you don't have to be okay

Summary:

A fic about grieving the loss of a parent.

Notes:

In which I project sadness onto Dan and Phil whilst dealing with my own grief.

Work Text:

Phil knew when he woke up that morning that he was going to have to give Dan a little space, instantly knowing what day it was without even having a second thought. It’s hard to forget what day it was, remembering how destroyed Dan had been a year ago when they found out the news.

Phil looks over and sighs softly when he sees Dan sleeping peacefully beside him on their bed. He gently leans over and places a kiss on Dan’s forehead before shoving the blankets off himself, and making his way out of their bedroom. He walks straight to the kitchen.

Phil stands there for a moment in the middle of the kitchen, deciding what he wants to do. He already knows Dan wouldn’t want him to make a big deal over this day. It’s not something he likes to talk about, or even think about, generally. But, Phil would rather try and cheer Dan up, than leave him alone and allow him to be depressed.

Phil decides that he’s going simple. He makes pancakes, sausage and biscuits.

It’s about ten minutes into making breakfast when he hears soft footsteps. He looks over just as Dan is walking into the kitchen. He’s surprised Dan is even up so early. He thought Dan would want to sleep in.

“Morning,” Phil says, and goes back to paying attention to the food he’s cooking.

“What are you doing?” Dan asks, rubbing his eyes tiredly.

“Making breakfast. Hungry?” Phil asks, and glances back over at Dan.

“A little. Why are you up so early?” Dan asks tiredly, walking closer to Phil.

“I dunno,” Phil answers honestly. “I woke up and wasn’t tired enough to go back to sleep.”

“You never want to make breakfast,” Dan says.

Phil can’t help but laugh. “No, but I thought it’d be nice. I’m making pancakes. Is that okay?”

Dan squints slightly. “Pancakes would be nice,”

“Good,” Phil says, and he leans over to kiss Dan once on the lips.

“You don’t have to do this, you know?” Dan asks.

“Do what?” Phil asks.

“I just mean… this. I’m not… like, going to break down or anything,” Dan says.

Phil sighs softly. “Dan, I just want to make breakfast. There’s no special reason,” he says.

“I just…” Dan begins. “I just want this to be like any other day. I don’t even really want to think about it.”

“That’s fine, Dan. We can treat it like another day,” Phil says calmly. “Why don’t we eat breakfast, and then we’ll go from there. Okay?” He looks over at Dan.

Dan stares at him for a moment, before slowly nodding. “Okay,”

“Okay,” Phil nods.

“I think I’m going to go shower,” Dan says.

“Alright, babe. Go ahead. I’ll shout for you when breakfast is ready,” Phil says. He looks up, and watches as Dan turns, and makes his way out of the kitchen. Phil can’t help the frown on his face. He just wishes that there was something more he could do for his boyfriend. He hates seeing him so upset, even when Dan says he’s fine, Phil knows he’s hurting on the inside. Dan lost his father. It’s not easy to deal with, even a year later. Dan’s doing the best he can, and Phil’s proud of everything he’s done.

When Dan walks into the bathroom with a clean pair of clothes in his hands a few moments later, he sets them down on the counter. He looks up at the mirror and takes a deep breath as he stares at his reflection. “You’re not going to cry. You can get through the day-” Dan tells himself, before cursing out loud to himself. Easier said than done. Dan secretly has allowed himself to cry over the past few days leading up to the one year anniversary of his father’s day, even though he knows that Phil wouldn’t judge him if he cried in front of him. Phil’s been really great actually in that aspect, giving Dan space or allowing Dan to come to him for comfort on his rough days.

Dan, unfortunately, doesn’t really feel much better after his shower like he thought he would. But, when he gets downstairs, a plate of delicious food is waiting for him, along with his boyfriend.

“How was your shower?” Phil asks when Dan walks into the living room.

“Fine,” Dan replies, and he makes his way towards Phil, and flops on the couch beside him. He doesn’t even really care about breakfast right now. He just wants his boyfriend’s comfort.

“You okay?” Phil asks, gently placing an arm around Dan.

“I don’t think I’ll ever be okay,” Dan mumbles.

“That’s okay too, you know?” Phil whispers. “We’ll get through it. You are not ever going to be alone.”

“I know,” Dan says, and he looks over at Phil. “I love you.”

“I love you too,” Phil says, and he kisses Dan. “Do you want to eat?”

“I could eat,” Dan says, and pushes himself up. This is all he needs, really. Comfort food, and Phil.
