew starting our relationship would start like this.

_______________

“Bedtime~! It’s bedtime, Kou-chan!” Oikawa sang, skipping into his room, making his presence fully known in Sugawara's bedroom.

The owner of the bedroom lifted his head up from his phone, comfortably laying on his bed, raised a brow at him, “Huh? Already? It’s only 12am?” he questioned back.

Oikawa found his space on the bed right next to him and gave him a frown, “Kou-chan, you’re not staying up until 3am tonight again.”

“You’re not my mum.”

“I'm not but I am your boyfriend, Sugawara Koushi. Come here!” The brunet suddenly attacks the other, wrapping his arms around his waist, flailing him around.

He laughed, struggling to get out his grasp,  “H—hey! Let me go!”

Oikawa propped his chin on his shoulder, his breath tickling his neck, “Never,” he said into his ear, receiving a smack in the head by Sugawara, “ow! What was that for, Kou-chan?!”

He let him go while Sugawara was let free, he placed his phone on his bedside table with a grin, “Serves you right.”

“Remind me again why I share an apartment with you?”

“I’m not the one who tells you to make bad decisions, Tooru,” he replied, poking his tongue out at him, “and hey, you’re the one who decided to sleep with me in the first place. Also, no take backs, we're officially bound for life now. You've accepted this fate.”

Oikawa rolled his eyes, “Alright, alright, it’s my fault. Let's go to bed now,” he said, turning off the lights, taking the other’s phone away from his grasp and placing it on the bedside table while his arms found themselves back where they belong.

On Sugawara.

He rubbed his cheeks on the back of Sugawara's, who was unfazed by his actions, growing tolerant of it. Sugawara pouted his lips, “Hey, I thought you said you only need to sleep with me when it’s cold.”

“I never said I didn’t sleep like this when it was hot either.”

Sugawara fell silent, knowing the smug look on his boyfriend's face right now. He sighed defeatedly, “I doubt on cold days you’ll be using the heater either. Good thing the living room needs one anyway.”

Oikawa grinned, “Yeah! See, it was worth it in the end!”

“Whatever, goodnight, Tooru.”

The silver haired roommate pressed his back against the other’s chest, closing their already close proximity while the brunet pecked his cheek, “Goodnight, Kou-chan.”

The heater that had taken 2 weeks to arrive was supposed to be for his room, had ended up sitting in the living room instead as Oikawa has barely used his own room for a while now since he's started sharing a room with his boyfriend, only seeking warmth wherever there is Sugawara.
