His Smile Was My Answer

Summary:

My take on the last few minutes of Limbo - Barbara's POV

Notes:

Property of Elizabeth George and the BBC, no copyright infringement intended.

Another plot hole in this episode is how Superintendent Tate and her cavalry managed to appear on Hungerford Bridge only a couple of minutes after Tommy had thrown Barbara his phone and told her to call for back-up... but we'll let them off that one too!

Work Text:

When I saw Tommy on Hungerford Bridge, his hands around Conrad’s throat, bending him back over the railing, his expression one of blind fury, my first thought was ‘oh god not again.’

The memory of him trying to throw Professor Blackwell over a balcony, and the fallout that almost ended our partnership, flashed through my mind. Superintendent Tate’s expression told me she wasn’t impressed with Tommy either. Whatever her problem with him was, it could wait; right now I had to focus on damage control.

“Sir… Sir.”

Luckily, though breathless from running, my voice broke through his berserker rage.

“Keys.”

He located them in Conrad’s pocket and unlocked the handcuffs from around my wrists. Once free, I secured Conrad’s hands behind his back and passed him over to one of the uniformed officers who were accompanying Tate.

As they led him away, Tommy checked on me.

“Alright?”

I nodded, and we both turned to head back to where he’d abandoned the Bristol.

As we walked, I turned and looked up at him.

“Welcome back you.”

He briefly hugged me, “thanks.”

“I probably shouldn’t say this, but do you fancy a drink?”

His smile was my answer.
